Memphis, Tennessee is the largest city off of the Mississippi River. However, don't let that fool you as it's not the largest Metropolitan area off of the Mississippi. In this video I drive around Downtown Memphis, and I tell you more about it along the way.

Memphis was my home from 1997-2013, although I'm originally from rural VA. Looking at the video brought happy memories to my mind. Eating BBQ nachos while taking in a Redbirds game. Taking the Main Street trolley to a favorite bookstore or the former Peabody Place shopping mall to take in a movie. Blues City Cafe will always be my favorite go to restaurant. They made the best BBQ ribs, catfish, and fried chicken (except for Gus' World Famous Chicken on Front Street). G.E. Patterson was a world famous local pastor/bishop of a mega church ministry, which is found on the street named after him. He has a second building on Mississippi Blvd. Since his death, nephew Milton Hawkins now leads the church. I never got to play tourist much while living there. If I wasn't going to school, all I did was go to work and church. But I did go to the Civil Rights Museum, Peabody Hotel, Sun Studios and Graceland.

The tall yellow building has been empty since 1976. The tallest building is mostly empty but is used for its antennas. There is a Civil Rights Museum located in the Loraine Motel . . . . .

At 6:52 you missed a real history landmark. The Arcade Restaurant, that has been in several famous movies and is the oldest cafe in Memphis. Scenes from Mystery Train, Great Balls of Fire, The Client, The Firm, 21 Grams, Elizabethtown, Walk the Line, and My Blueberry Nights, just to name a few, have all been filmed in the restaurant.

Yes they are. Historic First Baptist Church Beale Street is one of the oldest churches in the city. Going back to pre Civil Rights era, when the neighborhood surrounding it was one of the few places where Black people were allowed to live due to segregation laws. Today Beale is little more than a tourist trap and the old community is gone and has been since MLK was shot at the Lorraine Motel. Bishop G.E. Patterson was pastor of a huge Pentecostal church on the street named after him.

Do you prefer Downtown Detroit or Downtown Memphis?
@ChrisHarden
@ChrisHarden 4 жыл бұрын
John Nguyen I would say Downtown Detroit but that’s not to say I didn’t like Downtown Memphis. I thought Memphis was really cool. Downtown Detroit is bigger though and has more entertainment options

They've cleaned downtown Detroit up pretty well in the last few years, Memphis is working its way towards that as well, I will say though, Memphis's downtown being smaller, it does have a small town vibe and people will remember you, I've had that happen at few times at various bars and restaurants.

To me, Downtown Memphis seemed very similar to the vibe that Nashville has, only smaller

It is for children with cancer primarily. It was financed in the beginning by Danny Thomas who was from Lebanon and had a sit-com show and was the father of Marlo Thomas who was "That Girl".

It isn’t that crowded as you think. It gets crowded when there’s an event. But the main reason it isn’t crowded like these other city even if there isn’t an event or something is because how dangerous the city is.

@@ChrisHarden Thanks. I don't live there anymore but most of my first 40 year was in the Memphis area. I still miss the place in spite of its faults. For about nine years I drove a service truck for the local Muzak franchise and learned the city streets very well. Spent a lot of time at the Arcade Restaurant having breakfast and also they were a client of the company I worked for. Moved to South Florida in late 1990 and I am still here.

I am a former Memphian. Your videos of my city lacked tremendously. I am truly disappointed. In your videos of other towns are far more informative and the tour is more thorough. It seemed like you didn't enjoy yourself at all and wanted to get out of there. You missed St. Jude Hospital and the Bass Pro Shop. Your tour of the hood was an absolute joke. Also, your joke about highway 51 South (Elvis Presley Blvd) missing a plasma center was done in poor taste. Please do better in the future.
