Terrific actor, obviously very troubled individual who turned his wrath on some of his girlfriends, punching them and emotionally abusing them. Marlee Matlin who was with him involved with him for years and starred in Children of a Lesser God, had only a very curt and polite "We lost a great actor" Somehow Hurt managed to skate right past the whole "Me Too" movement and never got mentioned until after he was dead.

I moved to New Zealand (from the USA) in 1992 largely due to the music scene, and in general sensing there was a mini-burst of artistic creativity going on way down at the bottom of the Pacific. It further drew me to a west coast beach called Kare Kare where not only was The Piano made, but some of the cast took up residence there in a remarkable cliffside house owned by a bloke named Nigel Horrocks who became well, sort of a mate for several years, and also where my musical choice of the time, Crowded House, made their Together Alone album. Such great memories "in a valley lit by the moon". Kare Kare has both inspiring rugged energy and deathly menace (Eddie Vetter nearly drowned there swimming with Tim Finn). I remember Nigel phoning me and saying "Pearl Jam are jamming in my house!" Nigel also had all these photos of some guy called Harvey Keitel. Brush with greatness. LOL.
