love the clutch design! it took me a few min to remember where I have seen a clutch set up like that. Go to the fair, the older rides like the ferris wheel and scrambler use clutch setups like that. Way cool.

the only reason the engine is bogging is because it's a sudden shift in energy. Think slip disks... It just needs to be more gradual, and if you figure it out, I think it'll work really well! And innovative.

it only rotates 'backwards' when there is zero load/weight on the shaft........on the kart on the ground it wont be like that........look up how differentials work......
@johnsalisbury3168 жыл бұрын
hi I like the differential idea but keep in mind that every time you shift gears while you are moving, you are changing the speed of the transmission input Shaft and everything that spins with it. With the differential, sprockets, and that heavy axle all connected to the input shaft, you are putting a great amount of stress on the gear selector device inside the transmission.

I haven't really looked in the comments yet, but I'm sure I'm the umpteenth person to say this. Wouldn't it have been easier/more practical/repeatable if instead of building the drum brake clutch you'd just have used a small brake disc and caliper off a bike instead? That way anything that tears up or wears out could be easily (and cheaply) bought to repair it. Idk, just a thought. Really cool setup you have there though, either way. Great idea!

This has been my favorite video so far, partially because of using the ring gear as a clutch. Absolutely outstanding idea, which made me want to take it a little farther. It seems plausible to me to remove the ring gear, and replace it with disc for a disc brake. I don't remember how the ring gear attaches to the planetary and spider gear setup. Another idea would be to find what kind of actual car clutch could be attached. Some machining would have to be done. Excellent video production. I especially like the fast hammering, and the music, also excellent. Getting the normal brake band to work, might still be the best idea, if it doesn't wear out to quickly. One more time everybody, This is a great idea, I don't care if somebody has thought of it before. A lot of people will surely be thinking of it now.

Hey, you can find your clutch setup inside the automatic transmission of a class in mini. It uses a series of diffs, each one adding onto the gear ratio. A system of brakes is used to select the gears.

I like the idea but I would be worried of how good the band brake would catch the sprocket. If anyone has ever gave the gas while holding the brake down knows that the engine always wins. Also happened on my 600cbr throttle jammed and the brake was no match so I crashed into a brick wall at 30 miles per hour. So if so we're I I would at least test the band brake with the gas pedal down and see which one wins. If you want to take off fast the acceleration is dependent on the braking power and the sprocket will be weaker since there is less surface area for the brake to grasp. Anyways this is all theory it's not absolute good luck.

Its a good idea but wouldn't it be extremely inefficient? Not in the sense of drag from belts, but in the weight of the entire system, I'm sure the gearbox weighs a crap ton already but wouldn't that be more of an incentive to keep it light? Brilliant concept though

Lawn mowers are slow due to internal gear reduction! Such a wast of a good frame. Differential will never work the way you want the pinion gears will never stand up! That's why people that do a lot of burnouts with one wheel wonders end up destroying the rear differential of their car or pickup and as a mechanic I have seen this a lot especially in my part of the country with people getting stuck in the winter and spinning one wheel trying to get unstuck!

@toxiclaboratories70708 жыл бұрын
the reason why i can see that you cant find anyone using a diff as a clutch it because one the brake band system is inefficient. the bands will burn up very fast with aggressive use also they dont work well as brakes much less clutches. second a clutch needs to have some sort of slip coefficient or the risk of breakage is greatly increased think of it like having a manual car and every time you take off you rev the car to the moon and dump the clutch and istead of it sliping it slams into gear and just goes. eventually and by eventually i mean very quickly things will begin to break. if you didnt rev it up it would just stall. so big hopes that it works but most likely if it does work it wont work for long.
@slaapkonijn588 жыл бұрын
if he finds a way to put the brake on the clutch slowly, it does effecively the same thing as a clutch right? i think it could probably work.
@toxiclaboratories70708 жыл бұрын
if he does that with brake bands they will slip and burn up faster than any belt i use belts on my pulling tractor and i haven't replaced the belt in two years still pulls the same but brake bands have a really soft material that burns up really fast
@slaapkonijn588 жыл бұрын
yes that is true, still interesting concept though.
@MrTheHillfolk8 жыл бұрын
It's a little like a band grabbing a drum in an automatic transmission
@toxiclaboratories70708 жыл бұрын
olny it has no fluid to keep it cool which will cause it to burn up really fast plus the materials in those two types of bands are drastically different the band in automatic transmissions is a natural substance similar to cardboard and super fine sand paper where ass brake bands have soft brake pad material with cheap glue holding it together. also auto tranny bands aren't stopping a direct driven force but an indirect force because auto transmissions are driven by fluid not the engine the auto transmissions also have sprag gears which act like a clutch and allows the transmission to free wheel while the bands are applied so it only has to stop the weight of the drum alowing it to shift the clutch persay of an automatic is the torque converter not the bands if auto transmissions just used the bands to clamp the drum without first disconnecting it would destroy the band in seconds. thats why an automatic and what he is doing are drastically different his idea is good but in practice wont work well there's other ways to stop the diff so it can drive the transmission but they would be extremely difficult to do one that would be fairly simple would be to use a brake rotor and a mechanical brake caliper with brake pads like that for an e brake because the clamping force of a caliper is much stronger and more efficient than that of a brake band
