I first learned of this hymn in 1985 when someone asked me to sing it to audition for a choir. Problem was I did not know it cause I had not been in church much until that time. This is a longstanding favourite of mine. I grew up hearing it in church, and in my early teens (circa 14) I bought a 4 CD set because two of the discs were Handel's Messiah, but buying that on its own was a couple of dollars more. The other two discs were "Hymns Triumphant" and were classic hymns done with full, orchestra and choir, and when I actually listened to them, were equally as good as the Messiah, at least. This was one of the familiar hymns I knew well, and much to Mum's bemusement, I would sing the alto track to, instead of soprano (my usual singing register).
