The 'Get Girl' Gene Tierney's life was seemingly equally cursed and blessed. Born into high society, she rebelled against life as a society wife and threw herself into acting. Hollywood soon fell in love with her staggering beauty, but the studios soon began to push her to intense dieting, taking up smoking and, eventually, alcoholism to deal with the relentless pressure.
Despite the violent intensity of her psychological struggles, and a media campaign by the New York Times to destroy her, she was nominated for an Academy Award. She also starred in 'Laura', playing one of the most influential and mysterious characters in movie history.
If you'd like a little more on Gene's life, we recommend grabbing a copy of 'Gene Tierney: A Biography' by Michelle Vogel. It's currently available on kindle and in paperback on Amazon at the link here

Whew....always enjoyed her acting ability!!! Had no idea her life was so traumatic and difficult.. Aga Khan obviously loved her very much. As did a few others....Howard Lee who took on the challenge by marrying her. And made her happy!! Laughing together about her condition, must have been a great way to lighten the mood. Absolutely exquisite looking and sweet nature...never blaming anyone else. .

I had no idea that, "The Mirror Cracked From Side to Side", by Agatha Christie was based on Gene Tierney's life. I am so sorry for her, her poor little baby and Cassini's cowardice. She was one of my favorite actresses. "Laura" was my all time favorite film with Gene and I thought the movie was perfectly cast. Gene Tierney's performances always captured me and I loved her in every film I've seen. To know she was a loving and caring mother regardless of the problems she faced warms my heart. She was a brave, beautiful, intelligent and loving person. Thank you for this excellent report on Gene Tierney's life. Well Done!

Gene Tierney was one of the most underrated actresses of the Golden Era - Tierney was certainly much more than a pretty face and was never afraid to show a dark, off-putting and arrogant side in her characters. And the words ‘more than a pretty face’ not only refer to her talents as an actress but also to the fact that the word ‘pretty’ doesn’t even begin to describe her riveting and transcendent beauty which sometimes made it hard for her to get the credit as an actress she so richly deserved. In black and white, Gene Tierney could glow and shine even in the darkest settings, in Technicolor she looks like a painting. Her beauty, despite its elegance and style, never appears innocent or soft - instead, she could explore various shades and layers in her characters, turning her face more than once into a window to her inner feelings and this way extend the women she played beyond her own beauty. Since I live in Houston I have visited Gene Tierney's grave-site where Tierney, Daria and Christina are buried, Not too far from Tierney's grave-site is where Howard Hughes is buried

Howard certainly loved to look at beautiful women. Elvis went to see a woman once that was on Howard Hughes contracts. There was a car driving around her house all evening. After thst happened a couple of times, They discovered it was some of Hughes men keeping an eye on her at her home, which Hughes owned. So Elvis started sending a car to bring her to his house in the Hollywood hills. Hughes men didn’t know if she was in the car or not. It was a black limo and so they picked her up at the door. I can’t remember who it was that was under Hughes contracts. It wasn’t Tierney. It was another Beauty out of Hollywood. Debra pageant. I had to look it up. I couldn’t stand it cause I couldn’t remember. She & Elvis were friends. Only friends. She said so and so did Elvis.

Poor Lady, The public is cruel & unforgiving, behind the picture and projected ideal model fit. There is a longstanding indigenous superstition in different cultures around the world where people don't like being behind cameras or pictures believing it slowly drains from the life source soul&spirit of health and well being. Maybe there are negative parallels.

Her response to pressure to send her fragile daughter away was natural and appropriate. their bond and touch was needed by her child and she knew it and probably felt her child’s deep loss of her. Today there is awareness of the effects on institutionalization. She seems to have responded to tragedy’s as we all might, but with more courage and sensitivity than many.

His classroom was the auditorium so he often played different types of educational films on the old time projector. The one movie he had was "Laura" which he showed numerous times. Gene Tierney -- stunning on so many levels. This woman had character and not enough of that is highlighted these days. One could argue that those with character do not seek the limelight, as they are simply too busy with getting on with life, that is, demonstrating that they think of someone other than themselves. This has been another wonderful tribute and thank you "HM". Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the woman who exposed her to German measles was a nurse no less!!

I always thought, Gene Tierney was so beautiful, and had great acting ability. I love the old movies, especially hers. I really appreciate your telling her story. My late aunt was in and out of mental wards at a young age, many years before I was born. She was treated better later, and was put on proper meds. I'm sorry Gene suffered so much with her illness for so long. She kept trying though, but it was best for her to retire and relax in her latter years. God rest her. ❤️🌹🌹🙏

I have watched several of your videos, and find your narration very pleasant. I appreciate the depth you bring to these personalities. In this one, I was particularly interested in Zanuck's concern for Gene Tierney's state of mind. He apparently was afraid that she was "suicidal", but that word was bleeped out. Was this intentional, or imposed by KZbin's algorithm? If the latter, I find it very disturbing. How did we ever get to a p!ace where ordinary speech can be censored in such a trivial and nonsensical way? It's just getting out of hand...

Hi, sadly, yes, we are forced to 'bleep' out a certain number of words due to strict KZbin policies. To their credit, they seem to have recently evolved these policies to be slightly more relaxed. 'Bleeping' seemed a better alternative to us than just avoiding the subject altogether.

I don’t see that you erred from the truth when recounting Joe Kennedy’s decision for Rosemary’s lobotomy, despite other opinions shared in this comment section. The history of Joe Kennedy is despicable, as is the origins of his sons’ move up the ladder of politics, facilitated by his crooked connections and dealings. They may have become a rich family (through ill-gotten gain), but they are not untouchable, despite the tragedies which befell (or were brought on by) them.

Nothing personal, and I try to convey this to every KZbinr: do not censor the word suicide. Pretending it doesn’t exist does more harm than good, and is not worth the few dollars you receive from AdSense and/or any other monetization platforms with juvenile content filters. The bizarre censorship criteria that KZbin imposes will change sooner or later. We all know it’s ridiculous. Please, while you still have an outlet that produces quality, intriguing videos, don’t give into the moral panic.
@HollywoodMysteries

We appreciate your thoughts on this. However, it goes beyond demonetization as KZbin will effectively remove or hide the video if certain words trigger the algorithm. And so the hard work we put in will never be seen by anyone, as has already occurred three times. To their credit, they have begun to roll out more nuanced guidelines and tools for censorship, but this one issue is one they are very sensitive about, following several lawsuits, and we don't see any other way to circumvent it at this time. If their policies change, we will of course stop censoring the word.

Thank you for saying this. I see this more and more. One of the words: "unalived" has become popular and it makes me sick! For those of us whom have lost loved ones to "murder" "suicide" these new sugar coated words are insulting. It doesn't soften the blow nor does it change what happened.

Rose Kennedy did NOT agree to have rosemary lobotomized. She worked so hard to get rm to be a functional person and rm was doing good. Joseph didnt want her pregnant so he had the operation without Mrs.K consent or knowledge. It broke her heart, so when the old bastard had a stroke after golfing she would not let his niece take him to the Dr. Instead she insisted the niece take him up to his room to "rest". Hours later she allowed her to call for help. By then the stroke had done its damage! Karma is a B***H, and so is a woman scorned!😂😂😂 lmao

Never watched a bio on Gene, watched Marilyn Monroe, Marlene Dietrich, Vivien Leigh, Carole Lombard, Jean Harlow, Ava Gardner. Leigh and Tierney had known mental illness, Leigh slept around as part of it. Many beautiful women seem unwell, the industry takes broken people and ruins them, still does. Don't know why people still contribute to it 😒

You mistake. Rosemary's lobotomy was arranged only by her father. Her mother was not informed and was distraught at the negative consequences. However she was distraught so many times during her marriage to Joe Kennedy that ultimately. She just had to go on, regardless.

You got a lot of the Kennedy stuff wrong. Joe was never was a bootlegger. A lobotomy while horrifying, was cutting edge treatment at the time. Kennedy was protecting his daughter from sexual exploitation as much as the family's reputation.

I love this channel and the amount of research you put into it and the obvious care you have for the people you profile. This is why I'm very disappointed to see you've done very little truth-finding in the story of Rosemary Kennedy. There's an excellent book with well-documented sources telling her life story. It looks, though, as if you've relied on gossip and assumption to finish her story. Her family wouldn't have had her presented to the Queen if they were n'tproud of her. They loved her as one does a sister. Due to her lack of oxygen during birth, she was left with physical and emotional problems. She was physically aggressive toward staff and as she got older -- and larger -- this became a more serious problem. Joseph Kennedy had her in one school after another but every one found they couldn't control her and sent her back. The story you put forward that Kennedy had her lobotomized due to his fear she'd get pregnant is conjecture. Having the lobotomy was one person's decisions -- Joseph Kennedy -- and none of the other members of the family supported it. (Again, I'm basing this on actualy evidence and documentation.) Describing the lobotomy -- which was horrific but not done with a butter knife -- is so disrespectful, especially if you're presuming to feel sorry for her. I won't be following this channel any more.

Thank you for this informative biography of GT. I'd tried watching a movie of her's and found her acting to be so wooden, it was unwatchable. Perhaps she was unable to show emotion and was unwell but not enough for it to be completely debilitating at the time. Describing lobotomy as barbaric t0rture is accurate. There was absolutely NO research showing benefit, and no care was taken to "do no harm". Early ECT was rough and they didn't know how much voltage to use. I've met many elderly people who were subjected to ECT and their brains were fried. Psychiatrist Dr Peter Breggin campaigned strongly against lobotomizing patients and introduced "Talk Therapy". It sounds like GT may have been blessed by his work.
