The mechanical versions of these are called nipkow disks, BBC used them for early tv but they were god aweful because there were poor standards for calibrating it so you'd be constantly changing it station to station. This is the pinnacle of tech rn... actually no, it's not. This is the ~$130 dollar version while I'm sure there's a lot better ones for more money, to the point we're approaching 30fps (monitor territory!)

depends ... for a single person experience .. you could in theory use a camera to get.position* viewing angle - and re-arange the data based on that ... giving it the effect of depth
@zobook
@zobook 5 жыл бұрын
@@akirahideo6904 if you do it sorta like a 3D print of the object it will look very 3D with no tracking needed, imagine a sphere made of big-to-small circles going from the back "fan" (the big circle) to the front "fan" (small circle), you get a 3D effect. Of course the effect works on a limited angle range, like Martin Gardner's 3D dragon illusion. I hope i make myself clear in English.

I remember these from many years ago. I've always wanted one. I know they are gimmicky, but it's a lot like a lighted painting. It's art and fun to look at, even though it might fall into the tacky category as fads change and it will inevitably break. I think it might be worth it, though I know too many engineers to buy one without their recommendations. That's where I saw these so long ago. Thank you for this trip down memory lane.

Very cool looking! Those POV displays have always fascinated me, even the simple “wiper” types that swing back and forth to display the date and time. There’s just something so magical about having this virtual image floating there. Have to wonder what the largest one ever made is like, I would assume eventually you’d hit limits in materials and stability with a really large, heavier one, and since you get a better image the faster it goes you would likely end up with tip speeds that were crazy.

This is the best quality footage of one of these I have seen vs real life! you can also get 4 bladed ones, where the LED pixels on blades 1 and 3 are slightly misaligned to pixels on blade 2 and 4. This way it fills in the gaps a bit better (a bit like how a dot matrix printer could do higher details by shifting the paper ever so slightly and going over it again!)

Yeah, I've had a passing fancy for these things for years now and they've certainly improved. Still to pricy for the novelty, especially at the effective resolution they have. Incidentally, the 4 blade versions not only have higher effective resolution and framerate, but they also support wifi and have 'app control', so presumably you can change the animations on the fly and support more features overall, like streaming a video. The page for one of them doesn't even mention .GIF in the supported list, though presumably it would support it. Based on one of the pictures in the description, it seems you might be able to link multiple quad-fans together to produce one larger image?

TechMoan! An idea! Change your bumper to this device displaying the video of your current device showing your logo! Lol!

The thing that makes the old intro interesting is the reel to reel machine is driving the effect. This device wouldn’t need the R2R machine, so it loses that DIY mad professor vibe. It’s more efficient, but less intriguing.

Techmoan he meant a video of the R2R machine playing the old persistence of vision technmoan logo on this new persistence of vision fan. It would be persistence of vision of persistence of vision of techmoan logos

A friend of mine did her art degree using a single bar, persistence of vision art pipe; very similar to what this blade is only hand-held. It seemed like a fun project at the time but this is even cooler. I kind of want one, now.

This would be extremely cool if you could feed LIVE video to it via composite, or HDMI. If they could get the resolution up to 1080 and accept LIVE HDMI I would pay whatever it cost to get one of these. How Frigging Awesome!!!!!!! This is one of the coolest things i've ever seen. Thank You Techmoan for showing me the light (LED)

I love my PSVR though I can't play some of the games,as even after a year of trying I get seriously nauseous. Driving games and first person shooters are the hardest for me. It really is an amazing experience,and has reinvigorated my passion for games. There are a lot of games that don't make me feel lousy though. Every one of my friends that have had a go on my PSVR are also blown away by the immersion,even my girl friend loved it,and she is not even a gamer. I would love to see @Techmoan do a video on it.
