Renee grew up in Uzhorod, Czechoslovakia, an area annexed to Hungary in 1938. When Nazi Germany invaded Hungary in 1944, hundreds of thousands of Jews, including Renee’s family, were deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau. Renee was imprisoned at Auschwitz-Birkenau and different labor camps around Europe and was eventually liberated by Soviet troops in May 1945. She has been actively involved with the Museum and continues to speak all over the world about her experiences and about genocide.
