The Solidify Modifier is basically useless for hollowing 3D prints. The problem is that it only works properly on very, very simple objects. On real-world, more complex models, it causes tons of intersecting faces and bad geometry. The best way to hollow a model is to save it as an .stl and then load that into Meshmixer and use its Hollow tool. The Meshmixer Hollow tool works perfectly and it lets you set all sorts of parameters. Then save as .stl and load it back into Blender. It sounds like a pain, but it's pretty quick. I just wish Blender had a real Hollow modifier that worked.

Yeah that would be cool. I'll see if I can figure out a way to do that inside. Great idea 💡 👍 👏

You can get pretty good results with the solidify modifier if you use vertex groups and the offset to keep things like fingers and pointy ears solid. Complex mode can also help too but hollowing in Lychee or Chitubox is still much simpler although if you are willing to spend the time you CAN get more control in Blender. One weird trick that works sometimes is to duplicate your model, scale the duplicate down so that it is slightly smaller and inside the main model and then flip all the normals on the smaller version to make it become the inside walls. This gives you vertex level control over the "hollowness" but can be a bit of an effort too.

@@PrintThatThing any updates for complex model for hollow work? sharp corner is always an issue for hollowing.

I don't get why when I re-arrange the cube to be below the solidify modifier, instead of discovering the hollow head, the difference modifier seems ignored and I get again the whole monkey head bottom. Any idea? Thanks.

Is there a way to make the model thicker without overlap? I've got a project that has a thin spot like the ear on the monkey but I need it thicker then the not overlapping part. Is there a way to make some spots completely solid while others have a thickness? If that makes senses

can it work by making a hotwheels body?

damn just after making a second version of my object and just using boolean to make the inside of it lmao
@freckledcatcreations5 ай бұрын
Oh wait that seems like it would work much better than using solidify, because the latter has limitations like we see in the ear geometry here. Thanks for mentioning booleans!

"As long as your scale ratio is set to one"... thank you! forgot to apply the scale beforehand

Haha! Happens to us all. :)

What if you wanted to create a head, that is hollow but can be cut in two halves and retain the same hollowness (not reapply it on the two halves)? Is that possible?
@PrintThatThing Жыл бұрын
Yes. You would do this process then use a plane with the solidify modifier and then boolean subtract is from the main mesh. That way it stays non destructive workfloe

My mesh solidifies externally instead of just inside and never makes it all the way solid. Any tips guys?

You may have a hole in your mesh. Try the Make Manifold button the 3D Print Tool Box addon. You can also change the -1 to 0 or 1 to make the thickness go in the outer direction. Let me know if that helps
