16:11 I think it’s basic religious fanaticism. He’s a British guy who believes in religion and hates witches, like how it was back in the witch trial days. A lot of ppl can be so convinced they’re right that contrary evidence won’t make them reevaluate. Witches to him are evil, so he must be good if he’s getting rid of them. And since he’s been on this journey, for so long, one has to convince themselves they’ve doing the right thing so it’s not like their time was wasted. As a religious cult leader, he is good at manipulating ppl. Luz started off thinking everyone was stupid for falling for his shtick, only for the reveal to her was that she fell for it too. So it stands to reason he’s good at convincing himself as well. Also, “can reason with crazy” is funny cuz Luz says the same thing early on in s1. They’ve got a lot of cool parallels.

The way that Hunter stayed deep in denial about Belos true nature even when evidence was presented straight to his face just showed him how much he admired and looked to him. All that love, all that loyalty… and for what? To realize that he’s a pawn? That he doesn’t care about him? That he’s not the first of his kind and he probably won’t be the last? Goddamn, this show really knows how to hit us where it hurts…

I am amazed at how much these cartoons are able to get away with through implications. This is maybe my favorite episode of the entire show (im probably biased but i think it's also just objectively very good in its pacing and storytelling) and solidified hunter as my favorite character from the show. i feel so bad for this poor kid. like finding out that your entire life was a lie, you've been following and working for a truly evil person, and that your only "family"/the person you look up to the most is not only absolutely horrible to you (implications of manipulation, physical and emotional abuse) but has also killed "you" multiple times before And will probably do it again. not to mention the whole like. monstrous existence/not his own person Literally AND HIS NAME? HUNTER IS A TITLE. seeing his reaction was so upsetting, especially his very real panic attack at the end of the episode. really glad they went all in on belos being a villain and didn't redeem him this episode
