When you stated that you WEREN'T going to cry, My first reaction was "How DARE you." Followed quickly by "Yeah, right!" I've heard this cover over 100 times and I cry every time. People think that it's strong NOT to cry... True strength is in not being ashamed to cry. Old man hugs for you.

NO shame in emotions, and showing them! I'm a 50% disabled retired vet. These type videos are hard to watch, but necessary. We must all remember the sacrifice that so many made. I lost an Uncle in Vietnam. My father was a Marine. Lost an eye. Nothing is easy about war, and especially losing a loved one. Tough guys, and tough women, don't cry, right? Nope! The best of the best cry or show emotion, bc they FEEL it! Kudos to you!

As a military person myself I've been in two wars. First I went to Iraq and three tours in Afghanistan. I've seen things no human should have to see. I've had many brothers die before my eyes and in my arms. I have what ppl call survivors guilt, I feel that it should have been me and not my brothers. This song gets me every time. This is actually a cover of a Vince Gill song he wrote about his brother but this is a song for everyone.

Living in the fact that my brothers died yet I lived sucks. There is no honor in that. We all said we would all die together, or live free. We didn't! Some of us lived, and that guilt is not what you think it is. it is the lack of honor when not dying to support and defend our brothers. Living past it is sometimes more cruel than dying. You cannot understand this, but we do. Sometimes living is worse than dying, because of our commitment and trust one to another. Love, brotherhood.

Thank you for showing emotion. I'm a 30-year veteran of the United States military and in my first assignment I volunteered to serve as a funeral detail officer as an additional duty leading a team to provide military honors to veterans throughout the state where I was assigned. I was the member of the detail who presented the flag folded from the coffin to the next of kin. I always retained my composure during the internment ceremony, but broke down in tears afterwards every time. In spite of what our popular media feeds us, I'm certain that we are much more united than divided, and make no mistake, the one thing our country does better than any other country in the world is honoring our fallen warriors, and appropriately so. I appreciate, honor, and grieve all of our fallen warriors, but I think I grieve more for those who can't appreciate the meaning of their sacrifices, as they must be soulless, and there's nothing sadder than that. God bless you.

Wow thank you for sharing your reaction to this great song of tribute! You couldn’t have said it better when you said “don’t live with survivors guilt, and don’t waste that survival. So many didn’t make it home, but those of us that did come home will never forget the sacrifice of our fallen Brothers and sisters in Arms. This version of this song from these brilliant singers is beyond beautiful and chills me to the core; as it’s hauntingly sad but beautiful at the same time. Maddy, thank you for caring about those who served but especially for honoring those that didn’t make it home. You have a beautiful soul and are a beautiful lady. It often tears at many of our hearts that did come home, as we have dealt with survivors guilt at times, I have really tried not to waste it as you said and that’s a very valid point. I love life, and as a musician, singer and a person of Faith, I appreciate the beauty of this version of “Go Rest High” and your beautiful soul for feeling exactly what I feel every time I hear it. They played this song (Vince Gill's original) in the room as my Dad was dying in May of this year. I held his hand until his last breath and for a while after. We laid him to rest on Memorial Day weekend with a military funeral. Being Memorial Day, there was a lot of people visiting the cemetery that day. My Dad would have been proud to see that everyone in the cemetery stood still and faced his grave as the bugler blew Taps. I certainly was. When they handed my Mom the policed brass from the 21 gun salute and the folded flag, my pride in my Dad almost overcome the grief of his passing. Almost. Anywho... this video just made me think about that again. I'm grateful. I just wanted you to know that.

Dearest Maddie, Thank you so very much for your honest reaction to this song. I am a 74 year old two tour Combat Veteran of the Vietnam War (1968-1970) who returned from the war changed. I was only 20 years old when I came home. Exposure to Agent Orange damaged my heart and I am 100% disabled from that damage along with severe PTSD. For many years, I had problems with survivor guilt and self blame. I lost so many of my brothers but learned to not blame myself. The most difficult part of returning home was how poorly we were treated by the citizens for whom we were fighting. So, that being said, thank you for your heartfelt reaction. You are an incredible young woman and I really enjoy your videos. BTW, the song was done originally by Vince Gill as a tribute to Keith Whitley when he died.

My father was in the Navy and now rests on the mountain top with his wife in Willamette National Cemetery, in Portland Oregon. While his life was not cut short like others he did bring home many photos of the horrors of WW ll. Not only the aftermath of the battles, but also the typhoon on Okinawa that did more damage to the Navy than Pearl Harbor. War and extreme weather looks pretty much the same. Some neighbors lost their son to Vietnam. Thank you for bringing this remembrance to us.

The song written by SINGER, MUSICIAN & COMPOSER - Vince Gill .... wrote it for his Brother in real life ..... and this interpretation by the Home Free arranger uses WW2 family loss of one brother for the story line. Phenomenal tune and heart wrenching lyrics to be sure. GBjj

I have heard this many times and had thought I was past tearing up, but watching how emotionally impactful this was for you caused me to tear up all over again. And lets not forget the ones who made it back but were forever changed physically and emotionally by their experience. We can never show enough gratitude for their service. I am a Home Fry and recently found your channel. Looking forward to following you as you go down the Home Free rabbit hole. They have many happy and uplifting songs as well. After this we all need one of those.

I was in ministry for 34 years. Great family was at our church for a year while he was in aviation school. Captain Aaron Blanchard was killed in Afghanistan in May, 2013. I flew to Washington state to conduct his funeral. As a former soldier of the thousands of funerals I've done, this was the hardest. This song always reminds of Aaron and brings me to tears.

Mandy, I’m a recent subscriber as I frequently watch Home Free reactions and have already watched a few of yours. I subscribed to you for the raw emotion you bring to the audience, it’s real and totally genuine. A combat veteran several times over myself, this song hits me in places I didn’t knew existed and still does to this day into military retirement. I’m always going to watch, share, and like your Home Free reactions as they come for sure. You make it personable and just real. Keep being you and only you. Keep reacting to Home Free. I promise you dear, you’ll NEVER be disappointed ❤

Thank you for your tears. My brother and I were in Vietnam at the same time. I was Army and he was a Marine. Both of us made it home. Some of us also carry sorrow for those we had to fight. Thirty years after I returned I started writing as a form of self-therapy. It helped me sort things out and face my demons. The day before this incident I received a letter from another brother which held a photo of him and his family. Thank you again for your tears. My Enemy Sleeps I’m sorry. Maybe I misread something here? The date written over your grave was seven days yet to come. They left you buried in a forest clearing. It had the look of hasty work. It seemed as if they did not care. "The date’s wrong! It’s an arms cache maybe,” I said, "Lieutenant, you want me to dig?” “We got some time. Yep, check it out.” Shallow grave with loose sand hiding your story. Brushing it away, I opened your last chapter... reluctantly Ah, the smell! I found your final place of sleep. The lieutenant asked, “Is it arms?” “No sir, its legs.” And there you were. There you were. Moving the dirt, I saw your clothes. The uniform I learned to hate. “Look for papers. Information.” I moved you. Going slowly through your pockets, I piled your life off to one side. Hand-written notes. A photograph. I gave these to the care of the lieutenant The notes with words I could not read. The photograph that said too much. Your loved ones, hopeful in faded black and white, would not welcome you home again. and dirt would hide my part in this. “Fill it in.” The lieutenant kicked at the dirt and some of it fell on your face. He walked away and left me there. ‘Though you slept and the darkness was upon you, the love I saw in the picture lit the darkness within me. “Not this way.” I told myself and did my best to keep dirt from your sleeping face. I covered you with what I had. Years have gone and the pain is losing its edge. Far away, my enemy sleeps, his face under my bandana. Yeah, I cry every time I play this video.

Thank you for your genuine reaction. The fact the you cried shows what kind of a person you truly are. I am an old combat vet and have seen more than I care to remember. When I was in combat I found out my younger brother was activated and sent to fight. I was a recruiter and put him in the service. Not knowing where he was or what his status was preyed on my mind terribly. I didnt know if he was even alive or not. After the fighting and my unit got to the departure area, I found out that he was 2 units down the line from me and was just fine. While watching this video, it make me think about my brother and I and either one of us going thru that. I do know that that if something did happen to my brother, I would Never be able to forgive myself. I would also like to sincerely thank you for supporting all of the veterans then and now like you do. It is so deeply appreciated. Thank you and keep making these wonderful reaction videos.
