Cab Calloway was a famous jazz singer from the 1940s (see him in the movie The Blues Brothers) he and "Scat man" Caruthers, were known for "SCATTING" which is vocal improv, using the voice mostly as a rhythm instrument. Rap gets a lot of it's song structure from Big Band Music.
@QualeQualeson6 күн бұрын
Not throwing shade, but Cab Calloway and that big band song and dance scene was on a completely different level from what we know now. They had a very different view on what a show and a night out should be back then, and I dare say that it was a much more tempting proposition. I'd sacrifice every concert I've ever been to just to see it once.

One of those bands who's timing couldn't have been any more perfect. MTV and VH1 owe just as much to these guys as the Beasties owe them for the meteoric rise that they all rode on. Absolutely perfect timing for the music and the cable TV worlds to collide. Arguably, the 80's decade was music's best for variety and popularity. It birthed a plethora of different bands and genres (Lord, how I hate that word) that came out of the commercial, bar, and underground scenes. No internet, vinyl was king, bootleg LP's and cassettes were handed out at the bar's front door after one paid the cover charge, and everybody knew the "Top 100" charts by heart just like a prepubecent kid spewing each and every statistic printed on the back of all the baseball cards Topps had. One could catch a live show in their hometown or within driving distance at least twice a week from the bands that were on tour...even if they lived in little "Po-dunk USA" it was a tour stop. I miss it. Apologies to all those who made it this far for the ratchet-jawing tangent I was just on. Kinda got lost in the sauce.

This may be a very loose interpretation of "freestyle" in rock, but there are quite a few to throw in bits from other songs in extended live versions of songs. Chris Cornell started singing parts of "Alive" by Pearl Jam and "Jesus is Just Alright" by the Doobie Brothers in an extended bridge of the Soundgarden song "Slaves and Bulldozers". Adam Duritz did a phenomenal spoken word like performance during a live version of "Round Here" by Counting Crows. Michael Stipe would start songs with poems and lyrics he liked from other bands before launching into R.E.M. songs in concerts.

The word "ill" influenced hip-hop greatly. It can be traced back as far as the 70s, when block parties would gather and folks would compete to have the best rhymes. Incredible performances would often lead to people siting down, mimicking some kind of exasperated sickness from the power of the words. All in good fun. This of course led to talk of "rhymes that will make you ill," then the rhymes themselves becoming ill and spreading that to the audience. It became a good thing. Like "bad" or "sick.

Fun Fact: The group used a karaoke microphone to distort their vocals. At the time, most elite rappers had big, powerful voices that might get some reverb, but never distortion. Beastie Boys were in a different, higher vocal range, so this effect suited them well. Years later, another vocal effect became the in-thing in rap: Auto-Tune. -This Song Was In The Rhythm Game Rock Band 2.

If I recall the story correctly, American Woman by The Guess Who was more or less freestyle at a show and they had to find someone that had recorded it to go back and learn it for real. I think in blues, into the electric era, and further on to rock there's some amount of freestyle vocals but more spots and fills than more full verses and tracks like hip hop. Much more common that the instruments would jam together and create music in the moment and off one another.

Rick Rubin had nothing to do with this album. He produced their first record, and then they had a falling out. The Beastie Boys moved to L.A., signed with a different record label, and found a new sound with the help of the Dust Brothers. After the commercial failure of Paul's Boutique, the Beastie Boys had the freedom to make whatever music they wanted, so they built their own studio and picked up their instruments again and changed their sound for the third time. This song comes from Check Your Head, their third album and first to be made in their own studio (G-Son in L.A.) with the addition of a keyboard player and a percussionist. In my opinion, this is when they really hit their stride artistically. A lot of the best Beastie Boys stuff comes from the Check Your Head - Ill Communication - Hello Nasty era.

Speaking of their punk rock days... there is a beat so slamming fast on their early recordings, that it is widely considered to be one of the first blast Beats
@jessellis54666 күн бұрын
Hard no. That title belongs to Buddy Rich
@MARSHOMEWORLD6 күн бұрын
@jessellis5466 well, admittedly Buddy was a beast, but he wasn't any further along than Louie bellson who is rocking that single stroke crazy sauce and drum solos at the same time. Actually I would imagine the traditional grip version of what could be considered a blast beat is actually rooted in military Cadence or Drumline technicality as opposed to outright jazz. And the first dude I can think of to actually incorporate that speed into a song not just as a solo unaccompanied would be Tony williams. But getting back to the point at hand in terms of a recorded work that has a tangible and traceable date chronologically..... in terms of using that beat in a song structure..... again, not just as a solo.... I still vote in the direction of the Beastie boys. There'll be some people who need to win at internet's that will bring up Napalm death, or terroriser which are totally valid I mean those are all embryonic in the same sort of way but spin that early beasties demo and tell me that that shit doesn't sound like a traditional fully formed blast beat
