I wish I had half your welding skills. But I haven’t welded since my high school shop class back in the late 80’s. However I did get a free trailer from Offer Up that I refurbished and I used left over Trex boards from our deck for my bunks which will never rot and covered them with outdoor carpet that I got at Lowes for $8. Cleaned the hubs , installed bearing buddies, new winch stand, rollers, submersible led lights in the back, new safety chains, all new wiring and of course finished with matte black paint. Works beautifully for someone who never did this kind of work before.

@@SendItJonBoats I do indeed. Get my float pods today for my 12’ Grumman car topper to deal with the weight issue when sitting in rear seat, my fat (220) a**, plus the new 9.9 Tohatsu motor I got a week and a half ago. I plan on bolting and sealing with 5200 then attempting to braze around the outer edges to give it a nice (sort of) welded look. Got medium size instead of small from Backwater Inc. who recommended them even for my small boat to get 150lbs more of floatation. Will see what happens. Wish me luck.

Just a good tip from a certified welder here. Ya know, one of the guys that would chime here you gave a shout out to in the video... You are welding Galvanized. Highly hazardous. Make sure you have really good ventilation / extraction and grind away all that zinc coating before you weld. It can and will kill you.
@SendItJonBoats2 жыл бұрын
I did grind the galvanizing from the areas that I welded from the original trailer. Forgot my respirator but I made sure the galvanizing was grinded back away.

My trailer is in need of some repairs due to rust out. Thank for some of the ideas.... I have been wanting to add a step on the side for years and the step up front is new too. I usually hop in the the bed of the truck and then balance on the tongue. Having a wider spot on the tongue just makes sense. Also, I have a longer trailer too. It is nice being able to turn it all the way to jack knife without the front of the boat taking out my brake lights on the truck. It also makes backing it up a little easier too.

i made bunk slides out of a 1/4" plastic sheet for my new EZ loader trailer, Pretty sure it's UHMW but I'm not 100% it's the stuff that is as slippery as Teflon, and will never hurt the coating on the boat. plus i have to be careful launching as the boat hauls ass off the trailer now! Cost me about $40 total including the brass screws to mount them. you could even buy pre-made bunk slides off Etrailer instead of that foam. BTW just ordered my Send It Jon Boats sweatshirt, even got my military green. Made this Jarhead happy to see that lol

I looked at several bunk options, especially the plastic ones and the plastic covers. I wanted to go that route but I already had this cheapo foam and wanted to give it a try and see how it worked. Just a fair warning if you dip your boat in any kind of salt water check where your bunks sit on the bottom the salt will eat the aluminum as it dries I had this problem with carpet on my old aluminum boat trailer.

My boat has gator glide on the bottom, no worries about the aluminum reacting with salt water.

I’d build it exactly the same way I might consider using gator glide on the bunks but looks good to me

I would have loved to gator glide on the bunks, but I was out. The foam actually turned out really good. I will use it on future builds.

I appreciate that! I just like to give the haters something to complain about LOL. I could really care less what they think.

What the hell are you thinking? That C-channel is wrong, you used the wrong welder to do it, and your bunk boards are gonna be rotten by next week. And that tongue! What are trying to launch your boat without you truck having to leave the parking lot? And that finish. Rattle cans? Really? That thing shoulda been hot powder dip coated with an elastomeric polylaminar dipole surfactant membrane. As a minimum! And where in the world did you get 60/40 as a balance ratio? Everyone knows it should be 54.7% ahead of the axle and 45.3% behind. This is the only ratio that prevents harmonic standing wave frequency resonance from projecting perpendicularly from the fantabulator bearings of the tow vehicle. Hey, seriously though, it came out great. It looks as though all the ideas are working as planned. That's the real measure of success for a personal build; if it does what you wanted it to do. When I rebuild my trailer, I will probably be stealing a few of your ideas. I like that step platform on the tongue, and the step up pegs on the riser as well. Thanks for all the details. I appreciate you sharing your personal experience and knowledge on the various techniques and products. Your honest assessment of less than stellar products (I'm looking at you bunk foam), and how you dealt with the problems, is very helpful. What doesn't work is often more important than what does. I really enjoy your videos, I've learned a bunch since I found your channel. Nice production quality too.

Heck yeah man, I got my welder from Harbor Freight for less than 200 and it runs on a standard wall outlet. Love it so far.
