I just sent off my first quote for illustrations to be used on packaging for a client- I hadn't had to charge for a license fee before and it really gave me anxiety trying to figure out how much to charge. After doing a lot of research I feel like I settled on an industry standard and fair price. I feel really happy and confident with what I charged-hooray! And if the client isn't happy to pay that then I feel I can stand my ground within myself and know I shouldn't/wouldn't work for less. You inspire good things Holly! x

My takeaway from this video was today I prioritized my health and fitness and went for a swim! I have been drowning in work load for a couple of weeks and I have not been getting any exercise which is starting to effect my physical and mental health so I put this first today and feel a lot better for it...although I haven't got much work done today! Also this is a beaut vid with lots of interseting things! Thank you

Thank you for another chill vlog! And QUENTIN!!! He's so cute!!! That workload you've got sounds amazingly intense, hope it goes smoothly as possible!!! Ah! This might be a question for your cookbook or just in case you might know: do you have any go to vegan recipes that are amazing as leftovers? Like a casserole or something easy to reheat in the microwave? I get so impatient most of the time when I really want to get back into my work, but I know I need to eat something, so I was just wondering!!!

First of all, Quentin is so precious in that jacket! Thank you for sharing your experience of the climate strike. We had a bunch of people from a Christian group turn up to ours with signs saying that climate change is a hoax and it’s ‘sin’ that is the problem. They got mobbed by a bunch of students from a local LGBT group who threw their rainbow flag over their signs. It was kind of hilarious but it’s scary to think that there are so many people who still think this way. I don’t know what it’s going to take to change people’s minds.

I imagine that those women who tutted at you don't even do basic things like recycle etc or understand what is happening (and sadly, don't even care about it due to complete ignorance.) I remember before actually learning about XR and meeting people who run groups etc that I had the impression that they were quite extreme/aggressive (obviously don't hold those opinions now). I can't remember for the life of me why I thought that, might have been a misleading article when they first started. So it might be that kinda thing. A lot of people don't like having scary things/facts pointed out to them either. There will sadly always be people like that (in the same way that folk use the bacon argument against veganism.) Good luck with your deadline, make sure you look after yourself during the next few months

There will always be people who don’t agree. My hope in these situations is that maybe I am (and protesters are) planting seeds of ideas that people will eventually come around to. I had a “debate” this weekend with someone who posted something offensive against gender neutral people on FB. She told me she doesn’t care who she offends, and I respectfully educated her on the dangers of spreading intolerance against a discriminated group. After her reiterating her indifference, I can only hope she will think twice before hurting others in such a way. Maybe she will even find compassion in the future, or those who read the debate will think about it. So...you’re planting seeds. It’s a perfect way to frame this for climate change!

The strike was not small at all! Amazing attendance! You were watching Jazza, weren't you? :D About the mushrooms - in Polish we have different name for the white ones (pieczarki) and for the wild ones (grzyby) and the proper names for the wild ones are also widely known :3 It's a tradition to go mushroom picking (and in my mom's case also tick picking as she brought 4 with her -.-). You are so right about the prices for somebody's work! Keep fighting. Maybe being more open of how much people should charge would help? In on of 10 Hundred's video he explained what is his process of calculating the price of a mural so maybe something similar would be good, like the one you did about negotiating?

Urgh, the artist getting paid very little really makes me angry! I agree in standing strong on that price point! I do have to say it's discouraging for little baby artists like me who are still trying to develop an audience and no one is willing to pay a fair price for my work...I'm going to stay strong though! Lovely and interesting video Holly, hope you had a great time in Porto, Portugal is so lovely to paint, it's what I've been doing this summer. Climate Strike! Yea! Wish people instead of paving their driveways and buying that extra car would simply plant them in the Uk instead of always pointing the guilty finger elsewhere. Good luck with the sketches, and thankyou Holly.

Love your videos! Maybe they get angry when protestors block roads (not you) and drivers (who have to drive, let's face it we have to) are stuck in traffic with engines running, kind of defeating the whole purpose. I agree that's really silly, and it's unnecessary! Protests can be made without making things protested about actually worse, surely, ha. So maybe you wrongly got tarred with the same brush. Your protest looks much more sensible and your banner was great. V clear. Weird though isn't it about others' instant anger! Agree. I like the illustrators' brainstorming call thingy. I'd like to do that too. Useful.
@hollyexley

LachArt Gallery it’s inconvenient to block roads & cause disruption, but civil disobedience is a strategy that works, it’s worked throughout history. I will be joining those inconvenient protests next week because our government has refused to take the issue seriously. We’ve signed petitions, we’ve held marches, we’ve donated to charity, nothing works. The UN has stated we have 11 years left before we will face irreversible & deadly climate change (which is already escalating as emissions rise). I hope you can see that I am someone who doesn’t set out to disrupt others. I am a peaceful person, and yet I feel desperate. It is because I care about others that I will be taking part in action. I care about children’s futures, I care about ecosystems, I am scared for my own future. Please think of this when you see media coverage on the protests. Also know that during both the Manchester & the London shut downs- air pollution went down, not up.
@LillySchwartz
@LillySchwartz 5 жыл бұрын
Agreed Holly! To me it‘s funny when people complain about protests disrupting their everyday lives. That‘s the whole point! And I‘d say having 40 degrees C weather in regions where this NEVER happened is way more disruptive than the blocking of traffic. I read this joke over the summer: So, this is the hottest day of the past 100 years? Well, I‘m a glass half full type person, so I‘d say it‘s the coldest day of the next 100 years! Pretty much spot on.
@hollyexley
@hollyexley 5 жыл бұрын
@@LillySchwartz Exactly, the disruption to come from climate change will be worse than a few weeks of us on the streets. We have to do this.
@lachartgallery
@lachartgallery 5 жыл бұрын
@@hollyexley I think, respectfully, you missed my point, Holly. I was saying about causing vehicles to sit in traffic with the engine running, thus exacerbating the cause, surely. A cause with which I agree, as said above. Also said above is that i understand this is not what you did at all, but perhaps the aggressive person you met wrongly assumed you might do the same as others have done? I admire your presence at these protests, honestly I do. Misunderstanding, I think.
@lachartgallery
@lachartgallery 5 жыл бұрын
@@LillySchwartz Hi Lilly. My point is not about disrupting people's lives, it's about situations we see where protestors cause jams where drivers are sitting with the engine running! Surely this planning can be improved, since many drivers with engines polluting is just making the situation worse. There must be a better way. And again, I say, I had not implied that Holly had done this at all, merely that the aggressive person might have mistakenly thought the protest would cause that? Just guessing at the person's aggression, simply and all.

People are usually angry because they feel threatened. As if recycling, changing your eating habits to a reduced meat diet, or just picking entertainment that is clean makes you look better than them. Change threatens people's way of life and makes them feel guilty. For instance, we are having an air show with old planes from WWII here in California this weekend flying over the beach. I personally don't want to see it or be involved. It attracts over 100,000 people to our beach who leave trash that goes in the ocean, and in addition, this year they are flying the planes over the ocean. This also is problematic to me because it pollutes the air and the ocean.... I don't need to see the planes flying. I can enjoy them in a museum where they don't pollute the earth. However, people don't want to think about this stuff. Protesting forces them to see it and to face it. It takes away from the excitement of the event or mars the beauty of every day life; it forces them to think of alternative entertainment and clean ways of life that are inconvenient for them to adapt too. Most people I have found don't like things that are inconvenient. My husband and I also visited Paris for our anniversary and the taxi man told us that taxis drive visitors around this homeless encampment because people don't want to see it. Unfortunately, this is the way people think. They just don't want to see the problem.

When I have been irritated by protesters it's generally been when they have been aggressive about it or when they have done it in such a way as to block off streets/deliberately inconvenience/shame people. I don't just mean climate protest, anti-abortion protesters setting up outside or as close to abortion clinics as they can to harass women and staff is one that particularly irritates me. It was interesting seeing your video about a protest a while ago because it looked much like a festival. Watching it is probably one of the few times I have felt positive about the idea of protest and I appreciated seeing it from your perspective.
