I lived in Hawaii for a bit. I had to unlearn habits & learn that two different vowel sounds could be successive without a consonant to break up each sound. Apostrophes take the place of percussive consonants. Beautiful language. Beautiful state. Beautiful people. I thank the Hawaiian people for having me. Blessed to live in Kaneohe Bay for 3 years. If I could retire anywhere, it'd be in Kailua.

This is an incredibly moving song. It's my favourite version. I cry every time. My father passed away in 2006, my family and I didn't know until 2009 (long story) but we learned this song was played at his funeral. Maybe that's why I've always felt a connection and overwhelmed with love when listening to this song. Whatever it may be this is a beautiful song :) Ps. It's said that Israel recorded this song in one take.

This song genuinely brings tears to my eyes because we played it at my dad’s funeral. Iz had the sweetest, gentlest voice I’ve ever heard. It’s a reassuring sound that brings peace to me that over that rainbow is heaven. It’s a bittersweet song because I just think of my dad being in heaven.

IZ is an inspiration and was loved by all. I was at Makua when they spread his ashes from the Hokule'a. Cars stopped along the 2 lane road leading to Ka'ena bringing traffic to a stand-still. Hundreds of people were wading in the water and hundreds more were on land. A procession of big rigs blew and held their horns echoing through the valley while his ashes were placed into the ocean making it sound as if the State of Hawaii was crying . . . it's a moment I will never forget. An incredible celebration of life for an incredible man!!

I definitely cried the first few times I heard this, even before I knew dude was dead. Just the tone of the song has that effect on a lot of people. And yeah, he did seem like such a genuinely kind soul. I really hope he’s at peace, but I don’t think I need to worry- he seemed more at peace in his life than anyone I’ve ever met.

Here's your chicken answer: In the 1700s, sugarcane was introduced to the islands, and large plantations soon sprung up. These plantations brought with them a menagerie of animals, including chickens. When the sugar industry began to decline in the late 1800s, many of these animals were simply let loose and left to fend for themselves. - Wikipedia

I heard this version on a commercial maybe? I didn’t know the story of this man. When this started, I thought this was the ultimate portrayal of joy and hope, then at the end I figured out what was happening. That was sad, but the people there were celebrating him, so that was even beautiful as well.

My mom passed from Pancreatic Cancer in 2017. She was only 68. Her brothers and sisters put together a collection of videos/photos/memories and this version of this song was in the background. I will always cherish that day everytime I hear this song. It is also a good way to describe my Mom. She was always full of love and light in the darkest of times, wholesome and pure. She loved everyone even people she just met. I miss her a lot! Love ya Mom! 🌈❤

Never be ashamed to cry. This song is beautiful, and that's the true power of music: to make us feel. Whenever I'm in a bittersweet mood, this is one of the songs I play. I have a four suggestions that are in a similar vein: 🔹"Blue" - Mai Yamane / The Seatbelts - from the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack. The first minute is a bit of a gospel vibe, but the rest of it? Absolutely beautiful. Mai's voice is so soulful. It's a hopeful bittersweet. It makes me cry a good bit. 🔹"Old '55" - Tom Waits - IDK if either of you still keep up with pro wrestling, but this song was played in the tribute video to Brodie Lee who tragically died two years ago. It's become forever associated in my mind. The song itself is great and I think you'd like it. 🔹"Feed Jake" - Pirates of the Mississippi - It's a country song with a dog, but it's a hell of a lot more than that if pay attention to the lyrics. You might even relate to it, as there's a line that says: "You know you got my heart, babe / But music's got my soul..." The music video really adds to it. It's a favorite of mine that I wish was reacted to more. 🔹"Miracle" - Jon Bon Jovi - from the Young Guns II soundtrack. If I could afford Patreon, this would be my song suggestion. It's fairly upbeat in tempo, but it's the lyrics where the bittersweetness comes into play. I'd love for you to do a lyrical analysis. It's one of my favorite songs. Fun fact: the official video has a young, pre-Friends Matt LeBlanc in it! I don't think it's ever been reacted to, either, so you'd be the first. 😁 (In all honesty, I would legitimately scrape the money together to pay you to review the entire Young Guns II soundtrack. I'm serious, name your price. It's all Jon Bon Jovi featuring different artists and musicians such as Jeff Beck and Little Richard. It's an absolutely amazing album and one of my favorites of all time.)

From what I've read, Iz was the only non-royal or politician to ever receive a state funeral in Hawaii, that's how universally he was beloved. I wish everyone could hear his song "Hawaii '78", a lament for his ancestors and how they would feel about all the changes that have come to the islands - I wouldn't have thought it possible, but I think it's even more beautiful and made me cry even more than this one.

IZ is such an inspirational person, and a Hawaiian national treasure. He was an avid activist for rights of native islanders, who are effectively considered "second class citizens" on their own island. He raised awareness about it in his music and is easily considered Hawaii's greatest musician. This song specifically was purely spur of the moment, he rang a friend of his that that then contacted a local recording studio for him, at 3am, stating that he had an idea for a song and really needed to record it now, and was told he could come in to do his recording if he made it in 15 minutes! He arrived and did it in one take! After IZ died he was one of only 3 people (and the only non government official) to be honored by having the Hawaiian flag flown at half staff for his funeral, and having his coffin laid in the state capital building. 10,000 people attended his funeral and at it they celebrated his life, and everything he did. The clips in this video of people celebrating and partying are from his funeral where his ashes were scattered in the pacific ocean.
