lol the random guy at 12:16 was maynard. you also talked about drummers wearing headphone when playing. a lot of bands live play to a track so yes they wear headphones. whats cool about tool is that while their music is much harder to keep synchronized together they dont use headphone or backing tracks at all. they're just on stage jamming and playing together as one unit. thats why a lot of the times in difficult sections youll see justin and adam turn to danny and they will all be making eye contact to make sure that they are staying together and that the song wont fall apart.
@JohnEDepth752
@JohnEDepth752 4 жыл бұрын
When we wear headphones, we aren't playing to a track, we're getting a direct feed of the other instruments on the stage to our ears. Music is different on stage than what the crowd hears. Honestly, it's barely audible. As a matter of fact, you can see the monitor pack attached to the back of his shorts, so he's using in ear monitors.

Still good to see newcomers to Tool. Kinda comes with the build up, and then release of everything coming with this newest album. Us Tool fans where just saying to ourselves, "you don't know, you don't know wtf is about to hit." They said eff it, and finally released the entire old catalog to take over on streaming services, and we were like, "release the Kraken!" We watched Taylor Swift fans crying about not even knowing who Tool was as they crush her newest release. I applaud anyone for seeing the light, no matter how recently. You're going to get effed up comments from Tool fans now and then because, owning up to it, we can be pricks about Tool. These guys are at the forefront of just about all they do though. Seriously, just enjoy.

Love the fact that you went into this live video however, you need to properly react to Pneuma by listening to all aspects, this live performance is much more appreciated once you listen to the track first because you get distracted by Danny’s greatness, so I would recommend reacting to the track next, immerse yourself into trying to listen to all detail, also if you pause the video, rewind 10-15 seconds to not miss the build ups, can’t tell you how much I was pulling my hairs when you paused a few times just before the epic transitions of the song... we Tool fans take notice of this details and can be very critical and unforgiving. Also, if you go off course talking about other bands than just Tool, pause the song rather than talk over it because again, you are missing out on the details. Guy walking behind is Maynard, there are 2 platforms on this tour he transitions from left to right and also, the electronic sound you hear midway is a keyboard and not a guitar. All in all, towards the end you guys did a great job, keep it up, and at this rate keep doing all the songs from their new Album, DESCENDING should be next but not before you do Pneuma’s track justice again.

Tool and Danny (drummer) are from Los Angeles. Danny is a huge NBA fan and tries to get jerseys for the local team from the venue/team wherever they play. He's actually in his 50s and one of the coolest, most humble guys in the business. And probably the greatest rock drummer ever. The "logo drums" are actually pads that each have 12 assignable zones. He has profiles built for every song with all the background sounds for the songs and plays them on the pads in real time live. It's actually unbelievable to watch. If you can find live footage of him playing "Eulogy" you will see it all worked together. It's amazing.

Hi guys! So glad to watch your progressions of reacting to TooL for the first time into THIS IS THE GREATEST BAND EVER! I've been a TooL fan since hs & am now a 36 yr old mom who sees them or Maynard (A Perfect Circle/Puscifer) any chance I get. For sure, as to how they compose their music- Adam Jones (guitar) & Justin Chancellor (bass) create something, give it to Danny he writes his part, the 3 of them come back together & tweak it all out & send Maynard the final product. Maynard then writes to that. This was said by Maynard & Danny separately in various interviews. I think that's why each instrument in every song sounds so polished & clean even though they give you chaos with time signature changes- which is intentional & gives them that tribal feel. They each had time to nail down & alter what they want to make this cohesive vs 4 dudes in a studio for a month scrambling to make their ideas work & throwing it out there sounding like shit. Anyway, stoked you guys are into my favorite band of all time. I'd really like to see you guys react to Third Eye off Lateralus...you should also do some A Perfect Circle. Judith would be great to start- that is about Maynard's mom who was paralyzed when he was young. His best selling wine at his winery is his Judith blend.

Most of the songs off the new album, Fear Inoculum, are light on lyrics. It's partially because they're all over 10 minutes long. Also regarding him flipping drumsticks, it's not just for show. You get a different sound out of the drums if you use different ends of the sticks, and in different ways. Danny Carey has a solo in their concerts where he plays on a giant gong where he showcases what striking differently with different types of mallets can do.

The observation about the vocals is exactly what Tool was going for with this album. Maynard has said that he considers himself an instrument in the band, not the leader. That is the reason the stage is setup the way it is. For this tour they had a platform on each side of the stage and a walkway behind the drums and Maynard walks back and forth between them, but behind the rest of the band.

First, a disclaimer: if I offend anyone, I apologize. I'm coming from a place of ignorance; not spite, condescension or animosity. Second, full disclosure: I'm OGT. That means biased. It seems that one of the most significant "challenges" for lifelong fans of rap/hip-hop to overcome when stepping into something like TooL is the complexity and texture of lyrics. (Boy if THAT doesn't scream "typical pretentious TooL fan") Let's face it, it seems (to an outsider like me) that most of the music behind rap is simply there to provide cohesive ambiance. The "real" music is of course the performance of the lyricist. Here is where the talent pool seems to divide by orders of magnitude- some of the lyrics (if not all in some cases) are not as important as the way in which they flow together. This gives a rap song "meaningless" aspects. Which, to the initiated, is totally not the point. The wordcraft and "music" produced by the human voice is really the focus, in these cases. There are exceptions, Kendrick Lamar comes to mind. He's serving up steak, not empty calories. But, with so much "flavor of the club of the month" braggadocio and dis-tracks, I would hazard to guess that gleaning metaphors from lyrics sticks to a predictable range of topics. Which, the TooL Army will quickly point out, will leave you ill-prepared for the myriad concepts TooL explores. The most accessible song that translates willingly might be Hooker With A Penis. Straightforward, "you're this, and I'm this, and you act like this, and I'm here to set you straight." Contrast this song with The Pot. Still a straightforward track within the TooL catalogue, but let someone listen to it for the first time and ask them "what was that song about?" I'm not saying none of them will get it... I'm saying none of them will get 46&2. TooL's subject matter, specifically, and the way it's presented, specifically, are not universally explored by people. Lateralus... speaking of which. The guy on the right, on this channel, mentioned it in a video (think it was for The Grudge) and brought up the Fibonachi Sequence (naturally). Then, explaining a bit about it, says "fractal..."- that's the moment I scrolled up and clicked "subscribe. My whole point, the TLDR, is that music for entertainment is fine. Listening to TooL just to groove or workout is fine. But unless you're somewhat versed in peeling back layers within lyrics and song structures already, stuff like TooL can have you feeling kinda lost. Or blissfully oblivious. I suppose that oddly poetic in itself. ⚫🍥

You're very right about the nature of the vocals in rap. The vocalist is essentially a rhythmic instrument, and the lyrics the different tones they play. This allows the vocalist to dictate the form of the song to a great degree. This works in that genre because the music serves little purpose than to accent the words and provide a memorable hook. But with a band like Tool, the vocals/lyrics are a melodic instrument, and while the words themselves have deep meaning, the way they're structured is entirely subservient to the music itself. This is different from many other instrument-based bands, where the lyrics and vocal line are presented as the primary focus of the song. With Tool, the vocals are equal in importance to the rest of the parts.

So happy you guys got to see that so you can appreciate Danny Carey. He's amazing! Just think that many of the songs they perform are between 9 and 15 min long each. Now that's one hell of a workout by the end of the night. Make sure you take time to listen to the studio version of this. You're missing a lot of small details you can't hear in the live version. If you love "this version" of Tool then I suggest staying on the Fear Inoculum album. Start with the first song and go through all of them. Fear Inoculum should be next. I say "this version" of Tool because each of their albums sound slightly different. Great reaction guys!
