They killed this Tim is so awesome. He can go so low and then so high. Rob, Austin and Chris Rupp do the harmonies flawlessly. Adam with his beat boxing is par excellence!

This performance was a turning point in their career. It was a deviation from their previous performances in it's creativity and daring. They left their comfort level pushed by the show's challenges. They began to understand more fully the extent of their abilities. Although they were successful in touring the country, performing at state fairs and corporate events, and being guest entertainers on cruises with a loyal fan base, they weren't accessing their full abilities, partly due to them limiting themselves by being grateful that they could earn a living by performing with friends that they enjoying being with . Home Free entered The Sing-Off never expecting to win. They merely expected to be on the show a few episodes as the token country group, get some national exposure briefly, and return to their professional touring. It wasn't until they did Ring of Fire that they realized that they could possibly win the contest. They them started to be more creative in their performances exposing more of their talent. They didn't totally understand the impact that The Sing-Off had on their career at first Pentatonix, as the finale guest performers, warned the acapella finalists to be prepared of a major change in their lives. Home Free, however, went to pickup their professional career where they had interrupted it However, the show had changed them unexpectedly from being s koe key group of basically unknown performers. They were thrust into a new higher level as more public figures. They were suddenly more well known with a rapidly expanding fan base.

I noticed (when I watched this show in 2013!) that Home Free was the only group who showcased their bass singers. Even Voiceplay, who competed the same season, did not put Geoff forward at all. I've been an HF fan ever since -- going on 10 years now. They really brought something new to a cappella and with great talents.

Geoff probably wasn't put forward because he hadn't really developed his low end yet. After the Sing-Off, Tim helped Geoff quite a bit and they became friends. I don't think any other group (that season) had anyone who could even come close to being a true basso profundo who could dream of hitting the notes Tim did! 👍

On Chris Rupp's channel, he did a series of "History of Home Free" videos and they talk about how they had been trying to get on Sing-Off for several years, but never got on. Then that year, the producers suggested they go as a "country" acapella band. None of them wanted to do it except Austin. Thank goodness he was able to talk the others into it!

Also not to be missed is their 'faceoff' with Fillharmonic (I think that's the name - a Filipino larger male ensemble), in which the two groups were supposed to be trying to knock each other out while performing a song together, but they ended up doing so well together that they were both advanced to the next round. They did "I'm all right", and it is both a hoot and an excellent performance.

Tim had literally been running from country music and Austin was all for it. I’m glad they made the choice they did! Their history is interesting and I’m glad that Chris got them to record their history.

Adam was the deciding vote for them to be a country acapella group to be on The Sing-Off. They were guaranteed a spot on The Sing-Off if they were labeled a country group. Tim and Rob are totally against it. Rob was a city guy from Minneapolis who felt no connection to country music. Tim had turned down a great position where his boss wanted him to be a solo country singer. Austin and Chris were for Home Free to be a country group. Austin enthusiastically wanted Home Free to be a country group with the argument that they could still perform other types of music. Chris didn't care if Home Free was labeled a country group. After so many years of struggling to establish the group , Chris just wanted to be on TV.

Love this version of "Ring Of Fire" from the "Sing Off". After this song you knew they had won the competition hands down. You can see how talented they were already back then. Hard to believe they have only gotten better. Tim is a true bass who sounds natural going low. It does not look like it takes any effort. He blew the judges away with his super low note. And Adam's beatboxing is stellar as always. Love how humble the guys are & supportive of each other. No divas in this group.

Tim actually started as a tenor in high school. When I met him, he said working on your tenor will help your bass a ton.

@@unluckydiablo9502 Tim while in school received Free private voice lessons courtesy of the state of Texas. Evidently Texas doesn't just support football, but also the arts too. Texas provides those lessons to students who win singing competitions. At least the state did when Tim was in school.

First time my jaw ever dropped watching a performance for TV? Hearing Adam’s funky beatboxing on this. My personal favorite performance of all time on the show was when they sing Tim’s original song I’ve seen backstage because it was the first time in the show I heard Chris Rupp my favorite tenor sing some lead vocals.

They weren't country but when they auditioned, 2 of their 3 songs were country because they were popular songs that they did in their shows. The show got really excited and suggested that they just go country. Which actually was a good idea. But that explains why they are able to cover any type of song if they want to. They were also asked to dress and look "country" which to the producers meant facial hair for some reason. So the guys all grew their beards, even Adam. Though I don't think Adam kept it very long after the show. I would think that perhaps the facial hair would interfere with his beatboxing since he has the mic so close to his face and his mic is set up different. The show tended to focus just on Tim and Austin due to the uniqueness of their voices. I don't think they ever singled out Chris. And with Rob and Adam, it was just a few times. I get it, the vocals of Tim and Austin would really catch the audiences ears but there were so many times, I just kept thinking "Did you hear the same song I just did? What about Rob? or Adam? or Chris?"
@carolburnett190

About that facial hair…Rob and Chris were the only ones able to really grow a beard. Even now, Tim’s beard is not very full. Poor Austin couldn’t grow any kind of facial hair and Adam’s beard doesn’t grow all over.

While personally not a huge fan of Johnny Cash, or the song, the guys did a stellar job. For many, this performance may have had them in the top spot to win but I enjoyed their upcoming songs more. Fortunately, you noted the 'prowess of each member' while the judges limit their acknowledgements to Tim and Austin...which has been mentioned in other commentary. (Unfortunate they couldn't have been a bit more even-handed in their nods.) Home Free is currently performing in Australia. While Austin and Amberly arrived well in advance, seems the others flew in shortly before their first appearance. With how they've handled their packed touring schedule in the past, now there's jet lag. But I'm sure the guys will still give 110%.

The story I heard was that they discovered there was a niche not present to agreed to assume the Country label...The founders being from Minnesota hardly had country overtones.

The Group was a MINNESOTA MANUFACTURED ENSEMBLE EARLY ON .... but in time people came and went ... When TIM, thereafter Austin, arrived it was three to two in Hinterlands (Still Minnesota, but fewer) then Chris took his personal agenda on the road and was replaced with Chance (Adam) .... that made it three to two FOR SOUTHERNERS ..... they became what was a tinge of that country feel in some ways INTO THEIR IDENTITY ....... not a bad idea as it turns out. Yeah love this. That low note by Tim was something. I love how Nick Lachey asks the judges, Have you ever heard anyone sing that low before?. Pretty interesting. I also noticed that Nick next to the boys looked small. He’s not real tall, 5’ 9” I think but next to the boys he looked little. Good reaction! Have a wonderful weekend!😍

I actually prefer this version than the one with Avi, simply because Tim just has a natural "country" voice that fits the song. Avi doesn't sound country at all.
