Franz: A Professor’s Plea

Jewish professor Dr. Franz Goldberger-desperate to escape Nazi persecution in Vienna, Austria, in the late 1930s-wrote letters to strangers in the United States. He was searching for someone to serve as his financial sponsor for immigration.
One of Franz’s letters reached Helen Roseland, a postal worker in Eagle Grove, Iowa. Although she had never met Franz, she resolved to help him-tackling a mountain of paperwork and racing against time.

He was picked up and sent to Majdanek concentration camp. Nazis didn’t care whether you had a way to get out of the country or not. If you could provide free labor with minimal food and shelter to keep you alive for as long as you could work, they took you. Nazis were inhumane beasts.

In short, he never made it. The Nazis got him first.
