This was Corbett Lunsford's presentation on building science basics and infrared thermography at the Better Buildings: Better Business Conference in 2012. Through the lens of infrared thermal cameras, we explore the interaction and control of heat flow, airflow/pressure, moisture, and air quality. Presented to HERS Raters, BPI Professionals, builders and contractors.

Hey Corbett, I just found this set of videos & they are great!! I recently purchased the HOBO MX1101 & have been logging my attic for a while now. I'm learning more and more each day & loving it. I wanted to ask what thermal camera would you recommend to start out with? I really can't afford a $4k camera at this time.

Hey bud- thanks so much. Start with a $600 Flir C3 (or whatever the latest version is). It's wearable on a lanyard, very durable, easy to use, and when you upgrade you can hand it to your clients to wander around with.

Fabulous presentation and easy to understand for the layman! There was one spot where I'm not sure I got the explanation. It was when you talked about the Delta T around 22 minutes you gave two examples. 1st: If inside 60 and outside 90 (fair amount of heat flow into the house) 2nd: If inside is 80 and outside is 0 (ton of heat flow coming in)...wouldn't it be the opposite - heat flow would be going out (towards the colder temp)? I'm binge watching your channel...much appreciated! Cindi/homeowner

Delta T ..... here is an example. Your Air Condition system have a Return Air duct, returning the air(the big duct grill) & a supply air duct(the smaller duct grill) supplying the air in the rooms. Now if one was to go to the indoor unit(Air Handler or furnace unit), 1st locate the duct that's returning the indoor unit, then locate the supply duct that's sending air the different rooms from the unit. To obtain the Delta-T, is get the Temperture difference between the supply duct 75 degrees and return duct 55 degrees would be 20 degrees. Therefore the Delta T equals 20 degrees.

Im sure you have heard of Aerobarrier, could you use the blower door from that to use infrared being that its using positive pressure. Or do you only recommend negative pressure blower doors?

Aerobarrier is normally a rough construction application, before insulation I believe. But no, you can’t see anything with IR from inside during pressurization though.
