I love Rage!! They’re not nu-metal…they are their own thing. They were POWER. In the spirit of Hip Hop, Zack is very much a rapper, it’s just a different style with the band behind him. Y’all have to remember that this was 1993. Before cell phones and internet took hold. Tim (bass) and Brad (drums) are sometimes overlooked because of Tom Morello’s unique guitar sound. Rage wasn’t played on the radio much, if at all, because they made songs about historical facts, corrupt governmental practices, racism and social injustices and inequalities - topics that radio didn’t want to touch. Remember that this performance was a few months after Rodney King/LA riots. Rage in the 90s was a voice for the people. They were activists. I think their message doesn’t resonate as strongly with those who weren’t there to be a part of it/see it. But their music is as relevant in 2023 as it was in 1993. I feel like you guys are focusing on whether or not Zack fits in today’s definition of a rapper. This band doesn’t fit in any box. Rage was so much more than that!! Take a look at the energy from this crowd - it says it all. Guys, please look into what this band was really about back then. And his Zack’s last name is pronounced de la roach-a. Zack collaborated with Run the Jewelz fairly recently. So if his rap is what you’re most interested with, then check that out. Peace out

Ya to me the bass and drums really drive the band. And the fact that they were as tight as a nun's _____.

I think it was 2008 or 2009 Rage headlined the Big Day Out festival in Melbourne Australia alongside Neil Young. Some genius decided to schedule both acts to play at the same time slot on different stages to close the show out. I lived about 2 miles from the racecourse grounds where the festival was and whilst outside having a dart caught the sound travelling on a swirling breeze of both artists final songs simultaneously. One would come through clearer than the other then it would change the opposite way. I literally heard and I kid you not "Killing in the name of... young man look at my life......Arrrgh!! ". I spat my smoke out laughing so hard. For the record I saw GnR in their hayday,1993 Calder Park Australia with Skid Row and Rose Tattoo in support. Was Epic. Zac takes the points though. Based purely on lyrical significance. Stick it to the man beats stick it to the bitches. Much love fellas, great debate

The original lyric was “ some of those that hold office” the record company said NO WAY. So they changed it to “some of those that work forces” Even the mighty Rage had to bend a little. Back in the day you HAD to have a label to get your stuff heard, there were no other platforms.

Here is my take on the Zack/ Axl situation. I don’t know the parameters to which each frontman is being held. I heard the one guy talking about the one body of work vs the other……? Or are we talking showmanship and stage presence? IDK, but my vote goes to Zack, and here’s why. I was in high school when Guns dropped and believe me it was HUGE!!!!! They were like a hair band but a gritty and dirty hairband, not glam at all. I was in college when Rage dropped and it was mind blowing….. not only the rap/rock combo but the brutality honest social commentary was so in your face. Now I’m obviously old and can look back on both bands with the eyes of someone who lived it, and I gotta say that Rage was more groundbreaking and I feel that their music is still relevant today. When you listen it doesn’t sound dated, in sound or subject matter. I love Guns, but their sound, style and some of the subject matter hasn’t aged well. I’m sure I’ll get all kinds of hate, but that’s my take, IMHO.

Appreciation for Morello as a great guitarist will continue to grow, as musical sensibilities shift. Some people get hung up on all the effect pedals and everything, but they don't disqualify every guitarist who uses distortion, feedback, a whammy bar, etc., so they're just drawing an arbitrary line, when it comes to effects. When there's a higher value placed on originality and experimentation, Morello will get his due.
