There are alot of comments about the potential that a sprinkler system is going to malfunction/misfire and soak all your stuff. The schools I went to all had sprinkler systems and they never went off accidentally. Most office spaces Ive worked in had sprinklers and they never went off accidentally. Im sure if you think about it you will be the same. Its about as likely to happen as the house fire itself. At least with water you can dry it out. You can't really unburn something

One thing I have noticed reading through the comments is a bunch of people talking about well this is just a small fire put that out with a fire extinguisher. This video was for demonstration purposes to demonstrate if a larger fire occurred that you could not contain and you have to be realistic depending upon the size of the fire do you really want to risk getting smoke inhalation and other things which could potentially cause a casualty in the fire. Yes if it's a small fire that's just in the wastebasket you can probably put that out with a fire extinguisher but this was a demonstration they don't have an entire house to light on fire showing a properly installed system
@fluz_
@fluz_ 5 жыл бұрын
I would also NOT recommend attempting to put out a small fire by your self. Most of the time this happens the occupants fail and therefor have delayed the call to the emergency services. Another consideration is the type of fire, many people do not know that different fire extinguishers serve different roles. For example if a lamp is on fire in your home then PLEASE do not attempt to put it out with a fire extinguisher as this is a class E fire, requiring a extinguisher designed for such fires. Same goes to cooking fires. 5 Year Firefighter, Aus

SandPox they are hide away sprinkler system. So it’s flush to the ceiling with a flat cap. Nothing can never hit it to break. You can throw anything at it. Only way it will break is if your breaking your ceiling with a hammer. I do demo construction I demo around these heads all the time. The open exposed one are the ones that we actually accidentally break.

If you live in a city with only volunteer firefighters our response time will be way longer than 4 minutes usually it takes 3-5 minutes for the tones to drop and extra 5-10 minutes to get to the station and then start rolling out. Be safe and put smoke alarms and alarm systems where they can be heard and follow each instruction of where to put them carefully because it could mean your life if a fire was to happen in your house

These systems are wonderful, and can even help prevent death in both home owners and firefighters. The fire department takes a lot longer than this time shown. There is notification, prep, travel, traffic, assessment, utility hookups, and more to do. It’s just not this simple. Expect to Loose a good portion of your home in the time it takes for the fire department to get there. If you have lost less, you are one of the lucky ones.

I forgive you for not understanding the destructive capabilities of fire, but you are talking to someone who has experienced it first hand. We almost lost our house in a fire caused by someone throwing a lit cigarette out the window. 9 trucks, 3 dozers and a scout plane later we were spared.. Fire is NOTHING to take lightly... What if the fire spreads to your kitchen? Then to your neighbors house? Then to the woods behind their house? Next thing you know your entire neighborhood is gone and you complain about water damage?? I lost 15 acres of planted pines and a shop full of over 10grand worth of tools! To hell with water damage! I think you're missing the point, of course your things will be damaged regardless but when a fire starts, it doesn't stop and your entire house is going to get burned down or way more extensive damge than if the sprinkler just stopped it. Not to mention: what if you weren't home and came back to everything burned down? The sprinklers could have prevented your entire house being destroyed. What if you had a pet at risk? If you think about it, in the scenario that you were home and could have called the fire department you'd still have water damage anyway and it would be worse than the sprinklers. If this was a woosh then I apologize

My friend caught the entire back yard of his property on fire burning garbage last year. About 1 minute in and a frantic mess he called 911 and they brought the Calvary over to extinguish it. Lesson learned. Fire is scary. Probably a good idea that everyone has a couple fire extinguishers in their house.

firefighting is still using same technology as the Romans did to fight fires. We need to invest more to develop non water based fire suppression that doesn't cause expensive water damages that a lot of times cause same loss of property as the fire itself.

But Water is the most effective firefighting tool. There are special techiques to fight fires with minimum water damage.
@Engineer9736
@Engineer9736 6 жыл бұрын
Do you really think that science is stuck at only water solutions? Think again. All the non-water options are just 20 times more expensive and have other downsides. Automatically extinguishing with gas (is an existing fire extinguishing method) works by pushing all the oxygen out of a room. Which means you have totally zero chance of survival. Fire needs fuel, heat and oxygen: The water fire fighting methods suppresses the heat aspect. The gas fire fighting method supresses the oxygen aspect. The fuel firefighting method is buying uninflamable furniture which won’t look too good. That’s all the science that there is about the subject. Up to you to choose something. Conclussion, back to firefighting with water (or foam) again.

@@Engineer9736 your home doesn't need to be fire proof, leather isn't fire proof but it doesn't catch as easily or burn as well as petroleum derived synthetics like polyester and nylon, a hardwood structure takes longer to collapse from fire than a softwood structure, both because the fire spreads slower and also because the hardwood stays structurally sound for longer even when the fire is at the same intensity.... Dimensional lumber is superior to engineered plywood I beams for the same reasons..... Oversized dimensional lumber is superior to "properly" sized dimensional lumber for the same reasons.... None of these materials are fire proof by any stretch of the imagination but they slow the spread of fire and are less prone to structural collapse. Oh and those materials aren't ugly by most people's opinions but they are expensive!

It would take about three minutes to get to my house from the fire department and that being said there are pro's and con's. The pro is that you are safe and the police station it about a five minute drive so we are safe all the time at our house. The con is that sometimes it is hard to fall asleep because both departments are so close!
