Ferguson is definitely misunderstood. I was living on the east coast when it happened and I noticed everybody assumed that Ferguson was like some burned out section of the Bronx and not a leafy suburb with green lawns. In general, coastal people misunderstand St. Louis and the Midwest in a lot of ways good and bad.

True! But also, declining/poor suburbs (which can be readily found in all regions of the US) are widely misunderstood in general, in that even if poor, many are actually somewhat bicolic in an almost rural sort of way. Some are indeed run down but not necessarily dense or especially urban in character, though of course high density urban character Poor suburbs do exist. Poor suburbs are also not all just black or Latino. Many are mostly white, of varying religious and ethnic composition, and some are quite diverse including many Southeast Asians and/or other groups. The source of such poverty varies as well, from urban poverty spread to an influx of rural low income domestic migrants to poor immigrants or refugees to downward mobility of existing residents due to localized job loss etc, and often some combination not these.

Ferguson looks like its fairly varied, the beginning of the video (with the horse ranches) looked very rural and bucolic but scenery changed quickly once in the older, downtown area.

The music is an almost perfect fit for this episode! It's very bittersweet and nostalgic sounding but in a subtle sort of way. Im actually somewhat surprised at how well kept much of Ferguson still is which is good to see!

Will you do a tour of Carlinville Illinois. They have 156 sears Roebuck homes that are still there. It’s an old Coal mining town. It was also the largest home order that Sears has ever had when they sold the kit homes. Super cool area and history. I’m from Peoria but live in Arkansas. My great grandma has a Sears house from the first year they were made in 1896 before they even had the official catalog display homes.

Why didn't you continue down Canfield? Thought you might go through Northwinds Apts, where I grew up. Fond memories there of mid-60s through 70s. Canfield was the bike route we took to go to Northland, the shopping center and cinema.

I know that Jennings was infamous for having a very large shopping mall fail, perhaps second only to (IL) Harvey's Dixie Square (1965-1979).

Not one big mall fail but two; River Roads and Northland, but Northland was an outdoor mall, and River Roads was small by modern standards. The fortunes of the area for sure changed bigtime from the 1960s to the 1990s when they shut down.

I was raised in "da hood" east of Jennings in Walnut Park, and I lived in Ferguson for a couple years too, so I drove all these roads you took on this journey. You drove passed the house where 1 of my great aunt & uncles lived, eons ago, twice while you were on Hord Ave. All this was a beautiful area back when I was small, but I wouldn't live there now.

At 8:27, you have Carson on the right, after the railroad bridge. In 1984, I was taking my driver’s test, and made a right turn on red from Carson onto N Florissant, instantly failing the test. D’oh!

I used to live on Ford Ave. in Ferguson and I very much liked living there. It was before the incident, but the combination of whites and black was great. We'd go to a local park and people of all stripes were there fishing, walking, etc. It was really nice. Great neighbors...

Yeah I've done a little growing up in all of these neighborhoods and all have faced serious evil in certain area's of those neighborhoods you mentioned, but outside of those area's is really nice which is the Majority as long as you don't have your kids going to them school districts in them area's you have nothing to worry about if your not in the low ends of those neighborhoods

One thing that you may not be aware of is how aggressive the Ferguson & St Louis County Police were immediately following the initial incident. It need not have turned into the mess that it became if not for violence from police. One example, I was at a protest a Ferguson P.D. the day following the death of Mike Brown, and it was not a large or violent crowd. The raging, snarling police dogs were almost more numerous than the protesters. It was very disturbing. If there is a lot of crime in the area around Canfield Green, it has to have something to do with the city of Ferguson allowing the construction of several large low income rental properties concentrated in one small section of the city. Really poor urban planning. One last thing about Ferguson that I noticed, in the few years before the Mike Brown incident, large areas of town had become somewhat depopulated by the foreclosure crisis. There were blocks where several houses on the same block had been empty for years. For some reason Ferguson appeared to be more impacted by foreclosure than most of the rest of the St. Louis metro area Thanks's for the video, and for not leaving out the Mike Brown story, and showing that Ferguson is staying strong!

Here in California, even many more prosperous mostly working class suburbs are often a lot more run down then Ferguson or even Jennings appear to be. But we also have our relitively well kept working class to poor suburbs as well.

First impressions, all the yards were trimmed and mowed. No trash filing front yards. No junked non running abandoned cars to be seen. I realize these are probably shot very early in the morning before the natives get restless. The difference between this and a warm Friday night drive around could be drastic but overall these towns look no different than most others I've seen. Definitely different than the "it's Halloween" every night appearance of Flint, Gary or Detroit.

Yep! I've notice this about many (though certainly not all) poor suburbs in the midwest. This seems to be much less often true in other regions of the country, though poor suburbs are common throughout the US. However, well kept but poor suburbs can to a certain extent be found in all regions of the country.

Michael McDonald, of rock and roll fame, lived in those apartments growing up in the sixties. There is a United States Department of Justice report on the shooting itself and then a separate report on systemic racism in the Ferguson Police Department, they are two separate reports.

Did he really rob the store? Or did he steal something and shove a store clerk on the way out? He was stopped by the police and he was unarmed. If he robbed the store, where was the gun? They never said he had a weapon. You can’t rob a store with your finger. And if he had a weapon, why would the store clerk walk up to him? Wouldn’t the clerk be scared he was going to be hurt?

Robbery is defined as using force or threat of force to deprive someone of their property. It was robbery, commonly called a strong-arm robbery, because no physical weapon was used. If someone pushes you down and takes a stick of gum out of your pocket, they've committed robbery.
