Remember this......BALANCE is the key to life. Avoid extremes and you'll go in the right direction. Existence is both material and spiritual. Having too much is just as bad as having too little. Greed is just as ugly as poverty.

yeah but the point is that society has skewed to an extreme. Being “balanced” in an extremely consumeristic is still being extremely consumeristic

Though Western world is Advanced but still the people are depressed, have anxiety & are mentally ill which tells that though they have every comfort around them but their Soul is not Happy. This must be a lesson for people from Third World countries who run after Materialism to seek Happiness, that True Happiness never lies in Materialistic things. Don't be fooled by Consumerism & let not this World deceive you any further.

Vanity is the best explanation to consumerising . I do like recicling .People in general throught away many good things , but most of all don't take advantage of this . People want things brand new , and don't care to save all the money they can . In a society of progress , its citizens enjoy lixury things eventhough they pay it with credit cards . This is how it works . A society of borrowing and spending .

I don't believe consumerism is a part of capitalism, rather a failure to adapt to the current methods of economy. Just like people failed to adapt to the fact that there's more readily available food nowadays. Instead of hunting, they just walk into MacDonalds. Result? They have a chance to get addicted to it and some become obese. Can you blame advertising for that? No. Adaptation is to blame. Natural selection. Example: I've only owned one pair of shoes at a time (switching every 3-4 years), a jacket (switching ever 5-7 years) and only two smartphones (the first one I got was an iphone 5, after that an iphone 7 (because the 5 one broke), I've not owned a blackberry, rather a samsung before that). Also, I don't use social media and there's no picture of me (besides my ghost profile via other people taking pictures with me in it) on the entire internet. It's easy, it's called adaptation and intelligence. Sorry.

Extra context: adaptation in the sense of DNA methylation and biochemical changes as a result, also a factor of hereditary and environment. Think of the endocrine disruptors in our environment, toxic things that ruin the proper function of a vital part of our brains that makes hormones. That leads to behavior disorder, eating disorder and consumerism too. There's too much confounding here. You can't put the blame on advertisement. I frankly can't even remember a single advertisement in my life. I'm told to have 150 IQ as well. Bachelor uni. Sorry again.

Capitalism is fueled by consumerism and consumer needs. Entrepreneurs create a "need" for people to buy the product. In the past(before 1600's) 80% of the jobs/skills are viewed as equal. But now there are jobs that are paid high(Engineers,Doctors,Lawyers and corporate positions) vs the jobs position that are low paid(Farmers, laborers and factory workers ).
