Hi Lisa,…You are GREAT! Only just found you and subscribed. Love your energy! You are such a fun, characterful, interesting, giving person.❤️ Thank you for sharing your knowledge.🙏 ❤ I really love Boho and Maximalist design. I find contemporary cold, dull and boring…..where’s the character and human in that? We are all unique and wonderful, I don’t believe in shutting ourselves away in lots of cupboards! We should proudly display who we are in all our uniqueness. Yay! 🤸♀️🤸♀️🤸♀️ 😊 ❤️❤️❤️

Lisa, this was sooo interesting. I did not realize that contemporary had its roots in Bauhaus, Arts and Crafts and even, Victorian. Vienna contributed much, as well. I admire Biedermeier. So beautiful and different. Furniture goes around like fashion, because it is fashion for our homes and a true form of art. The quality standards have certainly suffered as of late, but I am an optimist and think that so many aspects of life will improve and quality will return to all of it. Thanks for this very informative vlog. I love to learn. While contemporary is not my personal style, I certainly appreciate it and all the other style “moments” in history.

Sure! Transitional is so called because it’s a transition between Traditional and Contemporary. According to the quiz, you may lean towards the Contemporary side, but with a few Traditional nods here and there.

Lisa, thank you(!!!) for explaining the elements of contemporary style (i.e. clean lines, etc.) and for showing examples of the sub-categories of contemporary. I'm not sure that contemporary is fully my style, but I like elements of it. Additionally, there are things that I like in the rustic contemporary sub-category. This kind of explanation (elements & sub-categories) helps a lot because it enables me to begin putting words to what I like and/or prefer (which is a big step forward, for me)! Historically, I've taken the random Internet quiz to determine my design style & end up more confused - with all the names. (I'm guessing that they are simply a mash-up of various categories & sub-categories without the organizational context in which they belong and the common elements that link them together.). The result is that I can never "get a handle" on what I like (enough to communicate that to a designer). If asked, I'd say "I don't know what my style is!". Your explanation helped me a great deal. I can say I like this aspect of contemporary yet would prefer xyz when it comes to that aspect of contemporary. Additionally, when looking at the sub-categories, I'm most drawn to rustic contemporary but would prefer it had more wood because I like the warmth of wood. That is a much better description than "I don't know my style statement, and I'm so confused that I don't even know where to start, in trying to tell you what I like!" Thanks, Lisa, for helping me make progress in determining my interior design style and how to begin to communicate it! Yay!! 😊

I don't get too caught up in what style my place is, but I suppose it's transitional. For me, it's more about what works together without feeling cajumbled.

Gosh, those are some great ideas. Love seeing you talk about these beautiful interiors. Just seems like all the furniture I really like is astronomically expensive and way over my budget. It'd be nice to have an open credenza / media console in the MCM style that doesn't cost between $2,000 - $8,000. I can't swing with that set. Gotta stick with the punk rock DIY thrift store version. I'd like to store some records on the bottom, have a stereo receiver, cassette deck, etc in the middle and a turntable or two on top. Maybe I could add some angled legs to a Kallax shelf. My living room is fairly small (18' x 13' with 8' ceilings) and I probably have too much stuff in it. But my intuition tells me I need to change some stuff around because I'm a little embarrassed to have people over.

Lisa, how about a video about ceilings? I've been thinking of painting my ceiling with high-gloss paint, so it can bounce off light making the whole room brighter and more spacious. Does it work? I like the idea of light coming from above and matte stays on the ground. So why ppl don't use high-gloss more often on ceilings? What is your take on this?

Lisa Holt! I love your channel. I love interior decorating but I never find anything for the type of house I have and the way I want to decorate. I live in a timber 2-story ranch with a terra cotta roof and I am basing my interior decorating design on the house in the old tv show Bonanza, circa 1865. Every timber ranch I see is so modern. I can never find anything retro. Any tips? Alternatively, maybe address this kind of home in a future video. It's hard for me to find anything for decorating a timber ranch.

Love your channel, hate the Bauhaus gang. Tom Wolfe's truth-telling "From Bauhaus to Our House" is a must-read. Gropius' "worker's" building looks like a prison :(, depressing. To quote Mr. Wolfe: "O Beautiful, for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain, has there ever been another place on earth where so many people of wealth and power have paid for and put up with so much architecture they detested as within thy blessed borders?... Every child goes to school in a building that looks like a duplicating-machine replacement-parts wholesale distribution warehouse." and on and on

Werkhaus and Bauhaus ruined soft architecture in my opinion. People crave nature and organic lines and curves. No wonder most tourists hang around old places and beautiful outdoor scenery. Nobody wants to live in a factory-like environment that reminds us of office buildings, hospitals, warehouses, and storage units. Most people enjoy curved roads that meander like rivers, green environments that embrace organic soft materials like wood, brick, and clay, and homes that feel cozy, warm, light, and welcoming not cold and sterile. I welcome architecture rebellion that aims to resurrect traditional values in architecture such as arches, decorative details inside and out, tall ceilings and windows, warm colors and elements, gabled roofs with dormers, wood beams, balconies, and green gardens.

Contemporary means the present. Whatever design styles happening at the time are contemporary. The look of a caveman’s home during the Neolithic period was contemporary for them back then. It can only be contemporary if it’s how it is for that person today. In the future these styles won’t be called contemporary.

Contemporary really turns me off. It lacks warmth, comfort, and interest simply because it’s minimalism makes me think I’m in an office building. Totally overused in every office. Ok for those who don’t spend much time actually living in their homes! I hope this trend is moving on especially since with technology we are working and living at home in the future.

Art deco is so much better than werkstatte, which I absolutely loathe. Art deco definitely leans toward the geometric, but borrowed more elegance from Nouveau - which I do love, but it has too many curves in the way that werkstatte has too many lines. Craftsman has alot more purpose than the others, with every detail planned out & nothing is half-assed, which is what makes "modern" design since the 60s look like absolute trash in comparison.
