I loved doing the first movement, and if you want to do it at a slower tempo, I suggest putting your playback speed at .8x for the F Major part, and .9x for the B Flat Minor part, respectively, as those are the tempos I did them at. But keep in mind that custom playback speeds will only work on computers. If you don’t have a computer, just imagine what those playback speeds would sound like.

Stupendous eclecticism of Holst. In the first movement he ennobles the band art. In the second it opens us to the scenarios of the mystery. In the third it ranges in vigorous theatricality. In the fourth it makes us happy as in a picnic with friends. Brilliant!

Our University Community band last played this in the Spring of 2017. But they've decided to have us play it again, for the Spring 2022 semester. What a great piece. Fun. And fun solo parts. (Clarinet, here.)

This piece takes me back to my high school days - it was one of the last pieces I ever played in HS band before my graduation. Even though I'm on the teaching side of things nowadays, and have played/conducted it more than once, I always feel that same sense of nostalgia.

Anvils are actually quite popular in band literature now. It’s a very distinctive sound. Brake drums are a popular tool for covering such parts.

We just got this piece for high school band and oh my lord. I got 1st trombone and I realized that I’m doubling the cornet part right before the euphonium solo. Trombone’s aren’t designed to go that high lmao. They should just put it on the treble cleff at that point.
@tristanperciful6609 Жыл бұрын
I'm playing the 1st trombone part for assessment and for me those notes come out in the perfect style already. Those notes may be high but you got it.
@Ronofthedead07Ай бұрын
I think trombones are great in that register and cut through an ensemble well. Outside of the US it’s not uncommon for trombonists to read treble clef parts in B flat. You also see tenor clef here and there.

the gentlemen in the audience getting jumpscared by the last note:
Interesting in the very first few measures that the low brass play the first 5 notes differently than the high winds...I like the brass play that fifth note, which is a quarter stacatto a bit longer than the four eigth notes that precede it while the woodwinds play the quarter the same as the eighth notes

This piece has some great euphonium parts. Question: Is the euphonium coming in a measure early at about 8:44 and holding the first note for two measures rather than the one note as the part it written?

The player is playing it as written. I believe you’re hearing the First French Horn part entering on their written C, which is a Concert F, and the same pitch (albeit a different octave) as the Euphonium’s first note. Give it a listen, see if you agree!
