Keeping a person in prison cost more than $1000. So let's say you sentence the shoplifter 1 year in prison for stealing 1000 dollar of merchandise. Now the tax payers (you) will pay $65,000 (ave cost per prisoner). So in other words that same shoplifter not just stole $1000 from the retail store but stolen $65,000 from you and me. I would imagine that there's a simple way to bypass that. Otherwise, those manufacturers will have a lot of angry customers asking why their $500 saw stops working after 3 or 5 years. We're talking about construction workers who expect a tool to work the moment you pick it up. This is compared with an Apple phone where there's more money in enticing people to buy replacement phones than to repair their existing phone.

My biggest concern for this is the activation of tools. Sounds like if there’s an error in the software and decides to lock up what would the average consumer do, contact support and they’ll tell them your tool didn’t work because it’s not activated it might be stolen. How’s a consumer supposed to prove besides a receipt? That's my concern as well. It has to be able to be deactivated because otherwise products cannot be returned and resold, so what happens when these tools start to go bad and deactivate themselves? The locks probably don't have an active power supply so it's probably something comparable to an NFC tag meaning that it will just respond to the appropriate device meaning that anyone with that device could lock or unlock the tools so of course the bad guys will get them eventually. And can you imagine the harm if someone used a signal amplifier to remote disable all the power tools in a neighborhood or a work site? I know one thing for sure. I used to work at Home Depot, less than a year, I had other things to deal with that were more important than my at the time, optional job. One of the reasons I quit was because of the theft, it was too stressful to be working out in the lot and have a grown adult run full speed right past you and peel out of the parking lot, or to be getting carts and end up being right next to the getaway vehicle, I know they were probably doing stuff about it but I hated being around it. My coworker had someone steal an Amazon package off his porch. He posted the Ring footage and someone identified the woman pretty quickly. She was out on bond for being caught stealing multiple times from Home Depot when she stole his package along with a bunch of other people's mail. Then before her trial she was caught on camera stealing from Home Depot again. She wound up getting only a couple months in jail. It wasn't her first time being caught either, she just wound up with probation or suspended sentences. Thieves know they can walk in a store grab whatever they want, walk out and no one will stop them. And even if they get identified they'll do little to no time for it.
