"Rock the Casbah" was probably the biggest hit for The Clash, but they had tons of great songs. You already heard about "London Calling" and "Should I Stay or Should I Go?", but the are others like "Radio Clash" and, on a softer note, "Lost In The Supermarket". They were originally a Punk band, but evolved onto more of a Reggae/Rock band. IMVHO.

@@ronaldmilner8932 I was born in 68, so I had the luxury of growing up listening to all of the best stuff right out the gate. My mom listened to Bob Seger, Janis Joplin, George Benson and others. My dad listened to Journey, CSNY, Boz Skaggs, old school country. So I grew up with VERY diverse tastes in music.

The whole political thing predates punk. I mean have you ever heard War by Edwin Starr???? And that was hardly the first. And that Rolling Stone album list had Prince's Dirty Mind at #2. (Note: Dirty Mind was not Prince's best album at the time.)

The song gives a fabulist account of a ban on Western rock music by a Middle Eastern king. The lyrics describe the king's efforts to enforce and justify the ban, and the populace's protests against it by holding rock concerts in temples and squares ("rocking the casbah"). This culminates in the king ordering his military's fighter jets to bomb the protestors; however, after taking off, the pilots ignore his orders and instead play rock music on their cockpit radios, joining the protest and implying the loss of the king's power. The events depicted in the song are similar to an actual ban on Western music, including rock music, enforced in Iran since the Iranian Revolution. Though classical music and public concerts were briefly permitted in the 1980s and 1990s, the ban was reinstated in 2005, and has remained in force ever since. Western music is still distributed in Iran through black markets, and Iranian rock music artists are forced to record in secret, under threat of arrest. LYRICS Now the King told the boogie man You have to let that raga drop The oil down the desert way Has been shakin' to the top The Sheik, he drove his Cadillac He went a-cruisin' down the ville The muezzin was a-standin' On the radiator grille (ow!) Sharif don't like it Rockin' the Casbah Rock the Casbah Sharif don't like it Rockin' the Casbah Rock the Casbah By order of the Prophet We ban that boogie sound Degenerate the faithful With that crazy Casbah sound But the Bedouin, they brought out The electric camel drum The local guitar picker Got his guitar-pickin' thumb As soon as the Sharif had cleared the square They began to wail Sharif don't like it Rockin' the Casbah Rock the Casbah Sharif don't like it Rockin' the Casbah Rock the Casbah Now over at the temple Oh, they really pack 'em in The in-crowd say it's cool To dig this chanting thing But as the wind changed direction And the temple band took fire The crowd caught a whiff Of that crazy Casbah jive Sharif don't like it Rockin' the Casbah Rock the Casbah Sharif don't like it Rockin' the Casbah Rock the Casbah The King called up his jet fighters He said you better earn your pay Drop your bombs between the Minarets Down the Casbah way As soon as the Sharif was chauffeured outta there The jet pilots tuned to the cockpit radio blare As soon as the Sharif was outta their hair The jet pilots wailed Sharif don't like it Rockin' the Casbah Rock the Casbah Sharif don't like it Rockin' the Casbah Rock the Casbah Sharif don't like it He thinks it's not kosher Rockin' the Casbah Rock the Casbah Sharif don't like it Fundamentally can't take it Rockin' the Casbah Rock the Casbah Sharif don't like it You know he really hates it Rockin' the Casbah Rock the Casbah Sharif don't like it

A lot of this of this was filmed here in Austin Texas in the summer of 1982. When they filmed this, I lived across Highway 71 of Bergstrom Air Force Base where the 2 RF-4 Phantoms fly over at the time (11:39 11:55 and 11:47 on this reaction) Today its now Austin-Bergstrom International Airport . Compared to now, Austin was such a small town.... Time flies. Today I live about 10 miles south of the spot they did the jet parts of this video..

This is a political song inspired by the hard-line Iranian revolution. The Clash were punk, but originally with a reggae feel and later - like this one - a dancier, poppier sound. Anything off their "London Calling" album is worth a listen, especially "Rudie Can't Fail", "Death or Glory", and the title track. Other than that, "Should I Stay or Should I Go" is a classic, and the dubbier "Bank Robber" is also great.

The Clash was one of the seminal punk bands of the late 70's, very hardcore. When this song came out, they were derided for "selling out" and "going disco" because the song was a dance song, which is just not a thing in punk rock. But it was very successful, so the band laughed all the way to the bank. They never did go this pop again, though.

The song was written and most of the instruments put down by Topper Headon, the band's drummer, with Joe Strummer putting lyrics to it. Topper was then sacked due to his heroin addiction (The Clash were vocally anti-drugs) which is why the drummer in the video is his replacement, Terry Chimes.

disco influenced a lot of 80’s bands, especially in England. some of the funkiest bass players came out of england at that time having been kids listening to all the great funk bass players of the 70’s…. Larry Graham, bootsy collins, brothers johnson, the list goes on. so that’s why you here disco.

Disco dominated the period between 1975-1980. That's why elements of it were still in use in 1982. It was the best new genre of music of the 1970s and its popularity both then and now proves that. Only white trash objected to it, and only because they couldn't dance and were racist POS.

Written by Topper Headon, Mick Jones and the late Joe Strummer. The song was supposed to be written by Topper Headon. He played the guitars 🎸, bass guitar 🎸, piano 🎹 and drums 🥁, his instrument in concerts. But Strummer hated the lyrics 🤮. He replaced them with his. Mick Jones, who is dofferent than his namesake in Foreigner, added his guitar 🎸 part and the sound effects. Thus, he gets writing ✍ credit. The UK 🇬🇧 had punk band The Sex Pistols. 1 album and that was it! 🤯 The Clash lasted longer! 🤯 London Calling was a big hit. Then, Rock the Casbah came! 🤯 Elvis Costello, Bruce Springsteen and Dave Grohl had a great tribute at the Grammys for the late Joe Strummer.

This is actually a commentary on the situation of the Middle East and the U.S.’s involvement with it. The Cadillac is representing the U.S. in that Israeli is manipulating the U.S. in the video by having the Jewish guy driving. It also is representing the U.S. in the size and consumption of gasoline and oil by indicating that it is too large wasteful. The representation of the Arabic man is that he’s not concerned with the cost of his actions and is glad to fill up the Cadillac while someone else is paying for it. This is to mean that while the rest of us are paying for the oil from the Middle East, they are not concerned about the economic conditions of the rest of the world . The use of the characters and the Cadillac are all representative of the situation between the U.S. and the Middle East in that the U.S. is a over sized luxury automobile that wastes gas and is easily manipulated by the Middle East and Israeli paying for it.
