Home Assistant shows me who is ringing at the Door

I aways wanted to have one simple, but very useful Home Automation, namely when someone rings at my front door I want to receive a picture on my phone or on my smart watch showing me #who #is actually #ringing. If you want to have the same useful feature I will show you what I did in Home Assistant with all of the details and the needed components so you can do that as well.

Wonderful. A better and cheaper way to set up door camera. By doing what you do we do not need to pay too much on those fancy door camera. You created the environment from scratch. Thanks for again on great tutorial.

Great video tried to do this long time ago but didn't know how to do the data stuff. Going to do this but for another scenario, I have a motion sensors in my shed, I have an automatin that says if were not home and there is motion then notify us, now we can add the picture as we had a camera in there anyway RTSP in HA dashboard

same for me, it was also even more confusing to me that the main directory is named "homeassistant"instead of config when viewing from file editor at least.

I think it is possible but your camera should support that. I think UniFi cameras can do that...

I wonder if it would be possible to combine your setup with Alexa (so that the picture is shown not only on the phone or the Apple Watch, but also on an Echo Show device)?

if you have good Home Assistant Alexa integration (best one for the moment is through Nabu Casa I think) it is possible

Great simple video. I have an android and when I click on the notification on my phone it merely loads the HA app rather than showing the image full screen, unsure why.

Did you add the url option in the notification part of the automation?

you need to use "clickAction: "instead or "URL:" to allow links to whatever you want

@@reviewassistant6891 I tried the `clickAction` and it attempts to load the image but just gives me a black screen on my mobile and eventually times out and asks if I want to use the external url for home assistant, which; after trying merely wants me to login to home assistant ... so I presume it is a permissions thing. But whilst trying out different things I did add the following: ` actions: - action: URI title: View Driveway Stream uri: entityId:camera.driveway_camera ` which sort of helps and let me stream the camera but would be good to open the snapshot for the time the motion happened.

what hardware do you use? because I use an argon one case, that is very hot, maybe because m,2 drive is hoot too... and the fan is very loud if I keep it on (very annoying). some tips hacks diy's to make it cooler?

I use a Pi 4 in the official case, using a USB 3.1 Memory stick no fan, no issues with heat

Issue with picture is it shows mine up huge when using the URL, anyway to solve this?

For now it is not to use URL :( probably we have to open an issue, but I don’t have much time for that right now

Great video, but in android you have to refresh the image by dragging screen from up to refresh it, otherwise will show last image from cache. So is better to make the picture name unique like snapshoot_29_iun_2020.jpg for example. snapshot_{{ as_timestamp(now()) | timestamp_custom('%Y%m%d_%H%M') }}.jpg an addon is to put some buttons under picture to unlock the door (with clickAction??) In this setup you can have all images in HA in case you missed some, BUT how can we clean them automatically when go over 20?!?! Any ideea?

Thanks for the comment and for the examples. I think you can clean the older JPG files by creating a simple retention bash script and to call this script for example daily with a Home Assistant automation.

Great video KP. Im using it with Unifi G4 doorbell. In the automation, under target, I had to use "choose device" The problem I ran into was in the notification section of the automation - the url locked up my iPhone 13 to that larger image. Nothing I could do to get the HA app back to the dashboard. I had to reset the HA app then re-log in , so I deleted url: /loca/front_xxx.jpg - works fine. Thank you for that walkthrough.

@@KPeyanski On my iPhone there is no way to dismiss the image and return to the app. It's not frozen, but there is no way to navigate away from the image.

I get the notification but no picture send. I check my www tmp folder and I see the snapshot there. but I get error Failed to load attachment Respose status code was unacceptable:404 also when I click the notificaion the link take me to my ha ip but cannot see the image

@ after I subscribed to Nabu casa everything work fine. I guess you need some sort of access to you home network
