Rappers React To The Cranberries "Zombie"!!!

Zombie is a protest song inspired by the murder of two young boys, Tim Parry 12 and Jonathan Ball 3, in the 1993 Warrington bombings. They were out shopping with adults, looking for cards for their mothers for Mothering Sunday. The word "zombie" in the song refers to those involved on both the British and Northern Irish side who blindly followed orders without thinking for themselves. The song is one of a number of protest songs against The Troubles that raged from the 1960's until the Belfast Agreement was signed in 1998. I've always lived just across the water in West Wales and grew up only ever associating the North of Ireland with The Troubles. I worked in a government office and we were always on high alert. Delores' voice is beautiful, the music is hard and the lyrics are hard hitting. the video shows actual soldiers on patrol on the streets there and the children are playing on the real streets. Kills me to hear it, my eldest son is only two years older than Jonathan Ball would have been, but it's a song that makes you stop and remember how fragile peace is and how easily it can be lost and everything that goes with it.

While other commenters are rightly pointing out that this is about the "Troubles", more specifically it was inspired by the IRA murdering two children in Warrington during one of their many bombing campaigns. At the time this was released, in 1994, it was an extremely brave thing to do. No one dared criticize the IRA normally because they would then be declared an enemy and targeted by their terrorists, either through car bombings or ongoing harassment and threats to their family and friends etc. It was so bad that stations refused to play it because they were scared they would be targeted by the terrorists too. There's a lot of interesting information about this video. They pretended to film a "documentary" to be able to get close to the soldiers patrolling. They had no idea it was for an anti-war music video. So, the footage you see in this is actually genuine.

35 years ago an Irish family moved in beside me. He told me they decided to leave Northern Ireland after his 9 year old was brought home by British soldiers. He was out playing with a toy gun and the soldier told the father he was lucky they never shot him. That is what made them decide to leave.

This was a response to the early 90s death of kids in Warrington, England as a result of an IRA bomb. The IRA claim to fight for the people but she's saying that their actions are not her or her family, that's not what they want. Basically the violence and fighting doesn't represent the people. 1916 is when independence was declared in Ireland, although there were years of violence to come before the declaration was officially realised and it also came with the separation of Northern Ireland and then (due to this) continued fighting. It was only in 1998 the the Good Friday Agreement happened and the major violence was halted, but there are still issues and tensions.

He thought they were a bunch of dumb terrorists that killed more children and Irishman then Brits and he wanted nothing to do with it or the British bossing the Welsh around. This song is about the war between Northern Ireland and the Republic Of Ireland and British occupation. It was a war in part with religion with the Protestants vs the Catholics. The song was written after children were killed in one of the many bombs that were being set off in the 80's.

I have lived in Warrington UK for my entire life and listening to this song brings back a lot of painful and terrifying memories. I was just 14 when the bus that my friends and I were on had just turned onto Bridge street approaching the town centre when the 1st bomb went off, and before we could comprehend what had happened we heard the second explosion and could clearly see the carnage unfolding. I will never forget that day. The Cranberries released the song Zombie in protest to the violence that had occurred that day, the continuing violence in Ireland and it will always hold a dear place in my heart. For Dolores O'Riordan to sing alongside the Bad Wolves in an updated cover of this song in protest of the violence which still occurs till the present day would have been amazing, and I'm whole heartedly saddened that she died before it was made possible. This song will be forever in Warringtons heart. Thank you

To add to the Bad Wolves cover Yes Dolores actually worked with them and gave them her blessing on it. She was scheduled to voice some tracks on this song the day she passed. Her passing affected Tommy Vex so much They went on to set up a college trust fund with the proceeds of the song going straight to her children.

Dolores was talking about IRA that were seen as terrorist on British side, and liberators on Irish side, however IRA did do some various bad tactics like bombs in cars and such. Can't remember the spesifics on what happened that Dolores made this song. If memory serves there were kids killed in 1 of those improvised bombs and that caused an up raw.

I think the "zombies" are veterans of a former war that have now taken that war to the people, to the civilians. "In your head, they're still fighting. With their tanks and their bombs and their guns." Edited: I've never seen it but I think it might be same war portrayed in the movie Braveheart. Another Cranberries song worth a deep dive is Linger. Written in memory of two little boys blown up by an ira bomb in warrington england. She mentions guns and bombs which is the paramilitaries like the ira inla uda uvf lvf red hand commandos and more. The tank reference is about the british army and its role not only in the troubles but the 800 year plus conflict between ireland and great britain. She also mentions 1916 which is when the irish volunteers had failed uprising to free ireland from british rule were all the leaders were executed which in turn led to the irish war of independence and later the irish civil war. In 1921 ireland was partitioned against the majority of the whole island wishes but unionist threats of violence sowed the seeds for what was to come. Dolores deplored violence from any side and stood by that all her life. She took a big risk writing this song but wrote ot for all the right reasons. Over 3500 dead and 50,000 maimed over 30 years on a small corner of ireland. We have peace now but its very fragile.

RIP Dolores O'Riordan, she was the soul of this group and will always be missed. Denny DeMarchi is the only other member (touring) who has passed on. Bad Wolves did a cover of this that was...modern in it's lyrical changes, but I feel did justice to them. While Dolores never completely revealed her story behind "Zombie" speculation varies from this song being written in protest of the two young victims who were killed in the 1993 Warrington bombings all the way to an outcry from the Holocaust. But it's largely agreed the message is that it revolves around the senseless death of children during war and terror attack. Her signature singing style is actually yodeling and deliberate. In response to your war's on American soil, the American Revolutionary War, the Civil War and the War of 1812 were all fought on American soil. World War II, the Mexican-American War and The French and Indian War both took place on areas that would eventually be part of the United States.

As a new viewer, having one of the hosts say this is one of his favorite songs (about zombies) and then disregard watching the video bewilders me. The imagery of the kids playing, especially with hurleys, juxtaposed with the the soldiers makes the lyrics of the Trouble stand out. "The Troubles" in Ireland lasted 30 years from 1968 - 1998...neighborhoods divided between Catholic and Protestant. The Protestants wanted to be part of Great Britian but the Catholic are Nationalist, how wanted the English out. But it started WAY before that when the English invited settlers, who were Protestant, to Ireland that started the problems. There was a campaign in the whole of Ireland to break free from English rule but the settlers wanted to stay with England. To "settle" the problem the England gave up a majority of Ireland but kept Northern Ireland....and it has been a problem ever since.

Yeah, as other commenters have said, this song is generally about The Troubles in Northern Ireland. The Troubles was a conflict between paramilitary groups who wanted Northern Ireland to be free of British rule and paramilitary groups who were loyal to the British, with British military involvement as well. It lasted from the late '60s to the dawn of the 21st century, and was very bloody. Even now that The Troubles have ended, there is still occasional violence in Northern Ireland. Just in 2019, a journalist named Lyra McKee was gunned down in Derry when dissident Republicans opened fire on a group of police officers whom she was standing near.

Bad Wolves did a phenomenal cover Delores was supposed to do the song with them but she passed right before they were set to record. BW almost didn't do the song but they did it and gave all the proceeds to her 3 children

As a few others have mentioned, the song is about a bombing that was part of "The Troubles" in Northern Ireland. I went to Belfast in 2005 and the paintings/murals/graffiti on the sides of building and walls are all still there. The sentiments are still there. The barbed wire and metal spikes on the brick walls around elementary schools are STILL there. It's very sobering. The reason I was there was to pay respects to Giuseppe Conlon, a main figure from one of my favorite movies of all time: In the Name of the Father. It was based on the autobiographical book Proved Innocent and stars Daniel Day-Louis, Pete Postlethwaite, and Emma Thompson. Do yourselves a favor and watch it.

The vocal singing she is doing after the word Zombie is called keening. It’s a type of singing done at Irish funerals. Since this song is about war and the killing of young children in an attack. I think it was a bombing but not 100% sure on that. FYI I learned this from another comment on a different reaction video to this song. I have a lot of Irish in me and wish I knew more about my heritage.

And yes the recruitment of young men to fight this on going conflict for freedom between Northern Ireland and Great Britain. We lost Deloris way to soon. One of the most tragic oft repeated sentiments we feel about talented, inspirational artists.....
