I was really young, maybe around first grade, when this song came out. I had this ragged old stuffed animal beagle as long as I remember. Delilah DiCrescenzo, a very successful professional runner who just missed out on the 2012 Olympic Team, will be featured in the ESPN The Magazine’s February 18 music issue, in which she tells the story of how she ended up in the song for the umpteenth time: She was back home in Chicago while on break from school at Columbia University. She had a boyfriend at school, but met a guy at a party who was in this band called the Plain White T’s, and the musician told her he was going to write a song about her. A few months later, Tom Higgenson visited her house to drop off a CD. One of the tracks was called “Hey There Delilah.” She was flattered. Then the song got big. Real big. Nominated for a Grammy big. On February 8th, 2008, she attended the Grammys with the band. The song didn’t win, but she described the day as one of the best of her life. In years since, the song still follows her. And that’s okay. The song didn’t get Tom Higgenson the girl, she is still with the same boyfriend from college , but they’ve both enjoyed the ride.

not to ruin your comment but this song is based off of him and this girl dalilah (obviously but I forgot her last name) and the leader of the band met her at a party. He tried to woo her by saying he will write a song about her, she clearly stated she has a bf. He didn't care. He made the song about her and in an interview she stated that she felt like a wench because she thought she led him on (she didn't, he just didn't care and wanted her even though she has a bf) and even said that the song turned her life in a nightmare cause wherever she went it'd be playing, the pool, party, club, whatever.

I never even had the chance to approach her, not even once . You know what consumed me the most? The fact that I was barely having conversations with her and that I look ugly and so I thought it would be a real humiliation if she rejected me cuz then it would crush my self confidence and dignity and even friends would make fun of it.
