Love the finish. On the subject of hand made "errors". I can buy a perfectly machined guitar from a list of manufacturers. When I order a custom guitar I want to see the blood sweat and tears of its creator, that gives the guitar a unique personality, a story if you will. Love your work Ben.

Isn't the "probably not necessary" attention to detail the very thing that separates ok work from great work? And doesn't it reflect the pride one takes in one's work? I believe the answer to both questions is yes.

18:40: That's the way that "Big D" guitars headstock logos are made of. It actually works pretty nicely, especially when the powder is sealed off by another layer of superglue on top or the guitar finishing oil.

For future reference if you wanted to keep all of the powder then you could’ve added a small bucket/Tupperware container under the headstock while you were wiping it in for lack of a better term. I just had that thought and wanted to share. I am sure you didn’t care about the few grains of powder you lost to the floor

Golf club lettering paint wold be good on the headstock logo, it’s deep fill paint. I write this before I’ve watched the video of course so I don’t know what you did but for future reference 👍.

To matt the finish I usually use the indasa double sided soft sanding pads 180 or 220 grit which are a lot finer than regular sand paper plus they are perfect for round edges 👍
@michaelmenkes8085
@michaelmenkes8085 2 жыл бұрын
a fair warning on the use of pigment powders in superglue or epoxy: an inconsistent surface sanded down like that will collect dust you can't easily remove which will dull the result. Do a second coat of pigment and sealer and give it the full time in needs to set, plus a few hours. 24 hour epoxy will still be soft enough in 24 hours to get dust stuck in the surface. Add a day or two

Hi Ben! Thanks for your huge sharing. Just wanted to Share with you that , even if it’s on nowadays mood, perfect is not beautiful to me, it can sometimes become boring and tasteless (not sure for that word… poor english speaking, sorry) , otherwise little imperfections let better feel the natural material to me, closer to natural perfection, and also the human work made with it. Long life to crimson guitars!

Looks amazing already! The Guitar Finishing Oil works beautifully, I've used it on a few raw maple (necks), and swamp ash and mahogany bodies after staining them with waterbased dyes. I love the look and feel when cured, but putting on the first layer is so incredibly satisfying it's quite therapeutic 🤣👍🙏

I love the little rant in the beginning about hand made stuff having imperfections and modern humans expecting perfection. Im making my first instrument(bass) now, almost done too, but I did everything by hand so I know where all the imperfections are and it bothers me. My only goal for this bass was for it to be playable. I havent got there yet, but it looks 5x better than i expected so far. Today I'm leveling my frets and/or doing the electronics. Then after that I just gotta install the tuners and strings and plug it in and see what happens! P.S. Im making a passive MM Stingray looking thing

Hey Ben, love the bass. A). Can you use the high build finishing oil over stain? B) would the wipe on lacquer get to a high gloss with more coats? Keep up the amazing builds!
@Waggel86
@Waggel86 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not Ben but I hope that's okay. Pretty sure the oils can be used over stains, although it's been a while since I've used them though. High build over spirit stains. Haven't used this particular lacquer but have used other wipe on products. Prep the guitar. Apply the first two, very light, coats with 1500-2000 grit sandpaper. Then build coats with a rag. Maybe another coat with the sandpaper to even things out. More coats does give more gloss, but not (just) because of the thicker clear coat. That thicker coat gives you more space to polish and buff before going through the finish. That's were that mirror shine comes from.
@yerblues10
@yerblues10 2 жыл бұрын
@@Waggel86 thanks for the advice. You think only spirit based and not water based stains?
@CrimsonCustomGuitars
@CrimsonCustomGuitars 2 жыл бұрын
The spirit stain dries more quickly so do not blend as well as the water based stains but all work well together. We have even used water and spirit based stains blended together. When using the wipe on lacquer make sure each coat is completely dry before applying the next. kzbin.info/aero/PLp6z5fUMeeAYb4-gZOHOZau-Hmkjvmfkj DC
