I decided to try out the Low% speedrun in Hollow Knight and here is how my first run went. This category is pretty cursed.

Alright, go under Resting Grounds and just go left until you reach it. After you swim/jump dash/or crystal heart across you'll fall on Sulubra's shop trough a passageway that works both ways. You can get to it from the bench at Sulubra's and then dying so you can pogo on your shade and enter the blue lake without ever getting to resting grounds.

To be honest, i never play with Wayward Compass or the map (well sometimes i do use it, but just to get the feel of adventuring through the game), as @BraxonGG says, it feels more immersive, and i have made a mind map of all the places of Hollow Knight, even Deepnest is no problem for me, going though it quickly to various places wherever needed. I do buy the map and compass though, just for completionist sake :d.

l really loved the game, but never quite understood why its boss design got so much praise. I´ve played DS 1-3 w/ DLCs, so I know I have the patience to spend even hours on single bosses. There wasn´t a single boss in HK except maybe for Radiance (thanks to THK) that took me hours to beat, but still I found many far more frustrating, because either they themselves had design issues or the runup was too annoying to make learning the fight enjoyable (looking at you, Traitor Lord and Radiance). Watcher Knights is just terribly designed as a gank fight. Both enemies have the exact same moveset, which makes it uninteresting. Once you´ve killed one a new one appears basically eliminating all focus strategies. There are no mechanics, either within the bosses moves or the battle arena, that allow you to separate the two. The fact they all look the same and get on top of one another means their otherwise well telegraphed attacks suddenly become incredibly hard to predict and avoid, especially as two attacks with similar windups require completely different responses (low roll vs. jump roll attack), resulting in cheap shots throughout the fight, which are tough to heal up against, because they can close gaps so quickly you can´t reliably get the time to heal yourself. The size of the arena will occasionally completely hide one of your enemies from you, leaving you with little to no time to react to his upcoming charge attack. Basically, everything you can get wrong in a gank fight, Watcher Knights gets wrong. The only positive thing I have to say about the fight is that is begins with only a single enemy, giving you a way to learn its limited moveset in an environment with little to no pressure. Even the chandelier trick is bad design imo, because it´s something you either know or don´t that doesn´t change the fight but instead just makes it objectively easier. It´s not a tactic, has no connection to playstyle or build, is nothing that requires skill or precision to pull off and the pay off is just a mathematic advantage over not doing it. Basically it feels like cheating and when I found out it doesn´t reset I immediately regretted doing it. I can only think of one DS boss with a comparable mechanic (DS 2s Mytha the Baneful Queen) and it´s rightfully hated. I imagine the fight gets exponentially easier if you attempt it only after you get the dash invulnerability, which would allow you to recover from randomly being attacked from the ground and air at the same time with arena wide attacks or from having mistakenly jumped into an air attack, but it´s not a requirement so it shouldn´t´ve been designed with that in mind. A simple fix for many of the issues would have been to make it be only two Watcher Knights, with the second entering only after the first one was down maybe a third of its health. Give them succinct colours and significantly buff their HP and just like that you´ve reintroduced a semblance of tactic for the player while at the same time making the attacks more readable for when they´re stacking. Then add a ranged attack that doesn´t gap close, allowing for separation of the two and you´re approaching something resembling a well designed fight.

@@mekullag The absolutely most useful advice for watcher knights is to use shadow dash, better if after you defeat traitor lord as that boss tests and improves your ability to use it. Without it I couldnt really do it in like 5 tries. Came back later in game with maybe 1 mask more(which didnt matter) and shadow dash and beat them I think 1-2 try. Being able to dash through their attacks is incredibly useful and easy

Possible but difficult, and impossible on steel soul. The trickiest part is getting Isma's tear, you've gotta pogo your way through the spike tunnel in the broken elevator shaft. Getting monarch wings is comparably easier, at least for me. Plus if you don't get downward dive, you can save Myla!!!

Hi Skurry, I really love your content a lot! This run was super fun to watch, both on stream and edited. I have one piece of feedback for the very beginning of the video: if you have a static screen for video, but are skipping around for audio, I would recommend that you detach the audio from the video in that instance, in order to maintain visual continuity despite the audio cuts. The only reason I mention this is that it can be a bit nauseating to watch

It's called "weird bounce" in the speedrunning community. They have a chance of developing it during the fight and, once they've done it, it'll persist until they die. It can be scary to deal with 2 knights that have it because of how unpredictable the movement can be.

Wow, that's some serious dedication. How much of this would be required in a low% run that ends at Hornet Sentinel instead of Hollow Knight? She's my favourite boss and I want to handicap myself as much as I can, but I'm struggling to get Mantis Claw without either dash or Vengeful Spirit (because of the Queen's Station jump. The Elder Baldur can be done w/o the spell if you pogo on your shade to Salubra, buy Longnail and then kill the Elder Baldur with range).

Vengeful spirit and longnail are both 1%, so you can just get vengeful spirit. As for percentage, I'm not sure if dash or crystal heart are required, but at the very least it's: 1% Vengeful Spirit 1% Hornet 1 2% Mantis Claw 1% Hornet 2

Why do you need fireball? You can kill the baldur with frame perfect inputs. You have to have the lowest percent possible and fireball is percent.

the ratio isn’t exactly accurate but one mandarin character can be equal to a 5 character word in english. this means shorter skips and text boxes which means faster gameplay

Fallout 4 and BOTW for instance use german or french depending on the category because the voice lines are shorter in them.
