It’s 100% worth it to get Firewalla Purple or Gold. I wouldn’t feel comfortable with my Firewalla hard drive sitting on a little SD card that someone can replace surreptitiously.

I just preordered the Firewalla Gold. I had the red firewalla, but like any SD card based computer I have had, mostly raspberry pi, the SD card is always the weak link and ends up getting corrupted at some point. Hopefully I should have better luck with the Gold version.

Im using NordVPN and I find it doesn't slow down my internet speed that much, but since Firewalla uses OpenVPN, I've heard its much much slower.

Uneasy about security devices that only accessible by an app and not directly with a computer. This is a weak link.

this thing basically doing a ARP poisoning, I tried it but my router instantly kicked this thing out of the network making it unusable. so if you have a pretty functional router that is doing its job this gadget may not work, else this works on other router that is outdated or just out right not secured. specially my security software is struggling to work with this software because its detecting arp poison attack. so this thing basically make my laptop lose internet connection. not until I disabled my firewall. tl;dr I basically return it because it was a heap of trash.

Thanks, was wondering how this thing could control anything without changing a default gateway or being inline with the Internet. Arp Poisoning.. no good.

Imagine that! I been out of the loop on this video since i made my comment a year ago. ARP poisoning is no good for my network anyways. Talk about a major security breech if someone at firewalla decided to start hacking into customers homes.

yes, and boo Firewalla. I was wondering how this thing can pull all that off with only one ethernet port. I'd believe it if it did a router on a stick thing with VLANs and trunking. of course that would mean a cooperative router and special router setup and definitely *not* plug-and-play. so maybe the gold for $500? 🤔 I don't think so. I'll be fine with my tomato router firmware. put another port on it Firewalla and I might stretch to the $200.

There is through your VPN provider. This device has only a VPN client, so you would still have to link it to your VPN service....which you are paying for monthly.

I can tell you right now that little blue box is a heap of garbage for my personal applications. 1 Ethernet cable on that blue box, all of your traffic would have to pass through that one little box, causing a network bottleneck after having 4 devices over the network. 2nd, that is a second firewall on your network which will increase your TTL, live hops, and latency. In otherwords, your webpages and accessing things over the web will be much slower. most firewalls are designed with minimum 2 Ethernet connections. 1 for your wan, 1 for your lan. When you branch out a firewall on your internal network the way this device handles your network traffic you will have nothing but headaches down the road. This device is built very cheaply, and if your a data streamer, or if your network uses excessive bandwith this is NOT for you.

Whats your network structure look like? how many devices you have on network? is your network home or small office? With the internet speeds isp's are putting out now, its likely better to just get the gold and forget all the other low tier devices FireWalla has. I dont believe the gold is bad, however my personal opinion about the gold and the images i see how they tie them into a network i dont much care for. My network has a 1Unit Dell R320 server running a linux os, Single 12 core Xeon cpu with 8gb of ram, 4 512gb sata drives in raid 5. (Overkill? Not really) so ill explain why. This server acts as a Transparent proxy, dns server, dhcp server, traffic manager, cache server, and LAGG manager for LACP. It has a quad port ethernet card configured in LACP running to a 24 port procurve switch from HP Giving me a 4Gb/s Trunk on that switch. Server also has 2 onboard lan ports, which receives traffic from ISP, Why do i need this? My home network has well over 30+ devices, 5 laptops 4 Game consoles 4 Smart TV's 3 Cell phones 2 Desktop PC's 3 more dell servers for web hosting, app hosting, etc. 8 NVR Cameras 1 Netgear router for the laptops, consoles, smar tv's, & phones. Thats not including guess that arrive at my house from out of state who need to use internet. However this R320 has been well made for keeping response times ultra low, fast load times, and very high uptime reliability for all of us on the same network at the same.

@Sith Avacyn i wouldnt mess with any of their models. Firewalla has a name in our industry and its perfect for ARP Poisoning a network. Small company recommended this box to a school to cut costs down from juniper peer to peer services. Ended up loosing an ISP service be because of the ARP Poisoning packets being sent across the peering network and affecting isp.
