What I absolutely loved about Portnoy's cover is that he didn't have the kit (or time lol) to really recreate what Danny did during the whole breakdown / bridge phase, but he came up with something that was both close and made it his own. And maybe in some context someone could read that as a bit of a slight, but it's nothing short of incredible what he did in just a few hours.

This video of Danny playing Pneuma is the most wonderful performance by a live drummer I have ever seen. I lost count of how many times I watched it. Portnoy did a great job, but the way Danny plays that song is on another level.
@Titanium_Cranium
@Titanium_Cranium 2 ай бұрын
Pneuma has a strange time signature that once Mike thought he'd found the sequence he had a lot more success, treating it as combinations of bars of 6's & 5's but the order of the bar counts over the length of the piece evolves as it continues, hence we have one of the hardest drum tracks to replicate, but in the time he had, Mike killed it. Danny's complete version of course is simply mindblowing.

I mean it's important to keep in mind that carey wrote this awesome track and that portnoy was put on the line to cover it. Portnoy did an excellent job in covering it in short time, adding his own style and experience! I am looking foward to his perfomes back in DT!

I haven't learned this song but for what I understood, the main riff is 33/8 (hence the 33 on his jersey) split in measures of 6/8 and 5/8. The whole song plays with sections of 3 and polyrhythms in 3. Portnoy had to record it in parts because he couldn't do it in one take. That's how complicated this song is. He did an amazing job.

I thought it was odd that he didn't attempt the hi hat pattern in the verses. Especially after seeing the vid of Danny playing it.

It's crazy watching all The drummers be amazed at others talent and not realize how talented they truly are themselves. Samus's performance on drumeo for led zeppelin was amazing and when it comes to hitting all the areas, it's probably the best first run I have seen on there Channel.

I absolutely LOVED watching Mike’s take on this masterpiece, and loved your reaction! I’m so happy that we are seeing more of these drum cam videos like the one of Danny. When we watch a band live onstage we rarely get to see what exactly the drummers are doing (even though we absolutely feel it!) and it’s wild to see how much tireless work, sweat, and effort goes into what they do. Incredible! 🙌🏻🤘🏻🥁 New sub here!

I mean to be fair Portnoy had a day with this song. Danny wrote it probably over months, refined it and also drew from decades of playing this feel he pioneered in Tool.

This original video blew my mind. There is no debating that Mike is a fucking LEGEND, but if I’m not mistaken I think it took him 5 hours altogether and the final performance was done in segments due to the complexity and duration of the song. That’s insane!

I always felt bad for the drummer of Tool (Danny) , since the first song they ever dropped to today, his job has got to be pure torture. The drums are what got me into the band, Neverending god tier creativity and skill. A true master of his craft. Portnoy did an amazing job here, must've been excruciatingly painful and taxing on the brain.

Also I’d love to see Samus take a run at this song! I know it’s no easy task with the time signatures in this song, but I feel like you could nail this song too man! Keep up the great work Samus! Portnoy is Portnoy, right, but Danny Carey has a unique way to play the drums of this song. Those strokes between the cymbals and drums and the crescendo, the impact is almost like an logarythmic function, every beat has an ease to it, a modulation, that is much more pronounced in the later's way of playing.

I love what Mike did there. He’s a monster and it’s nothing short of incredible. And I find it so amazing that he’s down to having the whole struggle filmed. Also when comparing the thing is that Danny plays the song differently than it’s on the album. The 4 on the floor on the Hi Hat for example.

When you said "time signature, 22 over 37" I chuckled hard, cause it's actually in 22, 11 11 and the groups are 6 and 5. It took me a while to figure it out. Shit's an equation more than a song.
