A series of short videos showing the up-cycling of various items of scrap metal and plastic into a useable pressure generation device.
Contains sawing, milling, turning, drilling and tapping in the home machine shop.
For demonstration / teaching purposes, as part of my day job as a medical equipment technician, I need to be able to produce an oscillating (air) pressure (of say +/- 20mmHg) overlaid on a static pressure (of maybe 250mmHg).
The absolute pressures aren’t critical; however device creating them would need to run for up to an hour at a time, reliably producing the pulsatile pressure waveform whilst maintaining the underlying static pressure without any net gain or loss.
The oscillating pressure component is required to fool the medical equipment into running a simulated treatment.
The underlying static pressure needs to be adjustable at will to create under / over pressure alarm conditions that may be encountered (e.g. through blockage or leakage) during a typical therapy session whilst a patient is connected, but in the classroom environment where no patient is present.
There are many possible approaches to the design, but with no budget, time, materials, tools or any other resources allocated to the task, I elected to complete the device in my spare time in my home workshop using odds and ends I’d collected from the scrap bin.
Created with subtitles (click the CC box) for the hard of hearing, or when you need to keep the volume low.

You definitely know your stuff, very cool project. I hope to one day be able to machine my own parts, or anything I may need. I could make myself

Concept design and execution were spot on. Great use of junk drawer parts. Lathe & mill work very nice. Your background aids in this type of project.

I’m not a machinist, but a restorer of antique furniture. Though not equipped for this type of project, I was transfixed by the process and perfection shown. You have a new subscriber.

Well done bud. Quick tips from an old machinist try double sided tape for your plastic hold down. We had nice stuff by tesa but strong carpet tape may be ok. You don’t want a lot of sticky mess left mind! Also consider getting a ‘collet holder’ for turning both small diameters and also to prevent ‘overhang’ (and consequent vibration) that’s the distance from your jaws or collet to the point or machining. ER collet holders is what I mean not some expensive set-up. Try Amazon for say ER 11 collet holder that’s the small ones.

Silly sound effects during assembly work really well too.... I don't know if you're old enough to remember "Vision On" or "Take Heart" but it kinda reminds me of that.

Instead of using super glue directly on the acetal, use a good masking (painter's) tape on the acetal and on the base. Then use superglue between the two. Holds well, but is much easier to get off when you're done. For the masking tape, look for one that suitable to use on bricks or concrete blocks, as they tend to have more adhesion than the cheap white stuff.

Agreed. I learned about this trick on a luthiers channel - Crimson Custom Guitars. However, I tend to use double sided tape, which I steal from my crafter wife. Look for the tape with a red backing - it is superb stuff. I think the wife buys it from 'Create and Craft'. I think this is the same stuff from Amazon UK: www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07BV1LNV6?aaxitk=sbVj9myClwQKumupFX3UrA&pd_rd_i=B07BV1LNV6&pf_rd_p=b6d36b18-d68e-4083-ae5d-154f0b82c184&hsa_cr_id=1097444300202&sb-ci-n=productDescription&sb-ci-v=Super%20Sticky%2C%20Red%20Liner%20Double%20Sided%20Clear%20Tape%2C%20Pack%20of%203%20sizes%20-%203mm%2C%206mm%20%26%2012mm%20(5mtrs%20per%20roll)%20Mobile%20Phone%20Repair%2C%20Office%2C%20DIY%20Crafts%2C%20Scrapbooks%2C%20Document%20Repair&sb-ci-a=B07BV1LNV6

I really enjoy watching your videos. What brand is your mini lathe? I also was wondering if you would send me a few pics of how you have your shop setup and some of the lathe. I have a similar situation. My home shop is a single car garage, I currently have an ENCO mill drill. I also load my own match grade ammunition. I'm in the market for a mini lathe, hence the reason I'm asking about yours. You can send me an email if you'd like. I'd really appreciate it. I'd gladly share some pictures of my shop. ( I'll show you mine if you show me yours. Haha. )
