You are listening to a medley so this Is actually several songs. 1) The Wellerman - A whaling shanty 2) Drunken Sailor - I want to say this is a navy shanty about discipline. 3) Leave Her Johnny - A shanty about putting ashore or a foundered ship. 4) Cape Cod Girls - Though they modified the first verse "Cape Cod Ships ain't got no sails." Should be "Cape Cod girls ain't got no combs." 5) Santiana - This is a story shanty Shanties are normally working songs and normally you have one man the "Shantyman" who sings the verse, and then the task is done and everyone sings the chorus. So for example in "Cape Cod Girls," - The shantyman sings "Cape Cod ships ain't got no sails." Then everyone sings, "Heave away, Haul away" During that the men singing the chorus would do the combined task, pull the line to raise the sail on the Heave and the Haul and relax or fresh grip on the aways. So "Heave" - pull, "away," fresh grip on the line, "Haul," - pull, "away," fresh grip on the line. In some cases, the shantyman changes from verse to verse, and over time shanties would pick up extra verses. So it is possible in some arrangement of "Cape Cod Girls" there is a verse about "Cape Cod Ships ain't got no sails." Shanties like "Santiana" or "The Wellerman" were often sung by the crew who were larking (resting off duty) because unless the shantyman added a "To Me" or a call there was not a real place to coordinate effort though sometimes the beat would be used to set a pace for things like scrubbing the deck.

Adam is the only vocal percussionist I know that has introduced castanets vocally into an A Capella performance, and it was amazing to hear in this medley. For real creativity, check out the transitions they do in Meet In The Middle. Even while in quarantine at the time at their respective homes they still pull off a seamless effort in the handoffs to each performing member. Truly amazing.

As I understand it Chance is a big fan of sea shanties, which is a particular genre of folk music that sailors used to sing, and once that tik tok thing blew up he managed to convince the others to do a medley of a bunch of different ones.

Don Mclean picked them to back him up on his 50th anniversary self cover of American Pie. It is wonderful. I grew up listening to this song, since it came out when I was about 13 and they helped keep the original feel of the song, but did it in slightly new style of arrangement. Adam worked his butt of doing all the percussion.

Sea shanties were sung by sailors while hauling lines on sails and anchors and stuff. They needed to pull and hold in a synchronized way, so the song provided very good synchronization. Some of the songs weren't work songs, but were for entertainment when work was done. They have put together a few of the better shanties into this song. They obviously arrange very well. Home Free recorded this in pieces from their own homes and then mixed it together. I would love to hear them try Old Maui and Barrett's Privateers.

They're pretty much everywhere you look on the internet, other than Adam who is far too chaotic to be trusted on social media!! How good are these guys? The fun & energy in this is infectious. This was done during quarantine so none of the guys were even together. The editing of this was great & was done in the Tik Tok style. Love all the guys parts, with Tim's rumbling bass underlying it all. And Adam's beatboxing is phenomenal as always including castanets. Amazing how he increased the tempo from one song to another.

The songs are named in order(1)Wellerman, (2)Drunken Sailor, (3)Leave her, Johnny (4)bound for Australia, (5)Santiana. They are all classed as Sea Shanties and what they did here was create a Medley of all the songs. Each song has been done many times by many different bands. I like "Irish Drinking music" and these all pop up while I'm listening to my Darby Ogill station on Pandora.

Another banger reaction. And in that 3 hour road trip you could hear songs of all genre's as these guys are just phenomenal. I hope you were talking about reacting to American Pie featuring Don McLean....Don was 75 when they recorded that one. It's off the charts GREAT. That one & this one, the Sea Shanty Medly were short during quarantine, so the guys were in their own homes, all across the country (Chance in Los Angeles, Rob in Minneapolis area, Adam in Mankato, Minnesota & Tim in one Nashville suburb & Austin in another one in Nashville). Their editor needs a special grammy award for editing...also look up Meet in ther Middle, it's another incredible song & edit job...spectacular...the transitions are amazing...they had to record singing this, then record themselves lip synching & then the editor had to put it altogether

This vid was recorded during lockdown, each member has a recording booth at there homes, they recorded it and sent it to the mixer. They then recorded the vid at there homes and it was then mixed into this form with the music. This is a collection of songs from the early 1800’s that were often sung by sailor’s to help them keep time hosting the sails.

It's a Medley of lots of traditional Sea shanties. Like the sailor equivalent of the army's Marching songs. It was to keep everyone in time hauling on the ropes. A lot us learn these as kids in little school.

This was just one of their videos done during the quarantine, where they're all in their separate spaces. They're usually done in and around their own homes in three different states, although I can't tell if that's the case with this one. All these songs are traditional sea (not she) shanties. I used to hang out with a Celtic band in the 80s who regularly performed Drunken Sailor on stage. I doubt this medley video has anything to do with tictok. Take a look at HF's other videos done during the quarantine: Quarantine, Down To the Honkytonk, and Sunday Best are the ones that come to my mind first. There's also I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For by Peter Hollens feat. Home Free.

Could not get together so remotely did their parts and it was edited into this awesome video so they could put out some content during the epidemic without having to travel to the studio. If you really want to see how far they’ve come since 2013, maybe check out their performances. If you want your mind really blown, watch their latest video of theirs from 2 weeks ago. It’s a Dire Straits cover of “Brothers In Arms”! It is their best so far, so keep that in mind if/when you decide to react to it. There is a long rabbit hole of videos on their KZbin channel. There are so many to choose from. They have their silly/goofy/fun-loving side, but they have their profound social awareness side, too! If you want a good laugh and have a good time, check out “Hillbilly Bone”, or an older one “Butts Medley”. The Wellerman apparently got popular on Tik Toc so they did this in the style of cell phone recordings often posted there. Yes, you need to hear their cover of American Pie with Don McLean. It's every bit as good as you are probably imagining. If you're liking Home Free, you really should check out Voiceplay, another top acappella group. I'd suggest comparing their version of 'Hoist the Colors' to this.

Hahaha yeah I was like Sea Shanty? What? Who knew sea shanties were a thing? I didn’t but Chance (the one who sang first) loved them and brought this medley to them. At first they weren’t sure about doing it but they did and it became a huge hit for them. They did this during Covid so filmed themselves at home. What’s fun is that silly or serious the music doesn’t suffer. Tim was in the basement. Did you hear Adam doing castanets in the last song? He’s amazing. Try Helplessly Hoping, Folsom Prison Blues, In the Blood, What We Ain’t Got. So many good songs. Also Tim has collaborated with Peter Hollens (another amazing ‘a cappella’ singer) for Misty Mountains (from the movie the Hobbit). Tim’s low in that one too….amazing collaboration. Medley: the term for a mix of musical pieces spliced together. A lot of the joy of a medley is the interaction of the pieces (for better OR for worse--I've heard some funny, funny medleys of intentionally mismatched music...) in mood and tone, and the smoothness of the splicing. Medleys also let musicians show off a lot of melodies they really love but probably could not fit into one evening's performance without sacrificing other things they want to do.
