All three characters in this scene have been abused by someone who is supposed to love them. Ste: from the stepfather, in fact, when he saw him again, the frightened child who was doing it came back. Then later from the first boyfriend who had or rather maybe the first relationship with an older man she had, the one with Brendan ... James, from his father. A man who has never accepted his sexuality ... James after being the victim of a rape by Finn, returns to confront Finn, and tell him to go somewhere to live, away from Hollyoaks, and then come back permanently , it was hoped he would find a normal, stable relationship, instead he found a wolf in sheep's clothing ... Someone should give these 3 characters some peace and quiet for once ...

It's horrible and sad that they have all been victims of abuse. Both from parents in James and Ste's case or from partners like John Paul and Ste. Abuse messes with a person, it's gonna take some time for John Paul to sort himself out. But I do like their bond and friendship, these three are always gonna care about each other and be there for each other.

His school friend raped him. He and Ste were together then James came along and broke them up. His boyfriend/fiancé who died manipulated him at every turn in the relationship that made anger seem part of what a relationship entails so he treats his friends with aggression that is uncalled for because they support him and they know how he feels and will talk with him about it but he won't let them in to start healing. His Mother killed his most recent boyfriend/ fiancé.

Swear down, Hollyoaks didn't have such obvious, clunky and unrealistic exposition ten years ago. People don't usually talk directly and emotionally clearly like this to one another outside of therapy; especially not men (not saying they shouldn't, just that they don't). The better, more subtle 3D way to write dialogue is obliquely, characters coming at their emotions sideways and projecting and sublimating.

No. John Paul has never loved James, and has never respected him. He's always looking down on him and judging him (like when he chose George, "the light", over James, "the darkness", after James had tried all he could to warn JP about George's real nature). James deserves better.
