Excellent, thanks. It may help other newbies , but it didn't work until I went into Tailscale :- machines, home assistant, Subnets and then approved the connection

When you were testing in safari, were you in a private browser window? This routes traffic via the apple proxy, so it wouldn’t route via tailscale. The other thing to watch out for is if you have a config installed for DOH (dns over https) via cloudflare or similar. This will cause resolution issues with tail scale.

Arhhhh good point... I forgot about Apple trying to "help" with these things. Although I didn't know about DOH (sorry Homer), but networking is very much a dark art, so I really appreciate advice from experts like yourself. Thanks.

Tailscale's android app is as useful as toilet water for nutritional value. ***EDIT*** I ran into a lot of frustrating failures because I had NO IDEA that the phone's VPN would interfere... I do wish that disclaimers such as this would precede tutorials, as it can be quite jarring to jump from video to video trying to find a fix. However, THIS VIDEO, was so well done, that it was the easiest to get all of the way through, and also be notified of this problem as well.

You do raise a good point, to often you have to reference 10 videos to get the outcome you want, and taking portions from many videos can be taxing. Setting the expectations and caveats up front should be a mandatory and one I'll try to enforce going forward. Good job I have all of you to keep me honest ;)

@@smart_home_australia If it were up to me... You'd be president after this coming election. But, the nay--sayers arguing bollocks such as constitutionality, although our current leader is likely napping under a blankie, with a teddy bear and the nuclear football.... yet hear you are, teaching people how to automate homes. Go figure. LOL

@@smart_home_australia LOL... well played. BTW... between the video you sent my to resolve my POE SLZB-06 Z2M problem and a Discord channel that I found today, I got my problem resolved. So thank you SO MUCH! It'd be AWESOME if YOU set up a Discord channel. You're HANDS DOWN the best "Home Assistant" content provider that either I or my ADHD have encountered. THANK YOU!

I have Home Assistant at home and at the cabin. I have a Nabu Casa account for my home HA, but I would like to avoid paying for a Nabu Casa account for the one at the cabin. I found a custom component in HACS called Remote Home-Assistant. Can I use Tailscale to connect them together? Maybe a video?
@smart_home_australia2 ай бұрын
The question is why two HA instances. Just have one to control both locations. The control the secondary with SMLight SLZB-06 as if it your HA was actually there. Check out my video on this adaptor and specially the remote VPN feature. It’s super well documented and easy to Implement.

With the SMLight SLZB-06 I would be able to communicate with my Zigbee devices at my cabin. But Wifi devices I wouldn't get access to.
@smart_home_australia2 ай бұрын
Got you, I thought you might just have Zigbee devices. Of course you could implement a wide-area mesh network (Primary node at home and satellite node at the cabin), but the latency would be a killer I suspect, and that assumes your cabin has WiFi. Either way a nice little project. :)

Quelle différence avec Wireguard ?
@smart_home_australia2 ай бұрын
It’s based on Wireguard but takes it to the next level with zero configuration. So you get the best of both worlds.

Has anyone tried this method using the Android companion app instead of a web browser for remote access?

Hi RB, not me, sorry.

Actually I can answer my own question and you'll be happy to hear that it works! Thanks for a great video.

It’s the best way of solving things. Sometimes I just need a sounding board and the answer just comes to me.
