When Simone first came to Hollyoaks I absolutly hated her...and I think viewers were supposed to!...now, I absolutly love her!...she never fails to make me laugh when she's acting as someones defense and behind the whole "tough lady" fascade she's really a kind hearted and soft person....

Diego Explorer It wasn`t exactly a tough case. The police had nothing, all the time they neither could tie Mercedes to the woods, nor had forensic evidence connecting her to Carl`s death, or to Carl. In real life Mercedes would not have been arrested, but brought in for questioning. Only if she during that questioning said something the police could prove both to not be true, and of significance to the case, would they have considered extending her stay, first up to 72 hours - and if there were more evidence linking Carl to Mercedes after that, she would have been arraigned in court and possibly held on remand - or she would have been free, either because the court had found the evidence insufficient, or because she had been granted, and had managed to raise, bail. In this case, because of the potential risk of Mercedes creating an alibi for herself in she were allowed to remain free (someone who claimed they had seen her looking for Bobby), the police likely would have pushed hard for remand. Mercedes being the one person in Hollyoaks with the most obvious motive to could have wanted Carl out of the way (most of the current population in Hollyoaks don`t even know him, having arrived after he left). For that reason any additional inconsistencies in Mercy`s statements, or witness observation or physical evidence (like CCTV footage), either placing her closer to the woods than she has admitted to, or which could prove her statement of where she claims to have been a lie - and Mercy would likely have been held on remand. But motive alone would not have been enough to keep her locked up, since motive in itself does not constitute reasonable suspicion, which is the requirement the police have meet to lawfully could make an arrest. The police would either have had to be able to prove Mercedes not only had motive, but also opportunity - or they would have had to tie her directly to Carl`s death by forensic findings on Carl`s body or the place where the body was found in the woods. Quite possibly all three. It may look like Simone is an amazingly good lawyer in this scene. But frankly, if she hadn`t been able to get Mercedes released here, she would have been pretty useless as a lawyer. Still, at least she is a 100 times better than the idiot James, who doesn`t seem to know anything about the law at all - except how to break it with maximum risk to his own career and freedom. As a lawyer James is a walking disaster of the seemingly brain-dead kind, operating more outside the law, than within it. And that to such an extent he probably would have faced a more severe sentence than any of the people he has represented in criminal cases, should every crime he has done come to be known. A list that includes serious fraud (swindling Tony`s restaurant from him), immoral earnings (pimping Harry), corruption of justice (framing Ste for Amy`s murder by planting false evidence), accomplice to attempted arson after the fact (Marnie got Scott to set fire to the restaurant) and extortion (blackmailing Harry). A pretty rare and impressive list for a career criminal - but for a lawyer, almost unheard of. And that without including what James did to Sami`s dad and the company James himself and Sami`s dad worked for.

My guess would be Hunter. From his need for pills after that date, his hysterics when first discovering Carl`s body - not to mention his nightmares - it looks like he is trying to suppress a memory he is reluctant to face. He might not even be aware he killed Carl, cause he has suppressed every recollection of it. But every time he is confronted with either Carl`s body or anything that makes him remember something to do with Carl`s death, those memories threatens to come back in his conscious mind again. Something he cant handle, and therefore has nummed them with pills to keep those memories hidden.
