Matthew.. I met William in Portland at my recumbent trike shop.. He was there picking up his new ICE trike. I didn't realize it was William Hurt, i just started chatting with another rider. He and i went to my favorite Vegan restaurant a week later. Over the last couple years, we never got the opportunity to go on a ride together, but we exchanged many emails... I once concluded with , "Your friend. Rob".. he replied, "we are not friends, that takes years and experiences together to have friendship." I replied, "William, i considered you a friend since the day you expressed a common interest in riding.. And until you give me a good reason not to call you friend, i will consider you friend".. That was the start of hundreds of communications between us. I found William to have a huge vocabulary and enormous capacity to comprehend his surroundings.. I will always feel a closeness to the man i called a friend. I only hope that he felt the same. I never knew the man that was described years ago in papers... The man i knew was gentle, kind, and incredibly intelligent.. Most of the words he used i had to look up their meanings. LOL I learned a lot from him... Near the end, i asked him, "William, are you ready to take that maiden voyage on that beautiful new trike..?" His reply, "i'm being quiet these days" And that was the last i heard from him..

This is so interesting, and I'm not at all surprised by his first reply to you-- so honest it almost knocks the wind out of you. And I love that you were not at all intimidated and felt comfortable enough to reply back.

David - I was redirected to this interview through one of your more recent Eddie Redmayne discussions. I absolutely understand why this is one of your favorite conversations. Such a thoughtful conversationalist - He seems to care deeply for his art and that of others. I'll be making a point of seeing this film.

I can't let him go yet. I keep coming back and back and back because I'm still shocked that he's no longer on the planet. For a short time, he was a leading man, when I was young. But, like John Cassavetes, he was obsessive about telling the truth, no matter how ugly it might be. I will always miss his long drawl. I will always miss his thoughts on theater.

This interview is worth transcribing onto paper. It's amazing.

Great Observation, I encourage you bot ignore you're intuitions, dont stop asking questions. I noticed a similar thing, that theirs a shift in entertainment. Where they dont wanna see certain things uf goes against the trends of the time like political agendas.

An actor must fall in love with the story. Life is not valuable unless one is happy. For an actor to have a great performance is best to be in love and lost for the storyline. The rest is about group and crew work with each character.

This guy's a psychopath. Some kind of actor, some kind of person. I'd never heard of the guy until 'History of Violence", then saw "Smoke" and some other stuff. Pretty enigmatic cat. Don't know they guy, but this just what I see. His voice seems to be behind a barricade, some kind of driftwood. Kind of laugh my guts out, but, at what? Some kind of somethin'. Don't mean this directly, Mr. Hurt, I don't know you.
