Keep in mind, Fragile Heart is useful late game as well, if you're trying to get Shell Binding pantheons done, you go from four masks to SIX. 1.5x HEALTH BABY

Tip for starters: Fragile Strength + Greed is REALLY useful for grinding in early-mid game where you're garunteed not to die during grinding. If you might die I suggest to replace strength with heart

You can grind the 5 flying weirdos in the failed tramway, with fragile greed, dreamgate, (that charm that collects geo for you) and fragile strength you can get it quite fast, all you have to do is to put your dreamgate near the bench, and then go left, kill all the bugs the flying weirdos spit out and then them, after that dreamgate and repeat. That's how I grinded out the unbreakable charms

Watching my friend play Hollow Knight for the first time ever (him going in mostly blind, as I was vaguely guiding him around without spoilers), and seeing him prance through Path of Pain in a QUARTER of the time it took me, all because he thought Sharp Shadow would be a fun addition to the parkour.... really opened my eyes on Sharp Shadow's versatility. I usually just use it for dealing some chip damage to bosses as I am evading their attacks, but seeing him use it as a mobility option was quite impressive. Yeah it lets you chip some health as you dodge through the foes, but is also increases the range of the dash, and that's not something I really registered. If anything I originally thought it was more of a hinderance (as I now had to get used to my new dash range). For my own sake, Grubsong. Never leave home without it, especially if you are accident prone. Or even something as simple as Gathering Swarm are very very useful. Swarm is amazing when yer just starting out, as it helps you make sure you get all the money you can and none of it is falling into acid or spikes where you can't grab it. And of course, Grubsong is just... Grubsong. Incredibly useful mid-fight. Pair with Weaversong for pseudo-Kingsoul during a tough boss, or even alone if it is just a fight you know you take a lot of damage in.

I equipped sharp shadow almost as soon as I could and now when I take it off it feels off because I’m not used to my shade being so short and blocky. It’s just so odd for me now that I have to take it off to fight certain pantheon bosses because I’d like to have, say, weaversong on because I’d like to play a little more passively. Honestly, I used sharp shadow for the Markoth fight, and watching people complain about how shitty the platforms were was really weird, because just with Sharp shadow, I barely had any trouble with falling into the void without me actually making some dumb mistake. Although, sometimes it really can be a hinderance. I unequipped it for the absrad fight because plat forming became difficult with it and i wasn’t really gonna do damage with it.. given that you barely ever have to dash through the radiance. Sharp Shadow really is a win or lose situation for me, because sometimes it can absolutely make problems disappear (like if an enemy has too big of a hitbox to shade dash through, slap on sharp shadow and boom problem solved) but it can also grant you no real advantage or can make it disadvantageous at some points. I do think Sharp Shadow is a bit undervalued, because I see a lot of people just shitting on this charm. which is just like :[[[

Something I noticed: When combined with Soul Twister, Soul _Catcher_ actually reduces the nail hits required to cast another spell from 3 Hits to 2. So _I guess_ it does have some use, but only when combined with Spell Twister (which is obviously better)

This combination increases your soul income by 33/24 * 14/11 = +75%. Its a bit more than Soul Eater gives (19/11 = +73%) for the same 4 slots, but Soul Eater gives you health boost as well. So this combination is viable, but only before you unlock the Dream Nail.

My go to charm build for most bosses is just all 4 spell charms. Soul Catcher, Soul Eater, Shaman Stone, and Spell Twister. I believe that if you get 3 nail hits, it allows you to cast 2 very high damage spells. Seems kinda busted to me. No need to heal when your damage output is higher than a m134 minigun with explosive rounds.

As someone whose brain is on par with Internet Explorer, grubsong is invaluable. I accidentally go running headfirst into enemies and throw myself off of cliffs within three minutes of starting the game. Grubsong, quick slash, and quick focus are currently my go-to build.

I always combine grubsong with thorns of agony, cause then if I run into an enemy during the periods where my brain shuts off for a few seconds, I get a bit of soul to potentially use for healing, and there's the chance that the thorns will eliminate the enemy that I stupidly ran into.

3:09 This is impossible without collecting claw, but not without "going past that spot" *deep breath* shade skip to salubra to buy longnail and equip it, die again to shade skip to blue lake. Get dream nail, descend into the waterways elevator using either a shade skip or a husk pogo on the way. Then procceed through waterways getting traumatised by hwurmps until you reach the room with cornifer (yes, this is possible). Then perform a shade skip to reach the lever and emerge into fungal wastes from the bottom. Head to claw either via shade skip or itemless epogo. Now that you have claw, you can head back into waterways and defeat dung defender normally, without ever even entering that large vertical room near leg eater. The fight will be with nail 0-1 and no spells, but if you got this far is that really a problem for you? Thank you for coming to my TED talk

A charm that I use which I see not that many other use is sharp shadow. It is a solid charm cause you get to damage things by dashing through them (doesn't include strength) and you get additional distance on your dash. This charm is very useful for bosses cause you often dash through them anyway and with the added distance you won't get hit

It's only a buff to your regular shade cloak, and that's why it's so good, it's turning your best escaping tool into an attack (and only one, yes, but one you can use to start start chain of many more).

Personally speaking, my favourite charm, nd one I keep in my build at ALL times, is Carefree Melody. Not only is it just super good as an effect to have while exploring, fighting log battles, and fighting bosses, but it can actually save you from losing if you get hit during a boss fight on Radiant. It is 100% the reason I beat Pure Vessel on Radiant for the first time. Sure, the chance is low when you haven't been hit much, but each time you get hit the chance gets higher, up to a certain percentage. Pretty sure it starts at 10%, then goes up by 10% every time you get hit, until it reaches 90%, then you have a 90% chance to avoid the damage. When the effect happens, and you avoid the damage, it resets. Truly an overpowered charm to have, that has saved me NUMEROUS times. Infinitely better than Grimmchild, too

The power of steady body it amazing, as it is available from the beginning of the game if you are good or when you get dash, costing one notch, and making you take no knock back form your nail, make it a huge help. Parts where it really shines are when the boss you’re fighting moves a lot, like Grimm, mantis lords, or bosses that take large kb, like broken vessel or hornet, and before you go crying about hornet being required to get it, there are such things as shade skips, and getting it isn’t hard, just beat gruz mother, kill yourself (in game), go back, and do the simple shade skip that even a new player can understand it

First off, loved this video. You have a compelling way of explaining complex/controversial takes. Now then, I think Steady Body is underutilized for how versatile it is. At 1 notch, it's relatively easy to spec around it. The real advantage is the mental bandwidth it saves for having to constantly reposition yourself, which allows you to focus better on timing, hit-count, soul gauge, spells, etc. The more things you have to worry about, the less you're able to perform in all of them. This might manifest itself in very subtle ways like missing an attack here, falling off a platform there, but most people will just chalk those blunders up to happenstance.

This also stacks really well with Dream Wielder. I'm personally partial to adding Grubsong, Thorns of Agony, and Spore Shroom to add damage output while using these to stay alive, but will toy around with other builds when I come up against bosses that don't offer a lot of opportunity to use these. (Typically also will add Mark of Pride, or Long Nail/Nailmaster's Glory for basic offensive capabilities.) The first 2 also effectively turn any wave with Shielded Fools in the Colosseum into a checkpoint - by isolating them and killing everything else in the room, you can farm Soul off them until you've both topped that off and fully healed.

I'm actually more of a casual gamer, so I used fragile/unbreakable heart pretty consistently throughout the entire game. It made me feel more comfortable exploring and fighting because I had a larger margin for error. I don't think grubsong is underrated, but it also helped a ton by giving me back soul whenever I messed up (which was frequent!). Together, those two charms helped me recover from fighting or platforming blunders and eased a lot of frustration for me.

definately agree about heart, even in godhome, my go-to set involves heart. quick + deep focus, shape of unn, and heart is actually like really good grubsong is overall good as well, though i honestly always found it more useful for its combos and not its innate ability.

@@jaisenroa4219 Your set sounds like it's really good for staying alive. That's awesome. In my playthrough, I always ended up going with charms that helped me do as much damage as possible. I frequently used fragile/unbreakable strength, heart for health, mark of pride/long nail for reach, and grubsong and wayward compass if I had the space. That was my typical build. I never did learn about the secondary effects of some charm pairings, maybe I'll look into that in a second playthrough.

Shape of unn. Not only is it the funny slug, (which is already reason enough for it to be on top of any charm tier list) but the sheer amount of extra healing opportunities and dodging abilities shout be talked about a lot more than it is. It also pairs very nicely with the other charms that involve healing, but it doesn't need them to be good. Excellent charm in my opinion.

Traitor Lord works the same way without Sharp Shadow and it's also my favorite boss after PV+NKG. Get in his face and mash attack. If he tries to dash, dash through and repeat. The only boss I can see SS actually making a fundamental difference is vs NKG to dash through the flame trail, but you could also just pogo him twice instead. Not to shit on anyone who likes the charm though. I'd imagine it's fun to use if you're used to it but I just can't see anywhere it opens up any actual new strats.

In my opinion, the three best charms are Grubsong, Quick Slash, and Dashmaster, with a close fourth being Carefree Melody and a fifth being Unbreakable Strength. This is because I normally use the nail, and I do so while dashing around a lot, so being able to hit an enemy many times within the span of a short fraction of a second between dashes is really op, and with Grubsong, I barely ever run out of soul to heal with if I ever take damage, which can be avoided in the first place very easily because I have Carefree Melody on, and I deal an insane amount of damage due to Unbreakable Strength. That’s basically the most op nail build I can think of, and since I barely use spells (I know, I should start doing so), those are my go-to charms.

I personnally think nmg is kind of trash. In situation where I use nail arts, the normal charging time of the nail is more than enought. If I have one charm notch left, I'll put either grubsong, dream wielder or sprintmaster, most likely the first.

I'm useless at platformers and even worse at remembering to heal, but miraculously, my focus and determination skyrocket and my playstyle gets more aggressive as the situation gets riskier. Despite being terrible at games, I always somehow pull through with just one point of health. It's no exaggeration to Fury Of The Fallen is my favorite charm and always gives me just that extra little bit of damage needed to win. I think it's really overlooked in favor of less risk encouraging charms. Mark Of Pride is awesome, too, but I really love Fury Of The Fallen.

I think shape of unn is underrated. It allows you to move while healing and shrinks your hit box, you’d be surprised with how much easier NKG is with it on. And combined with quick focus not only do you heal quickly but you move quickly

Honestly you put two of some of my most used charms on that list. Aside from the obvious ones like Strength, Quick Slash, and Shaman Stone and their sheer brokenness, I use Spell Twister a *lot*. It's so useful having that one extra spell in fights, especially boss fights and the Colosseum. Dream Weilder is another I use often, for the reasons you already stated in the video. Honestly really cool to see these much underrated charms getting the spotlight (especially since I play this game a lot and love watching this series for the humor and remembering everything I completely borked on my first playthrough).

Quick Focus is one of THE BEST charms in the game because wherever you are, be it the coliseum or the pantheons, you can heal TWICE AS FAST. It also works incredibly well with soul eater/dreamwielder. In a boss fight that offers basically no healing room? Now you can heal. In a situation where you can off 1 or 2 heals like Sisters of Battle? Now you can get off 3 or 4 heals (being you have the soul)

steady body, staying near an enemy without being knocked back can often get you another hit, and for one charm notch, that's quite good. as well, for bosses that float it can definitely help you stay near and get more nail hits, and once you get used to it you can't really go back (oh yea also half of the people that did p5 hitless used steady body) heavy blow, it staggers enemies more, this is the only good use, so its useful for bosses like lost kin that get staggered easily (9 hits) and decreases that to 8 hits

I believe thorns is a must have, it only takes up one charm notch and does everything it needs to. If your in the a situation with multiple enemies surrounding you, if you have thorns, once your hit they'll be taken out and give you a chance to move or heal. It's perfect

Imo, the dashmaster is a really good charm because it let's you reach ground faster since all you need to do is dash, and at the same time it makes dashing faster, so instead of a strenght build, you do a dodge/ speed build. This nd Quick focus, it's too op to reduce your heal time by half

Mark of pride or long nail can help reaching enemies from farther away sometimes allowing you to hit an enemy without them reaching you. Flying enemies are easier to reach when you don’t have scream.

Steady body is underrated. It allows you to increase your dps a fair bit and when fighting bosses with limited plat forms insures you won't fall off when hitting an enemy and knock your self into hazardous objects like spikes and thorns.

I can definitely say one of my go to charms is lifeblood heart (for the same reason fragile heart is on this list), but one of the other ones I really like is Joni's blessing for the reason that if I'm doing something menial while just goofing off I'll equip it if I know I won't have to heal much (seeing as you can't heal with it equipped). Ok ok hear me out: Unpopular opinion, but sharp shadow is an amazing charm. Its utility is underrated in both path of pain, white palace, and long boss fights. It extends the range of your shade dash, and deals a little damage, and fits in well with pure nail builds. This charm singlehandedly carried me through the NKG, And Lost Kin fights, being ESPECIALLY useful is NKG. But on top of that, its actually great for white palace and path of pain. It lets you skip some of the timing sections, or at least makes them easier, and the only drawback is you have to move backwards a little in some jumps. Its personally in S+ tier for me, alongside Unbreaking strength, Quickslash, and Mark of Pride. (All in my build) I know spells do insane damage, but i personally just dont enjoy playing with them.

Dashmaster is just fun to use, if only for having enough zoomies to dodge and then instantly retaliate. Sharp Shadow isn't much, and the extended dash can be a bit troublesome at times, but those small hits add up against a boss that moves like a freight train (Traitor Lord, God Tamer, Nosk), or bosses that attack you with a simple swing when you're up close or do a dash (Watcher Knights, the Nail Masters, Broken Vessel/Lost Kin)

I like to make loadouts geared towards the adventure aspect of HK. 2 Compass & Gathering Swarm (convenience) 3 Grub Elegy (my reasons on this one are beyond the comprehension of morons...which means I don't know either) 1 Spore Shroom (for that weird mushroom guy) 1 Nailmaster (cause Sly) 1 DreamWielder (DN is too cumbersome otherwise) 2 Grimmchild (cause Vampire Pain-sugar Daddy) 0 Void Heart (would keep it on even if it could be removed) Total Cost 10 means I can always throw caution to the wind and overcharm. Though most of the time I slap Dung Crest for memes.
