Another thing that helps is actually holding the criminals responsible. There's very minimal to no repercussions for shoplifting. Especially if the total is under 1000 dollars.
@walden6272
@walden6272 3 жыл бұрын
Keeping a person in prison cost more than $1000. So let's say you sentence the shoplifter 1 year in prison for stealing 1000 dollar of merchandise. Now the tax payers (you) will pay $65,000 (ave cost per prisoner). So in other words that same shoplifter not just stole $1000 from the retail store but stolen $65,000 from you and me. You see a problem?
@RolopIsHere
@RolopIsHere 3 жыл бұрын
@@walden6272 But if the shoplifter does it twice a week, it will make more than $100k a year. And consumers will pay the bill since the store will increase prices to overcome losses. I rather help pay the $65k.

@@DrCrabnuts I agree that would happen, but I have a sneaking suspicion the minimum wage worker, who doesnt know or care, will miss alot of "activation codes" lol. The problem with this is that most thieves don't use their stuff; they sell it to unsuspecting people. Also, think about how that Bluetooth-disable feature can be used by companies to stop you from being able to repair your own stuff--they can just program it to auto-disable if you try to take it apart and require you to take it to them, like John Deere has been doing.

On top of that, what they’re saying is completely false, a Bluetooth device is not looking out to the internet to know if it was purchased “legally” before turning on. It would have to: 1. TURN ON in order to connect to something via Bluetooth 🤦🏾‍♂️ 2. Be connected to an app that would do such verification, which does not exist for any of the power tools purchased at Home Depot. 🤦🏾‍♂️ 🤣

Sounds like if there’s an error in the software and decides to lock up what would the average consumer do, contact support and they’ll tell them your tool didn’t work because it’s not activated it might be stolen. How’s a consumer supposed to prove besides a receipt? That's my concern as well. It has to be able to be deactivated because otherwise products cannot be returned and resold, so what happens when these tools start to go bad and deactivate themselves? The locks probably don't have an active power supply so it's probably something comparable to an NFC tag meaning that it will just respond to the appropriate device meaning that anyone with that device could lock or unlock the tools so of course the bad guys will get them eventually. And can you imagine the harm if someone used a signal amplifier to remote disable all the power tools in a neighborhood or a work site? I know one thing for sure. Next time I buy a power tool I'm going to make absolutely sure it doesn't have a Bluetooth lock. If it has the lock I'm not buying it.

The store I was at was privately owned and when the woman who owned it pleaded with them to stop because she’ll have to close down they all laughed and called her very racist things. I used to work in the front lobby of a large office building. On one end of our property was a bus stop. About two blocks in the other direction was a Walmart. I regularly saw people push Walmart carts to the bus stop and leave them there, either on the sidewalk or in the ditch. It disgusted me because I knew that some carts were probably later stolen, and the Walmart had to send someone to gather the others. Either way it cost money. It was also theft, and these people apparently had no problem with that. They probably would have a meltdown if wheel locks were implemented.

This also deters legitimate shoppers. No one going to buy the stuff that’s locked up. It’s to much trouble to get someone to unlock the rack and scan the item and everything else.

@@14isoldenough in Lowe's for example you can manufacture firearms from their parts in the store while waiting in line and have them finished and still be waiting 5-10 minutes to checkout. It's annoying when they overcharge me for something (like the glass cutting area, because their tool is woefully out of spec, but just so the workers don't get in trouble I'll pay for the huge sheet of glass so they aren't docked for the 3 failed attempts), but then if I have to wait 30+ minutes to pay for often about $10/20 then it's costing me more money in time than the product at full retail price! If I could just round up a $12 purchase to $20 slapped on the counter and go, that would be ideal, otherwise your only other option is walking out if you're actually in a rush. Note that they have a mobile app, if they let you pay for the items on the app, problem solved!

As someone that works on hand tools , it's literally as simple as removing the Bluetooth unite and splicing the power cables together,bypassing the need for Bluetooth activation completely
@ColdHawk
@ColdHawk 2 жыл бұрын
You know, I am sure they will make it so it’s not quite that simple, but your point still stands. It would be damn near impossible to integrate the Bluetooth circuits in a way that could not be bypassed - at least not in a cost effective way. What kills me is that with every tool I buy I will be covering a portion of the cost of adding that otherwise useless circuitry to power tools. Certainly thieves won’t be contributing to defraying the costs to the manufacturer or retailer….
