It was because of Tarja's rich dark classical vocals that Nightwish came to define the genre of symphonic metal. Most of the songs you have heard Floor sing were either written for Tarja or Anette. "Ghost Love Score" was recorded and performed by Tarja. You should do a deep dive into the origin of this band. There are so many great live performances starting with the "From Wishes to Eternity" concert from 2000 where you see the original line-up

Nightwish fans are the 'Nightwish Army'. Singers in Nightwish, 3 ladies sang lead, Tarja, Anette , and Floor. Marko, during his tenure, and Troy sing. Tuomas sang on a few songs , in studio, on the 1st album in 1997, he said he wasn't good enough and they used guests for male vocals until Marko joined in 2001. Close guys, Tuomas wrote it out of anger and frustration. He was at a bar, with his then girlfriend, and all the guys there kept hitting on her. Even those that knew they were dating. Smokey is correct, song is from 2004, on the 5th album, Once, the last with Tarja. The song has the distinction of being the last song Tarja sang with Nightwish. It was the set closer at the 2005 Helsinki concert(End of an Era DVD). Every song at the Wacken 2013 concert was recorded with either Tarja or Anette, Floor joined the band in the middle of that tour.

Thank you! Wish I Had an Angel indeed is a big hit from Nightwish. It was a big radio hit too. Many of the Nightwish hits are originally sang by Tarja. But think there is a simple reason for it: Tarja has done the most albums with Nightwish. With Floor they have done 3, with Anette 2 (plus Eps) and with Tarja 5 (plus Eps). I think the biggest Tarja radio hit is Nemo... in general it's still one of the biggest hits from Nightwish. Still today, Tarja too, sings it occasionally in her solo concerts. Talking about Tarja's solo concerts. She has a long solo career as well. This year Tarja toured with Marko (the bassist and singer here). They have fixed their friendship and it's actually stronger than ever. They sang Wish I Had an Angel (among other NW hits and other duets which included their new duet Left on Mars which Marko wrote) together on these tours. Next year their tour continues.

The reason why Tarja and Nightwish parted ways was not because they wanted different musical directions. In an interview in 2002, Tarja said that she never wanted to interfere with Tuomas's songwriting. She only arranged some vocal lines and choir parts. The reasons for their split were more personal. Everyone now admits that they handled things immaturely, were under great pressure due to rising fame, and were unable to communicate well with each other. Tarja said that she was never a member of the band in the common sense of the word, but she always gave the band her voice when they needed it and rehearsed together before tours. Tarja told the guys several years in advance that she wanted to pursue a solo career, but in the end, the breakup was handled very poorly by the band and it still divides the fans to this day. A few years ago, Marko apologized to Tarja, and now they collaborate and tour together. They have a great relationship. The hit song for Nightwish on the radio was Nemo from the album Once (2004). It was the fifth and last album that Tarja recorded with them. At that time, they gained international acclaim.

Songs like this and others lead to rumors that Toumas always thought he and Tarja would be together. But she had a boyfriend and then husband.. that divided allegiance lead to the break up. She did not see it that way. But you have to wonder if Toumas elevated those divisions because of his personal feelings.

Tarja and Marcello are still happily married with a daughter Naomi who inherited the musical genes from her mother's side of the family. Tarja's baby brother Toni also sings. Yes even with Tarja as part of a group of back up singers or as duet on an album or 3.

Each singer has brought something different to the Nightwish table. Tarja is the OG and for many fans remains their favorite. I admit I find her operatic style on a whole different level than even Floor's (which is still amazing in its own right), however Floor is still my favorite due to her ability to change and adapt between many vocal styles. But again, all of them are talented in their own ways.

Marko was a lead singer in his previous bands. He is now singing in his own band as well as doing collabs with other artists. In the early days they were more of a power metal band. Tuomas was the one who chose to bring in the more symphonic elements. Tarja was definitely the more operatic vocalist.

First massive hit was Wishmaster from the album with the same name. Original bassist left over Nightwish not wanting to continue mass producing that type of songs. Any arrival or departure, other than the drummer (health issues), had something to do with either Tuomas or their label.

TARJA MY LOVE LET’S GOOOOOO you guys definitely need to check out Anette, especially anything from her second album Imaginareum. “Rest Calm,” “The Crow, The Owl, and The Dove,” “Turn Loose the Mermaids” are all really great showcases of her voice. Odin (aka Marco) did, in fact, have a hand in Tarja’s dismissal. However, the two have actually made up in the past few years and are actually on tour together! They released a new original song as well called “Left On Mars” that’s a banger.

The singers divide the audience quite well. For me, the division comes with the album Dark Passion Play: after that album, the band hasn’t been heavy in my opinion. I miss music like The Pharaoh Sails to Orion and Nemo. Not what is currently offered. If you want to hear old radio hits: Nemo, Wishmaster, Ever Dream, Dark Chest Of Wonders, Planet Hell. It’s worth delving into the albums from 1998 (Oceanborn) to Once (2004) and the From Wishes To Eternity concert

Yeah. Cool. I've noticed that too. It's like they lost their Thrash element. It seems as though they became a bit of a Floor showcase band. I guess that you could argue, rightfully so due to Floor's awesomenesses, but it feels that the music was far richer before her. Like, I just did a side by side comparison with Floor's Live Ghost Love Score and Tarja's Studio Ghost Love Score and the music in Tarja's version just seemed richer. Kinda like how I bitched about Metallica's Load. For me, Yesterwynde is their Load. The only song that I liked from it is, The Day Of.... When it comes to the vocals, it's that I miss Marko as a masculine belter. Troy has a natural falsetto. How will he be able to do Wish I Had an Angel or High Hopes? Love your reactions my friends. Nightwish is that rare band that in my opinion has never made a mis- step in membership. All of the singers have been wonderful in their own ways. Their biggest commercial success to this point has been with Annette and I think she is often short changed when people decide to compare vocalists. Nightwish is not what they are without the contributions from all of their members so I think we should just enjoy them for what they are. All that being said, as far as the total package goes, for me Floor is the best frontperson in the world. Happy holidays from the Nightwish Army Denver division!

I saw Nightwish live for the first time in 1998. With Tarja ❤ of course. I kind of grew up with them, so Tarja is pretty awesome imho 😁 and her solo career is amazing too. I'm soooo happy to see Tarja and Marko live together next summer. That said, I pretty much always go for the current singer (it was difficult with Anette, bc her live performances weren't too good) But I'm totally for Floor. Marco or Odin as you call him has his own band called Tarot where he is the lead singer. Since leaving Nightwish in either 2019 or 20 Marco has worked or done projects with many others including doing a tour with Tarja. I don't know all the issues. Some of this may be speculation, hearsay or fact. Problems started with Tarja after she got married. Her husband was also/had been her manager. She started acting like a diva. She essentially told Tuomas (founder, keyboard player, song writer) that all the band's success was because of her and that if she left the band would fall apart. She had told the band she was going to record 1 more album with them but after that she was leaving for her own solo career. There were other issues but that gives you an idea. The other band members voted unanimously to fire her. After the final performance of their world tour in 04 or 05 they handed her a letter explaining why she was being let go. The next day they published the letter on line. Y'all should check that out. On the next album the first of two with Annette called Dark Passion Play there are three songs that address Tarja's departure. "Bye Bye Beautiful" is written to Tarja. "Master, Passion, Greed" is written to her husband. "The Poet and the Pendulum" is the emotional journey Tuomas went through following. Many or most of the fans had attacked Tuomas personally, blaming him for everything that happened with Tarja.

No one knows what actually went down except those involved. Remember, there are always 2 sides to every story and somewhere in the middle is the truth. I do know that Tarja met her Husband because while the band was performing a fan got onstage and attacked her, the band did nothing to help her, it was her now Husband who came to her rescue and stayed with her after that. The way that they fired her was horrible and very disrespectful, but it was a long time ago and everyone has moved on. I am delighted that Tarja and Marko have reconnected and they are having fun performing together.

Anette and Floor are great singers in their own right but the Tarja era will always be my favourite. My favourite song though? "Beauty and the Beast" from their first album. As an organ player, I have a lot of respect for keyboard players (Benny Andersson is a hero of mine) and Tuomas' keyboard is on point in many songs. Other great songs are Wanderlust and Slaying the Dreamer. I hope you get to some of these sometime.

Tarja stands in the middle of the stage and you felt she is everywhere at once. Anette runs and jump saround but you cant see a singer. Floor is the middle between. If you haven't already, you really need to listen to their live version of Phantom of the Opera w/ Tarja. This song isn't one of Tarja's best features - but it definitely shows more of the whole band. Marko is fantastic, and it's great when he sings.

If you're looking for Tarja Nightwish stuff, you can't get around their album "Once". So many great songs and I could hardly list favourites without just going through every entry in the album. Though if pressed on the matter, Nemo and Ghost Love Score easily among the better known and I beleive both of you have listened to Floor singing those songs. Checking them out with Tarja might be an interesting comparision for you, if you need an excuse to listen to more Nightwish in the first place. Though I also like The Siren and Dead Gardens quite a lot. Then there's the other classic albums like "Wishmaster" and "Century Child", the latter which you've already heard a song from with that being the superb cover of Phantom of the Opera.

Classic Taja Nightwish-Pharoah sails to orion live. Gothic symphonic metal, Beauty and the Beast is another good classic Taja song. Floor was way better in her other bands which I followed,now it's just Nightwish with Floor. Annette was good depending on the song, she is an excellent vocalist that has a different style to both Floor and Taja being more trad metal ( old metalhead from the 80s here 🤘🤘) focused,she can do some of the catalogue and some songs written for Taja take on a different impression. All vocalists are great BUT the Floor era is written by the numbers metal, it doesn't change and you can expect pretty much the same formula every song, except for the songs written for Annette and Taja. Just my opinion. I don't listen to new Nightwish and only have listened to Floors first appearance on an album, needless to say I wasn't impressed much.

I was so p*ssed by not only the fact they got rid of Tarja but the WAY they did it I completely stopped listening to them. The only songs from them that I purchased & stream are the Tarja era. Her voice is so powerful & intrinsic to Nightwish that many of us fans to this day consider her irreplaceable & Nightwish is nothing without her. Sure, it's a small thing, but if enough fans all at once stop streaming an artists music, stop paying their hard earned $ for concert tickets & most importantly, stick to it, this all sends a clear message to the artists & label. Why did I walk after they got rid of Tarja? On principle. When it comes right down to it, she was kicked out because a fragile male ego couldn't handle the fact that most fans flocked to her. At meet & greets it was obvious who even we female fans paid to meet & he wasn't it. If you can still find footage of those, watch him. Even in the times he tries to control his expression, his eyes give him away every time he looks in Tarja's direction. It was a Narcissistic Injury a man with a self inflated ego couldn't handle. It really is simple as that. No matter how he styles himself, no man who exhibits those traits deserves to be called The All Father's name, even in jest. Funny side story; I played KZbin videos in delivery room. When my nurse told me these rooms were sound proofed I cranked it up. Our beautiful daughter entered this world to during the chorus for "Over The Hills & Far Away".

In lots of European languages ''J'' is pronounces as ''Y'', so Tarja is actually Tarya. Just a heads up.. This is Nightwish at its peak IMO.

Floor is an amazing singer; but Tarja is the best. Floor doesn’t have the range that Tarja has 😊

Floor may not be as good at operatic style singing as Tarja having less training in that style (though she's still very good), but she has way more versatility of styles, colors, and emotions in her singing than Tarja. The styles are very different though so I don't like to compare them. For my tastes there are a couple of songs where I like Tarja a bit better since that operatic style suits the song better, however for the majority of Nightwish songs I prefer all of the versatility that Floor brings. For purely operatic music I prefer Tarja though.

@ Yes to some extent. But I still prefer Tarja on songs like Ghost love score, and Nemo. Basically the entire Once album. As far as anything they did with Annette, I’m sure Floor is better

@@robertgrimstadjr7785 I think some of this may also have to do with which version you heard first (or more frequently) and so that version sounds the best or "right" to you since that becomes your baseline version. So for both Ghost Love Score and Nemo I do actually prefer Floor. I find that what Floor added to Ghost Love Score elevates that song and Nemo sounds better to me in a less operatic style. But I also heard Floor's versions first. But in contrast, for Sleeping Sun and Wishmaster, I actually prefer Tarja overall even though I heard Floor's version first. I think her operatic style suits those songs better (the "interesting" pronunciation in Wishmaster notwithstanding 😄).

Nightwish really lucked out with Tarja, Floor, Marko and Troy on vocals. Annette wasn't a bad signer, I loved her in "Turn Loose the Mermaids" but I don't think her vocals meshed well on most songs. To my ears Tarja sounded like a Siren. Her voice was pure, clear and distilled of emotion. Her voice was the most inhuman which suited many nightwish songs. Annette had a more witchy/folky sound that should have suited nightwish's more folky songs but for some reason nightwish had less folky songs with Annette. Floor's voice is almost the complete opposite to Tarja. Floor sounds like a Valkyrie. A mature woman full of emotion. She carries so much emotion goosebumps and tears are expected from anyone listening to her sing. There are Floor songs that I think Tarja might be a better fit and there are Tarja songs Floor does better. Not because one singer is better at singing but because one voice is better suited. But honestly, Troy is my favorite.😊

Annette was the weird one out of their singers. She was much too rock n roll and much too little operatic/symphonic. Did not really fit their style, even though she was a good singer and some of the songs written for her were really good, she wasn't able to perform the ones written for tarja to the audience expectations. Funny though, now - years after she left nightwish and founded her own band (the dark element) - she sounds (and looks) much more like the early Tarja than in her days with nightwish.
