You can attach a grinder to spiny thingy to grind stuff, or a magnet and coil to generate electricity O_o.

What did you use for the bearings/freewheel and spring for rope tension?

thanks for sharing! I have a question, if you don't mind: how is it, that there's no rattling sound of your freewheeling/rope pulling back? I am gathering intel to start building one, and would love to have that quieter, less intrusive option. how's the noise level, in general - do you reckon it is impossible to use at home, at night (downstairs) - without making enough racket to wake everyone up? thanks in advance for your comments/insights!

I wouldn't think the wheel itself makes much more noise than a bicycle, so maybe you could try putting a bike wherever you plan to put a rower, and see if the bike makes too much noise when you spin the pedals and then let it freewheel. If you still can't be sure, you could even tape some stiff paper fans blades into the spokes and see how much that increases the noise level. However, the resonance of any of the wood pieces would tend to amplify the vibrations that are passed from the mechanicals to the wood, so I'm guessing this rower will be louder than a bicycle. It might help to place the machine on a few of those interlocking rubber floor tiles they sell for kids' playrooms. They're not as expensive as the shop variety, but they're largely the same thing. As a desperate last resort, you could coat the larger pieces of wood with automotive sound-dampening foam in a spray can, or at least spray-on undercoating or bedliner material, and you might be able to cut up a plastic coffee can or a jug, to fashion an insulated cover around the freewheel itself. Hope it helps!

The wooden panels are a good size. How strong is the wind resistance?

I wish to make a rowing machine. I guess that I can build it, but may be is possible to make the seat/car with a piece of wood and wheels, but replace the large wheel with elastic bands. I believe that will be easier to store, to build, and probably cheaper. But I don't know if will work the same way. What do you think? Do you try something like I said? Is your system better than just bands and a little car?

pretty cool, the expensive part would be the shoes you screwed or glued to the wood. Just need some paint.

I have just two questions: One, is your body moving through the same range of motion as it would when rowing a scull? And two, is the spring tension light enough so that you have to do the work of sitting back up on your own, also the way you would if rowing a scull? I have rowed a scull, and hope to do so again, and I'd like to make one of these so that the seating position and range of motion would be as close to a scull as possible. Thanks! Great job!
