Chance was the bass in his previous group, Street Corner Symphony. His lows aren't quite as low as Tim, but they don't need to layer Tim if he's doing lead, because Chance can handle the bass. He has a 4+ octave range, which is quite impressive till you put him up against Tim's 5+ octave range. They trade off bass a lot more than most people realize -- Tim goes up and takes a tenor harmony part and Chance drops down, then Tim drops down and Chance goes to baritone. They do it all the time.

1st off, Tim wrote this song along with many others.2nd, Tim and Chance swap up bass leads during songs on many of their songs Chance joined the group in 2016, he was the bass voice and singer in the last group he was in ( Street Corner Synphony ) . 3rd , every one of these guys can do voice instrumentation, mimicing many types of instruments . 4th, do not under estimate Adam Rupp, not only is he a world class beat boxer, he can sing, belching out notes all most as low as Tim, and singing angelic high notes. I could go on and on about this group and their talents.

Thank goodness for your levelheadedness. All these ither commentors were making my head spin with their conspiracy theories of who was singing bass while Tim soloed. If we go back several HF reactions, I mentioned that the 2 - Tim and Chance had close to the same range... and the abilities to "mock" textures (sound near the same). This is Chance's bass ('cept where Tim drops on Chances' lead), the texture is just a tad different --- it does take some "listening" (and with some of that equipment ya got there!?!). As we get and move into some LIVE stuffs -- and if paying attention WHILE "LISTENING" (vs hearing)... we can have some resoluting discoveries!!!! Textures guys ... oh, and both go high (who best fits!) as high notes (solely) or in harmonizing ....... Reason for saying what they have is rare -- VERY RARE!!! = SOUND (the audio, the feel, the texture)!!! Whatcha lookin' for --- yeah, HF's got that!!! Be Safe

Tim is such a talented writer that he is definitely at the top for me. His lyrics are so beautiful, often with poetic sentences. It's great how Tim goes so high here and Chance does the bass and sings a verse so smoothly with his beautiful voice. I think they're all great and talented with their own specialties. The "guitar" sound is made by Darren Rust, the sixth member as they sometimes call him. That in combination with Adam's fabulous vocal percussion, it sounds like a full-fledged band. Two recommendations that will showcase Chance's bass voice. Street Corner Symphony was his previous a cappella group. I love their video for "Madness." Also, I don't know if you've done it yet but reactors new to Home Free are usually warned about not touching "Mayday" until they're very familiar with who's who and their vocal ranges. Awesome reaction, Jeremy and Jillian - thank you! In my opinion, it's entirely possible that the studio version has Tim layering the bass, and Chance would take the bass when they sing this live. However, there is a live version of "Down To the Honkytonk" where Chance takes the bass part when Tim does his solo and you really can't tell the difference between them - so it's also entirely possible that Chance is holding down the bass in the studio version too! Here is the link just so you can check it out and decide between yourselves who is doing the bass here!... kzbin.info/www/bejne/e53co3iiaa2dj7s As others have said, Darren Rust did the guitar sound.

Ninja is right, that was Chance when he was mouthing the bassline. Chance did most of it but Tim did the bassline when Chance sang lead. So you're both kind of right. I also thought at first that it was all Tim's bass because his voice is so distinguishable and I didn't pay attention to what Chance was doing the first time I watched it. But I heard that they worked together to match their tone. Which makes perfect sense to make it sound seamless. They have used tracks in the past with Tim's bass while he's singing lead but they've never played it off like Chance was the one doing it when he wasn't. There's no way that I could see them doing that. Plus, they know the Home Fries are way too smart for that. And they have always been very careful not to deceive their audience. Such as with the looper.
