This was the era where hair dye was generally used by younger women (those who were in their 20's and 30's). The general mindset was that ladies of a certain age (ie: over 40) would let nature takes it course and let their hair go grey.

Anyway advertisement is evil lol xx

Ronnie, it goes in cycles. in the 20's and 30's, they were thin. in the 40's through the 80's, they were fuller, and with the 60's being a little thinner. In the 90's through the early 2000's, they were very thin again, and full brows have recently come back into fashion.

Back then mascara was just a black brick of pigment, you needed to wet the brush and swipe it against the block of black to get the mascara- that's why all those old films have the great "mascara running down the face" scenes! I think dealing with that probably forced them to invent false eyelashes pretty quickly....

Actually, the woman might not be anywhere past mid-forties. People aged a lot faster and a lot harder back then, and she would have been a young woman during the stress and rationing/poor nutrition of World War I. Bad diet and stress don't make for graceful aging.
@TheKazadoodle
@TheKazadoodle 10 жыл бұрын
He distinctly said - but you can't be over 45 ... so he wasn't saying she was 40, he was saying she's past 45, but didn't give her real age as that wouldn't be polite :) And that woman was definitely past 45, she was 55 to 60 easy. Yes, people did age faster, but not at supersonic speed.
@StellaWaldvogel
@StellaWaldvogel 8 жыл бұрын
I don't think they aged faster. If anything, they'd have aged more slowly because they ate a lot less processed food and there wasn't a massive hole in the ozone. Look at Mae West, she didn't even make her first movie until she was almost 40. And a lot of actresses from the 1920's and 1930's still looked great decades later.
@FunSizeSpamberguesa
@FunSizeSpamberguesa 8 жыл бұрын
+Stella Waldvogel Mae West (and all the actresses of that era) wore a metric crap-ton of makeup. They look so perfect because they're literally painted that way -- that, and like today, some people just win the genetic lottery. West also never had to work hard for a living, and probably had a more consistently nutritional diet than many. Fresh produce was expensive, and its availability more limited than it is today, simply because they couldn't preserve it like we can now; while they ate less processed food, many also were to some degree malnourished -- unless they were rich. No such thing as sunscreen, makeup could have some terrifying ingredients (some mascara had *mercury* in it right up through the 1950's, and blush had vermilion, which is extremely toxic), and by World War II absolutely everyone -- and I do mean everyone -- smoked. All of those things age a person prematurely, and I can see it in things like pictures of my grandmother and great aunts at my age versus pictures of myself. (I'm 39, and they all look ten to fifteen years older than I do.)
@StellaWaldvogel
@StellaWaldvogel 8 жыл бұрын
I agree that there were a lot of variables involved. You can't lump, say, Myrna Loy and the people in the Dust Bowl photos together. I'd like to see some solid research on the whole topic. For the record, one of my grandmothers lived into her 80's without a wrinkle in her face, the other had a lot of lines by 40. So yes, genetics. I think one thing that does age us badly now is having to hold a job AND be responsible for the kids and the housework and everything else. It does help to have time to rest and take care of yourself.
