I appreciate how you combine objective measurements and subjective listening in a single review. This makes the strengths and weaknesses of the reviewed product clearer, and also, over several reviews, starts to give one a sense of how measured differences affect subjective impressions. The Kitsune edition is the only Spring 3 with the Titanios 2 USB module, lesser modules have a lesser USB module, and thus might benefit from a DDC with galvanic isolation.

This was an immensely helpful review, as I'm currently trying to decide on my next DAC and definitely going in the direction of R2R. It's just that there are so many good choices, it's making my decision that much more difficult. The one thing about this review, however, (and it's the same thing I notice with many of these reviews and, for that matter, with the audio shows I've attended) is that the choice of music doesn't demonstrate what I want to hear. I'm principally a classical guy (though I listen to lots of other genres too), and this electronic/highly processed studio stuff IMO doesn't show off the component's ability to render a truly natural acoustic event like, say, opera, symphonic, or choral music. Still, the presentation makes a compelling and solid case for the Holo Spring 3, and it's firmly on my list.

Dear GoldenSound In the Holo Spring 3 review, did you ask, for our view on OS. I did purchase a Holo May DAC, also thanks to your review and I have NOT been disappointed, it is a SUPER GOOD DAC!!! On the Holo May DAC do I prefer NOS, way over its internal OS. 10 years ago did I build a DIY DAC with AD1955 chips and a advanced DSP up sampler. My DIY DAC did sound warmer and has a fuller midrange than a Bricasti M1 dac and a PS Audio DirectStream, else did all three sound similar. We tested them on a 150.000,- € setup, so they all did have a chance for showing them self from their best side. The Holo May DAC does sound more resolving and detailed in the midrange and more natural in general then my DIY DAC. Thank you for very good reviews :) Br Jacob Land

Just bought a SMSL VMV D1se, for my secondary, 2 channel system. I have a Topping D70s in my primary, headphone system. Comparing the two together, in my headphone system, with a Singxer SA-1 for the amp and a pair of Harmonicdyne Zeus and Focal Clear MG cans. the D1se is more incisive than the D70s and slightly less so than something like a D90. But I feel that the timbre on the D70s is slightly more natural than the D1se; however, the notes tend to be thicker/heavier on the D70s, as well as being slightly smoothed over. If the D1se is one of your favorite dacs under $1k, I would love to see your thoughts on the D70s. I think that you might like it just as much, if not maybe more than the D1se, seeing that to me, it sounds a touch closer to an R2R dac, while retaining the benefits of a delta sigma style dac. I was very surprised by the D70s and it remains my favorite dac to date.

We should not forget that there is a gentle but still quite present roll-off when you are using NOS with 44.1 material, starting well before 20k, due to the way NOS works. So there is a huge difference in how you appreciate the difference between an album in 44.1 NOS and the same album oversampled, compared to an album that is originally produced in 96kHz and the same album oversampled.
@FernandoPereira3 жыл бұрын

19:34 - 20:15 Totally resonates with me.. I have the modi multibit2 and denafrips ares II..Ares does resolution in a more airier manner..but the drums dont have that chesty thump on the ares2 that the multibit does so so well. They suit different genres differently - Ares2 + Sundara for classical, ambient, soundtracks, chillwave, jazz...Ares2 + Hd6xx - jazz, blues, vocals, acoustics, solo violins (anything tonal or timbre rich). But for rock, electro, deep house, EDM - mimby just sounds more 'fun'. And yes, there a few songs that can make you swell up within - 'Time' is one of them... Quick question - does limiting oversampling to a rate that tidal selects automatically in exclusive mode better than setting the OS in mac audio midi set up (Ares 2 shows upto 756Khz). Love to hear from you! Its nice to be nodding along with your reviews..straight, informed, honest, inclusive.. and the music..just Golden ;)

Are their sonic differences between various streamers connected to this DAC, considering its USB isolation and "absolutely non-existent jitter?" Is there anything other than jitter that will affect the sound from the digital data flow into the DAC? If not, does this DAC make all upstream digital components equal, soundwise? Is there any need for expensive streamers or USB cables? Could I just use my $35 Chromecast Audio or a $399 iFi STREAM device to get the same sound quality as an Auralic, Aurender, or Lumin streamer for redbook playback? Also, is the preamp section defeatable using the preamp version of the DAC? Can it be completely switched out of the circuit?

Any good DAC with good USB implementation will completely suppress the need of a fancy streamer like the Auralic, Aurender, Lumin and alike. Except of course if you like something in particular in the interface or LCD screen. If your DAC is only reading the data bits of the signal and completely discards the noise component, there is absolutely nothing a streamer can improve.

Hey,. I'm looking for advice... if I'm only planning to oversample via HQPlayer in SDM, via my roon bridge to a DAC, wouldn't I be waisting money on a R2R PCM topology in a DAC. Therefore, the next question would be, is there a good DAC that works in a true NOS with a dedicated, pure DSD topology? And what that would be: FPGA/R2R? Any plan to review the Gustard R26 and compare it to the Spring3?
@jamesgiebelАй бұрын
The DAC is credited in this video with “presenting the strings with such separation, and character, and resolution”. How can this be? Is there anything in its datasheet that can account for this characteristic? The DAC, at best, produces the original analog source material as recorded (+/- 1/2 LSB at 16 bits?) with a minimum of added stuff like artifacts, distortion, noise, etc. What am I missing? Is there a secret DSP function in the box? Please help me understand. Thanks.

Very nice presentation. It shows your passion and appreciation towards Gear Presented. A small doubt when presenting Holo May you said that there is no much difference between may l2 and may kte. And here you also tell that the spring 3 kte and May differences are subtle. Little confusing. Also does the spring kte also have the Separate DSD implementation . True OS/NOS implementation? Thanks in advance

Once I heard actual "true" NOS on the May, there was no using anything else for my ears. The added tactility and being-there-live that it allowed my music to convey, makes oversampled stuff sound decidedly false now; not bad. Just false.
@ShaleAudio3 жыл бұрын
The problem with the being-there-live aspect of NOS is that it can trigger some social anxiety for people, especially after COVID has reduced the amount of outside interaction people have had. Other than that it sounds like a great feature!

Yeah NOS is the only way to go on the May. Do you upsampling in ROON and or use a D2D converter like the KTE SU2. I upsample everything to 768k in ROON and that beats the upsampling internally in the Holo May.
@arrowzen74333 жыл бұрын
@@BrentLeVasseur why upsample? - what does it beat exactly? - how is it better?…
@BrentLeVasseur3 жыл бұрын
@@arrowzen7433 It’s subtle but upsampling from say 44.1 to 96khz makes it sound just a bit smoother. I don’t know if it is just placebo effect but I think I notice a slight difference. In Roon, I can have everything upsampled to 768k before sending it to my transport/DAC. My Mac Mini can do it easily, so why not? It doesn’t make it sound worse.

If you have the preamp option installed, is it possible to bypass it if you have a separate preamp later on? If you use Roon, e.g., via Raspberry Pi and USB, can you control the device volume control in Roon or do you need to use the remote? Is there any benefit in sound to use the separate preamp instead of the internal option? Regards

I am bit worried if r2r i will lose slam and bite. Is that so with the holo spring?

I dont understand Nos vs OS. The sample rate on the DAC never changed from 44.1 during your discussion. How are you affecting OS ? I have a Rose RS130 streamer thats lets me change sample rates and it is reflected on the DAC display. Is that what you mean? Also I have never ever found any DSD content. Can you us OS to do that or how does that work? I have some nice sounding gear but i have severe FOMO thinking Im leaving a ton on the table. My amp is a luxman integrated L507z. I know this is an old video. I have Roon as well. How do you use HDplayer with roon?

I hear the hype around the HOLO DACs and I agree to some extent: I own a MAY Lev2 and I find it amazing with complex, intricate compositions like classical or movie scores (in NOS) but... with music like progressive metal I find that the sheer punch is just not there. My "modest" Burson Conductor 3xr sounds much better for such genres, but can't compete in terms of natural sound.

Fantastic review, however Spring 3 KTE with Preamp costs $3,700, which is only $1,100 less than May L2, a second-hand May L2 in China only costs slightly higher than a brand new Spring 3 KTE with Preamp, so it all comes down to whether you want/have a separate preamp.

Unfortunately the Denafrips (and Musician) DACs do not actually do NOS. Their 'NOS' mode is actually linear interpolation oversampling. I've done a writeup on the topic at the end of this article: goldensound.audio/2021/10/07/denafrips-terminator-plus-with-gaia-measurements/ I like the denafrips DACs a lot and highly recommend them, but they aren't actually NOS

I’ve just been leaving it in the nos position. After watching your vids, you have me thinking of selling the Pontus for a Holo dac- great-lol Do you have a dedicated listening room or something other than desktop speakers for critical listening? I will try and learn about linear nos (Denafrips) and check out your link. Cheers from the States and btw my wife is a Scouser with zero interest in my audio journey.
