THE PLANETS (Suite for Large Orchestra, Op. 32)
Arranged for Organ Solo by Jonathan Scott.
I. MARS (The Bringer of War)
II. VENUS (The Bringer of Peace)
III. MERCURY (The Winged Messenger)
IV. JUPITER (The Bringer of Jollity)
V. SATURN (The Bringer of Old Age)
VI. URANUS (The Magician)
VII. NEPTUNE (The Mystic)
The Planets was premiered during the last weeks of World War I at the Queen's Hall, London, and became the most famous piece of music about planets, space, and the cosmos. It also became a great influence for many famous orchestral film soundtracks. Each movement has wonderful qualities, from the driving energy of Mars, to the beautiful harmony of Venus, but probably the most famous movement is Jupiter, with its wonderful melody, known as the Hymn tune “I vow to thee my country” (Thaxted).
This is the first recording of the brand new Martin Scholz pipe organ of St Lambertus, Erkelenz, Germany. This impressive large 4 manual instrument has a wonderful sound, and even has tubular bells, which Jonathan will use to full effect in Saturn.
Tom has filmed many views and details of the beautiful church which, with its wonderful architectural lines and many abstract window/floor designs, really complements this celestial musical journey.
We hope that you enjoy this unique and epic sonic and visual experience.

The contrast within Saturn is just outstanding, from powerful and intimidating to soft and peaceful! This video proves that an organ is like a full orchestra, but in the form of a set of keyboards and pipes.

What a way to demonstrate this amazing new organ, from so many featured stops to its clarity and power. Massive challenge in some sections, like the impossibility of the missing snare drum in Mars, while Venus translates magically, featuring solo stops, as if originally for organ.

Bravo! Bravo!! What an absolutely stunning - repeat, stunning - achievement! Jonathan, you have become one of the very few and select organists to have played this suite. You must surely be the first to do it live in front of the world! And we had the privilege of watching it! Tom, what an outstanding display of camera- work, choreography, editing and effects. Many congratulations to you both!!

Powerful tour of the solar system by pipe organ. The "Mars" section brought back reminders of some science fiction movies of attacks from Mars. (One of them did use the orchestral version of "Mars"). From Chicago, U.S.A.

One could be excused for thinking the Planet Suite was actually composed for the organ in the first place, as opposed to orchestra, such is the standard of the adaptation/arrangement, the Martin Scholz Pipe Organ including stop selection and, of course, playing. Many thanks for sharing this excellent performance.

You have given us a magical moment, silver like that majestic and modern organ (beautiful). In addition, the place is modern, spectacular and stellar, ideal for this suite. The suite can be understood more or less but the great complexity and virtuosity of the interpretation can be appreciated without a doubt. Mercury is the musical part that has touched me the most. I think Jupiter is the best known. On Uranus it seems that you have done magic with your hands, I have never seen anything like it before, incredible. And Neptune I think he is the most mysterious and original because of the color of his sounds of outstanding mysticism. Tom has managed to create, with the natural sounds and lights of the beautiful and original stained glass windows, an environment full of color and light conducive to musical pieces. Thank you Tom for the quality of your creations!! Congratulations Jonathan for your Master's degree, for your excellence and unbeatable work!! Thank you both for your generosity. Every time you offer more and better. You are blessed!!💖💖😘😘

I don't have the ability to express my amazement at what I have just listened to and watched. Today was the Queen's funeral, a day of excellence tinged with sadness and pride. I then stumbled across this on my notifications, and what a perfect way to round up this historic day! The Scott Bros have shown us again what excellence truly means. The production and playing were truly sublime; at times I believed I was listening to an orchestra, not one man sat at an organ. The instrument itself is breathtaking, in my very humble opinion. Many organs have beautiful stops, but somehow don't come together. The way this instrument comes together in a glorious ensemble is a testament to the builders, designers and of course, Jonathan's superlative registration! Thank you Scott Bros Duo for this sublime end to a surreal day.

Your orchestral arrangements and performances are always astonishing, but this one... Totally transcendental! perfect stop selection, almost 300 perfect stop setups - sometimes undistinguished from the original orchestral version!!! It was deeply emotional!!! Congratulations! Also the filming from Tom, sometimes the light effects from the church lights or light from outside through windows, reminded me of planets and space under a telescope. Totally magical!!

What an experience! This is another orchestral piece that could just as well have been written for an organ like this, at least as transcribed by Jonathan Scott! I've listened 3 times already, and I don't miss the orchestra at all. Jonathan has captured the essence of each planet perfectly; menacing Mars, ethereal Venus, manic Mercury, jovial Jupiter, venerable Saturn, ponderous Uranus, and mysterious Neptune - all brilliantly realized! Of all the modern organs I've watched Jonathan play, this is my favorite so far, with its gorgeous sound! Applause to Tom for finding interesting images in such a (mostly) austere church, especially for the shadow image of Jonathan at the console, and the projected colors of the stained glass windows on the ceiling and walls! Thank you both for your superb artistry! 💗🎵🎹🪐📷

During chat, some of us were wondering why Holst never wrote a section for the Earth, so I researched this and found out. Holst had become interested in astrology, and omitted Earth because it has no astrological significance. When writing the music, though, he based his characterizations of the planets more on Roman mythology than astrology. I would give the source, but my comment isn't being accepted with the link included.
