The Master Organ Tamer does it again. There is a real danger transcribing such a popular piece can lead to accusations of desecration of the original, and a sense of resentment from the audience. Jonathan never has that issue, as once again he has made an orchestral masterpiece sound as though it was written for the organ. There is a chord progression in the 1st movement (E7, Am, F, C, Am E) that as a small boy left me breathless and sealed my love for classical music. Jonathan nailed it. Now take it to the Bridgwater!! Tom, it is worth noting that without your expertise behind the camera, microphone and editing suite these performances by Jonathan wouldn't have nearly the effect they do. It always saddens me these videos don't go viral, as they really should do.

I agree. I remember hearing this at like 3am when I was maybe 13, it blew me away.. and I probably woke up the rest of the family turning it up a bit too much. I had purchased a random recording of a different performance back then and thought I had gotten the piece wrong, it seemed so underwhelming. Not so for Johnathan's performance, this is absolutely fabulous!

My goodness. Jonathan, you have excelled yourself! The playing is, as you would expect, faultless. The transcription is truly brilliant. But the genius is in the registration. The tonal colours are luscious and dramatic. The changes are seamless and continuous. The Largo, in particular, is perfect. The whole performance is a musical masterpiece. Never overplayed, full of surprises and totally absorbing. A thoroughly enjoyable concert. Toms camera work, recording and editing is another work of art and brings the whole thing together perfectly. Thank you both so much. This will bring so much pleasure to so many.

You have no idea Jonathan - but this piece has always been one of my all time TOP favorite pieces of work. Didn't know for a long time what it was but hearing it every time I ever did - just sent me someplace else. And it still does. Your transcription of this work - monumental as it is in its own right for orchestra - has NOT been lost at all for a single instrument. This is amazingly rich, powerful and loses absolutely nothing in the translation at all. BRILLIANT is the word I always use for you and your brother's work and this being a favorite piece of mine gives me great joy to hear you do this as an organ solo work. Amazingly powerful, moving and incredible in my humble opinion. THANKS for sharing this. I love it as much now and more than I ever did hearing it done this way. Yeah, brilliant fits in my book. And I simply MUST add that your brother Tom's video work is impeccable, moving, fitting, brilliant as well. So evocative in his filming and editing that just simply fits the mood of the movements of the music while you're playing - AND giving us the glimpse of you playing an incredible arrangement/transcription of Dvorak's incredible original work.

I really missed something😭. What a great organ. The New World Symphony is something to dream about - wildly romantic. Whoever chose the concert program can now be very annoyed that they didn't choose the entire symphony. It's a shame for the live audience, good luck for the online community. Tom, thank you very much for the romantic impression from the cathedral.🤗🤗🤗🤗💖
@epincion4 ай бұрын
In principle having a concert recital of mixed works is better for a general audience, choosing to spend the entire time on one work can be polarising. I think this is why in the past Jonathan has done such single symphony works as an online concert - for example his solo organ transcription of St Saens organ concerto.
@nilagathe4 ай бұрын
@@epincion you are right, but if nobody chooses the full symphony, how do we get to hear it complete? 🤔 I hope, there will be someone who doesn't matter about polarising...😉❤️
@epincion4 ай бұрын
@@nilagathe in my opinion the way forwards now is that in this area and church Jonathan is now well known and so you book him again in 12-18 months and this time perhaps for two concerts, for example one concert with a mixed program of ‘popular’ organ and organ & piano duets and then the other requesting a full performance of one of his transcriptions of a great symphonic work. The concerts could be a day or two apart and even use different churches - I’m sure in the area of Billerbeck there are other great organs.

I had previously enjoyed the 2 movements you transcribed Jonathan but your transcription of the whole symphony is an amazing achievement!
