A lot of the comments talk about early glam bands being the beginning of this genre, and while it’s true that Slade, the Sweet, T. Rex, New York Dolls, and others were huge influences, they were glam, not hair metal. You also have Alice Cooper and Kiss as huge influences, but that wasn’t quite hair metal yet. In my opinion, it was Quiet Riot that put out the first real hair metal album and pulled all of those influences into the next phase of the sound.

Motley Crue is my favorite hard rock/hair band. I've been listening to them since 1983 when I saw them at the US Festival. You might want to check out their bio-movie The Dirt about their early days on Netflix. As far as songs go: Live Wire (Off their debut album) is from their earliest beginings and then Saints Of Los Angeles the title tract of their last album (2008). For some real rabbit hole trippings, try Hooligans Holiday from the one album they made WITHOUT Vince. As for Tommy, he was not the star but he got a lot of mainstream press because he was married to Heather Locklear and Pamela Anderson. Hell, he even had a reality TV show about him going to college.
