They were children in 1938. Now, 80 years later, they reflect on the Night of Broken Glass-the turning point in the Third Reich that would change everything.
This film was produced by the Leo Baeck Institute. It is part of The Atlantic Selects, an online showcase of short documentaries from independent creators, curated by The Atlantic.

Thank you for sharing these important and painful stories and memories. We need to listen well, so we can prevent any repetition of this. Too many scary similarities nowadays. As is the Jewish saying, for the victims of the Holocaust, may their memories be a blessing.

YoshliFan Don’t feel ashamed. Half of the Germans were actively against the Nazi regime. The rest was just scared. Many German concentration camps workers committed suicide. Hitler put the soldiers and civilians on drugs similar to cocaine. He also sent children to war after he ra; out of adults. The German folks were put in an impossible situation. There were some psychopaths but every nation has them.

@Smith McSmith I feel zero amount of sympathy for people offended by that! Anti maskers are detached from reality. Mask mandates for instance is nothing compared to holocaust. That gold star Jews wore was NOT meant to protect their health and safety! It was meant to allow Nazi's and non Jews to bullying, target, and knock innocent people to the ground! Meanwhile, Jews didn't have the luxury of complaining about "freedom of choice". If they dared, they'd be shot or rounded to on a train to a concentration camp immediately.

Ironically we are all a family, we are all Jewish... the heart is important. If Abraham was Jewish, how could anyone not be? Think about it. Don't be too strict... Kristallnacht is horrible. The biggest sin? Hate... kill sure, big sin. But it's only the body. But lies, hate, deceit? Those are big sins. And (Orthodox) Jews are not free of it. Don't mistake yourself for something you are not. Bye now. Shalom, Serge Lauper. I'm Jewish btw and Christian. My first and only rule: well... biggest rule: Love! Love your neighbour as yourself. Take care.

@@ussliberty4631 Whilst any loss of life is awful, this was a time of war for Israel *i am no apologist for every Israeli action i am mearly looking objectively at the incident* the USS LIBERTY was according to available literature a spy ship, Israel was at war for its existance, now whilst they apologised and paid millions of dollars in reperations, they also climed they thought it a disguised Egyptian ship, now personally i dont believe a word of that!! tis more likely the truth that they were worried that the Americans would be listening in to their communications as they made war manouvers. It is interesting however that the American government told the battle carrier (who answered the distress call from the LIBERTY) to desist and return and not go to the assistance of the USS LIBERTY, which does give pause to ponder were the Israelis right in that (not that it was an Egyptian ship) but it was others who were spying on their communications, *at a time of war* Just as in the first Gulf war, do we think for a minute there were no civilian and other casualtys when the allies, us brits and the americans launched their attacks!! *fog of war is a messy business*

The Jews are not "Chosen". We're all equal. Take the lesson from the Holocaust, no one is superior to anyone, no one is chosen or better or above, we're all the same, if you fail to do so, it's no different than what the Nazis did, "we are the chosen ones", they thought the same.
