John Williams was an amazing writer and Butcher's Crossing is a great book. Check out the books "Stoner" and "Augustus" by the same author.

Struggling to find a UK release date for this. I'm crossing my fingers for the critical and monetary reception it needs. An adaption of such a stunning piece of Literary fiction must have come with serious challenges.

It may have premiered at the theater once in USA but I don’t think it was ever released after that. Let me know if you ever find it.

Amazing book but can we stop with this whole "enough with this John Wayne version of the west" crap. Anti-westerns have been the dominate western since the 60s. Its a staple today. It would honestly be more transgressive to make a John Wayne style western today.

Exactly. That line really turned me off. First, off some of those movies are great- and to pretend otherwise is just an exercise in willful pretentiousness. Second, like you said- it would be much more transgressive to make a throwback western than a revisionist/post modern western… I mean, the closest I can think of would be maybe the mag 7 remake… open range was maybe a hybrid of the of the two styles… Silverado, maybe- but even it was pretty tongue in cheek, so I’m not sure that really counts- and it’s like 30 years old now… meanwhile, I can rattle off “deconstructions” of the genre all day long…

Thank you and I'm not a massive John Wayne fan but it gets annoying with how people s@@t on his careers/movies. Like you said, the so-called anti-Western has been going on for over 50 years.

That’s a great point. These “post-modern” westerns are just Jewish producers attempting to destroy White culture and paint White pioneers as evil people. Native Americans hunted Buffalo to near extinction as much or more than White hunters did. Yet they ignore that and attempt to frame White people as being wholly responsible for the near extinction of Buffalo.
